Actually both pronunciations of acorn are correct according to the American Heritage Dictionary of The English langauge. If that ain't the truth grits ain't groceries!

These are A'-kerns ! They don't grow on corn stalks!

It's acorns around here too. Pronounced like the ones on my feet! Those sure are nice manicured fingernails. That pink around the quick, a doctor mashed on my fingernail and told me if the pink came back real quick(fast) it meant I drink too much!! LOL Or was it the other way around? Anyway mine comes back fairly qiuck.

Let me 'spain that if I can.
a·corn [ áy kàwrn ] Old English [ æ' cern ]

Six of one and half dozen oth the other I think. I know one thing I don't know how our Native Americans made em edible! They are some bitter things! Wildlife don't seem to have a problem with it. I saw a recipe online one time and tried it but I'd still rarther have boiled peanuts-- if SOMEBODY~ would just bring em to me!

PS..

Someone brought me a gallon they bought over Montezuma way yesterday. Already boiled. Supposedly some of the best around. I was less than impressed. I'm still waiting till they start to dig here close to home. The lady chef of the house told me gettin crab-boil is no probem. Honestly she is the peanut lover. Once in a while is good enough for me -- on THAT at least!

That first one, ay kawrn, do you see how the r is almost hidden? Well that's how we say it, almost like ay kawn. It's almost taboo to roll an R around here. Actually, c o r n gets about as much of an R as you'll find. I'll agree corn gets more R than acorn. LOL Here's another, "Mop the floor" . My mother might say flo. But if she's in proper company she might say floah. But you got to be careful there too because you can easily turn floor into a two syllable word and really sound like an idiot. Senator Fritz Hollings was the best at it I ever saw when he'd say The great state of South Carolina, he'd throw his head back and say the GRAYEUT STAYUT ofsacalina. How he could turn one syllable words into two and even three syllables and then give the remaining seven syllables only enough space to fit on one I'll never know!

There was a game show where they give hints to the right answer. The answer was "buck" so Allen Alda said "doe" . The poor black guy answered "knob" . They laughed so much they had to go to commercials. I felt sorry for him 'cause it could have been me.

Double syllables are ok -- do-or, flo-or and so on but they don't work well with the OnStar phones! We have a few fo by fo's 'round here too. We have this wise arse ex Air Force Guy here who has gone so far as to paint "Fo X Fo" on the side of his 4WD pu! You know, where nornally you see Z28 or 4X4. You have to learn to speak the language of the crowd you are hangin with! When you are in Turkey -- you gobble! Be careful with some of them slang words around the girls too!

sweet potatoes

I have never grown sweet potatoes SP .I do know you are supposed to dig them before the frost hit them much , makes them rank or something. I wanted to try some this year. About July 1 I asked the guy at the feed and seed if he had any seed (I know you plant little pieces of vine). He said no, but they would be getting some in. I asked again yesterday and was told they'd be getting some in Spring and "that's not a fall crop". Am I dense or what? I bet I could have found some vines back in July if I had looked. What do ya'll know about SP?

That was like a tea for medicinal purposes? I think I have heard of that.

I did the leaves like you would collards just to see. Someone had mentioned it online. I think I'll stick with my collards!

Kale and mustard no. Collars and turnips mixed yes. You know, younger cooks cannot cook turnips. collads, squash or corn (in those big ol roaster pans) the way the old folks did. Not many left that can cook them right now-days.

Now ya'll are talking about some fine eating. One of my uncles is a green cooking dude. when he has some growing us nephews ask him to bring a big pot of them to our get togethers. and then you need a pan of homemade cornbread. Then you get you a helping of purple hull peas with a little chow chow on the side. Then you pour a big glass of sweet tea and go at it no meat needed.
