GIN

Mr. Jack, that Gin gyp of yours is a good looking hussy! All your hounds look good but I really like her looks. She reminds me of Glenda II that Mr. Frank Erwin had. She had a face like that. Clayton, Thanks for posting the pictures as I really enjoy looking at them. Hope you are recovering good and not going to stir crazy being laid up. I know its not any fun.
Mr. Jack it sounds like you have been stocking the freezer with venison. High as meat is in the grocery, every little bit helps and sure is some fine, healthy eating. Take Care and Good Hunting!!

Tramp

Took Tramp out alone for a while last night. went back here to the river behind my house. Have'nt hunted back there in a couple of months. turned Tramp West up an ole slough. He struck pretty quick and went East. I really didn't want him to go in that direction because there are camps and houses in there, but I didn't have any say so for the coon went in that direction. He went in there about 300 yrds and treed just across a drain from a house and although I know these people, I don't like to bother anyone. He was treed up a large oak. I shined for a few minutes, and he could have been there, but I didn't see anything so we moved on up the swamp. I turned Tram loose and he went in a couple hundred yrds and struck a real cold track and worked it another 200 yrds and treed I walked in to him and he was treed up another large oak. I shined for a while, but never could get him to look so we loaded up and went around on another road. and turned Tramp loose just west of an old deer plot. He left out and I kind of kept within about 300 yrds of him with the Garmin. He had traveled about 800 yrds and still hadn't struck. I got to a place where I couldn't go any farther on the 4-wheeler so I watched him on the Garmin as he traveled through a cut-over and into another swamp. He was in another 9oo yrds so I decided I had better make a move to get closer. I had to go back out on the highway and go around on another road and go back into the river. The first place I stopped and checked he was 900 yrds in. I went in all the way to the river and he was 400 yrds up an ole slough. I went in a little closer and stopped to listen for a minute and he treed about 300 yrds in across the slough. I got my rifle and crossed the slough and walked on in to him. He was treed up a large oak. I shined for a for a few minutes and the coon looked at me. I moved around to get closer and to get to where I could see the coon better. I lost the coon and I probably looked for an hour and could not find him again. I was fixing to leave and I decided t go back to where I saw the coon the first time and looked through the scope and found the coon laying flat on top of a big limb. I started to shoot the coon, but he was just laying there flat on that limb like he was telling me please don't shoot me. I don't want to die and I just didn't have the heart to shoot him, so I walked under the tree and petted ole Tramp up good and told him we would run him again, so we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

I really enjoyed those videos and the making of them. Until next time take care my friend.

Mr. Heard

I enjoyed talking with you also. We had a great hunt, one that I will always remember. Everything just seem to fall into place. The place we hunted. The friend I was hunting with. The dogs we were hunting, even the coons seem to cooperate with us. Take care Mr. Heard, call or come anytime------------Jack

Congratulations Chris And Sheba

Jeremy, Chris and I traveled back to Bay Springs last night to their UKC hunt. Jeremy and me didn't do any good. The dog that I beat last Sat. night beat me tonight, but I had no complaints on Gin she did a good job. Chris won the Nite Champion hunt with Sheba. Sheba only likes one more win to be a Dual Grand. We all drew good people and had a good time.

SHEBA

Congrats Mr. Jack, Chris and Sheba on that win and Jeremy with Shadow on the bench. I know you will be proud to see her finish out to Dual Grand. Her pups should be the real deal when they get old enough to go. Congrats again!

Tramp

Hunted Tramp alone tonight, first drop he went in about 150 yrds and struck an old feed track worked it in another 200 yrds and treed. I went around on another road and walked in to him. He was treed up a large pine and it was hard to see for the under brush and smaller trees around it.
I shined for a while, but never could get him to look. We loaded up and went around to another part of the swamp. Tramp went in about 450 yrds and struck a pretty good track, moved it in another 200 yrds and treed. I drove around and got within about 75 yrds of him and walked on in to him. He was treed out in the middle of a slough in a den tree. I shined for a few minutes, but I knew that this one had made it home. We walked back to the 4-wheeler and loaded up and went around closer to the river. I turned Tramp off a small woods road. He went in about 300 yrds and struck a real cold track and worked it about 750 yrds and treed in next to the river. He was treed up a smaller dead tree leaning into a large oak with a lot of vines everywhere. I looked for a while, but if he was there I couldn't find him, but I couldn't get to where I could look at the other side of the tree because of a deep ditch. We walked back to the 4-wheeler. It was getting late so we called it a night.

Tramp

Hunted Tramp alone for a while tonight, turned him into a big woods up the road aways and he went in about 300 yrds and struck a pretty good track. Moved it in another 400 yrds and treed. I rode the 4-wheeler in to about 200 yrds of him and got my rifle and walked on in to him He was treed up a medium sized oak that didn't have a leaf on it. I looked for several minutes and could not believe that he had missed this coon, don't get me wrong I know he has missed a few before, but he don't miss many and with my eye sight he probably don't miss nearly as many as I just cant find. He had done a great job tracking and had those flat woods ringing. I hadn't used my squaller, brcause I didn't think there was any use, but to make tramp think I really believed the coon was there, I got my squaller out and blowed on it and when I did the coon looked at me from some small limbs up near the top. I had already thought that I had looked all over the tree using the rifle scope, but after he looked at me and I knew where he was at I put the scope on him and he looked like a little bear sitting up there. Steve he was a lot bigger than the coon that we got over at your house the other night and was probably sitting more in the open. I couldn't believe I hadn't already seen this coon. I had to go over and pet and appoligize to ole Tramp for doubting him. I shot the coon out to him. I had hit the coon several times and all he did was growl and started down the tree. I shot him again as he was coming down the tree and out he came. He hit the ground as if nothing had ever happened to him. Tramp dove into him and the fight was on. The coon would get ahold of Tramp and Tramp would lock into him. The coon would flex his big shoulder muscles and knock Tramp loose and try to run and Tramp would lock into him again. I knew that although Tramp was doing everything he could and kept trying to get a throat hold on the coon, but the coon was just too big and mean. I knew that if Tramp was going to win this fight I was going to have to help, so at the first opportunity I got I shot the coon again. All he did was turn and look at me and the fight was on again. I had to be careful not to shoot Tramp, but the next opportunity I got I shot the coon again. This time it hit home and he layed down. The coon was a true warrior and one of the biggest coons I can ever remember taking in this part of the country. I,m sure that there will be many more, but I,m also sure that Tramp won't soon forget this one and neither will I.

Gin

After all mine and Tramps excitement tonight, I brought him home and put him up and feed him. Loaded Gin up and headed back to another part of the swamp. Turned her off an ole woods road and she went in about 200 yrds and struck a pretty good track and thru the swamp she went. She made a big circle to the north east of where I was and I knew she was headed to some rough country with a lot of water. She swung east and hit an ole creek bed and turned north into what we call Dry Creek. Thru the summer this creek bed is dry, but now after all the rain we've had there is quite a bit of water in there. The creek has got some high banks in places. Gin was pushing the coon pretty good up the creek as it made its way thru the swamp. I had followed her as far as I could on the 4-wheeler and she was still about 800 yrds in when she came treed. I got my rifle and made my way to her. I must have crossed that creek 5 or 6 times while going to her. She was treed in a den tree, a big Cyprus that had grown up right out in the middle of the creek. I shined for a few minutes, but I was sure he had made it home and I knew that we would run him again. I went in and petted Gin good and we made our way back down the creek to the four wheeler and called it a night.

Tramp

Turned Tramp into a strip of planted pines about 15 years old. I knew that there was a pretty good oak flat about 200 yrds in. He struck about 500 yrds in and it was a cold track. He got in about 700 yrds and I decided I had better go around on another road. I got around on another woods road and came to a gate and it was locked and I didnt have a key to it as it was leading into someone elses property and he was a little over 600 yrds from there, and by now he had the coon moving pretty good and was steady moving East. I went back out and around on another Road to another locked gate, but this one I had the key for. I checked the Garmin and listened ther at the gate and he was treed a little over 700 yrds in. I went on around the road that I was on and it got me to within 175 yrds of where he was treed. I got my rifle and started to him. Ole Tramp was sure making that holler ring. I crossed thru a pretty little oak flat with a branch running thru it. He was tree at the edge of a pine thicket up a medium sized pine that had a lot of vines in it. I found a place where I could see pretty good and hit my squaller and he looked at me from about 10 ft. from the top in a bunch of vines. I knocked him out to Tramp and this was another big boar coon. He wasnt quite as big as the one last night, but he was hugh by southern standards. I petted ole Tramp up some and got the coon and we headed to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.

RUTTING COON

Sounds like Ole Bo and I are missing all the fun you and Tramp are having running those rutting boars. Going to be some good races and big coon treed over the next month or so as seems like rut is getting into high gear. Even though those leaves are off most trees and some big coons are up those trees they can still be hard to find. That second one we treed over here the other night took us both a while to find him and he was right out in the open and I'm like you Mr. Jack, after I spot them I can't believe I overlooked them in the first place. They can sure flatten out and blend in. Its 3:15am and I'm about to walk out the door to work but wish I was headed to cut Bo loose. Need to check my powerball ticket, maybe I won and can walk out there and cut him loose! lol! Dreaming. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Sheba and Goll V

This was my 1st time out since I broke my feet but I really needed to get out of the house. I crawled up on the Kubota with Chris and 3 of our boys. After we had a good talking to about what would happened if we damaged the feet any worse by my wife we pulled out. We cut the dogs on the upper end of an old dummy line and Sheba struck 1st with Doll right behind her. They were about 160 yards and took a few min to get it going good. They were opening some but just enough to let us know they had it going. They got in about 500 yards and out of the bad water and really pushed him another 150 yards. They treed in about 650 yards and he didn't make it home. Chris and the boys walked in to a medium sized oak and he was sitting in the 1st fork. Chris seen him right away but allowed the boys about 10 min to find him on their own. I sit on the Kubota and just listened to some fine dogs although I'm not sure if the kids were hollering louder than the dogs. He allowed the kids each some time to practice their squalling and left the coon for another night.
2nd Drop
We cut the dogs on the lower end of the dummy line and they went in and struck a good track about 230 yards. They were pushing this track about 530 yards and treed right on Greens Creek. We got within about 75 yards and they walked in to an oak that fell across the creek against a big bluff on the other side. He looked for a few min but was sure this coon hit the hedge bushes on the other side of the creek. Again it was nice sitting on the Buggy and listening to the dogs. This happens some with so many trees laying across the creek.
3rd Drop
We cut the dogs south down Greens Creek close to a bridge. This coon must have been feeding in an old water hole that's close by because they didn't go 75 yards and both dogs started screaming. They started pushing this coon down the creek rapidly and opening every breath. They pushed him about 370 yards and Sheba give a solid locate with Doll starting to chop almost the same time. We got within 125 yards and Chris went through the same procedure with the kids. All the squalling they were doing I don't know how that coon stayed in the tree but those boys were having a time. I was as well just sitting on the buggy but I'm not sure about Chris keeping two dogs and 3 boy in check. By this time I needed to get my feet up, kids had school and the dogs had done a great job so we came home.

Thanks guys

Keep the hunt stories coming- look forward to reading them everyday. We have been hitting the woods some with the mild winter here in Iowa & the rut going on, but still good to read about your hunts.

Mr. Jack & crew- congrats on the win.

Steve- sorry to read about your loss. Take care, Ron.

Raining, cain't hunt

Steve, we sure are getting a lot of rain tonight. I just been sitting around here tonight listening to the rain, wishing some coonhunter would call and talk dogs for a while, but you ever notice no one ever calls on a night like this. I just been reading Bloodlines, old Bluebooks, and thinking about breeding dogs, what crosses may or may not work, but as you say we can dream, and by the way if your dream comes true and you win all those millions dont forget about your ole buddy over here across the river, lol.

Clayton, sounds like you and Chris and the boys had a great hunt.
Glad you were able to get out and listen and enjoy it, just be careful we dont need any setbacks.

Ron and Bill, thanks for the congrats and glad ya'll enjoy the thread. That comming from coon like you two means a lot to me. I always have enjoyed writting and this gives me an outlet to do so. Thanks again fellows------Jack

TALKING HUNTING

Mr. Jack I was thinking the same thing yesterday, it would be a nice day with all the rain to just sit around with you and the guys and talk hunting and hounds, throw some wood on the fire and drink some hot coffee. If I didn't have so much going on yesterday I would have called you. The next bad day we have keep your phone handy. I will bring some good sausage if you put the coffee on.
Clayton it sure is good to hear you got out of the house and got to listen to yaws hounds tree a couple. Sounds like Chris had his hands full but I know him and the kids enjoyed every second as you did. Be careful getting around as you sure don't want to reinjure it as its trying to heal.
Ron and Bill hope all is good up yaws way and that yaw are able to get in some Good Hunting. Take Care!

Tramp

Took Tramp out for a short run tonight, although it was pretty cool, drizzling rain and the wind blowing. The coons seemed to be on the move. 1st drop he went in about 100 yrds and just treed. I walked in to him and he was treed up a medium sized water oak. I shined the tree for a minute and found him sitting right in the top. We left him to run again and loaded up and went to the river. There is sure a lot of water in the woods tonight and the steady drizzle wasn't helping any. I turned Tramp down a branch that runs through the swamp. He went in a ways and turned west toward the river and struck a pretty good track. he made a circle up close to where a friend of mine has a deer plot planted. Pretty rough stuff in there around that deer plot. Came out of there and headed back toward the branch. he got in there a ways and located one time and kept moving. I told myself its a good thing we were not in a hunt, because I would have probably been on the card. He ran the coon back out of there and out into about a 7 year cutover and treed right out in the middle of it. I walked in to him. The cutover wasn't to bad after you got out into it. He was treed up a medium sized Post Oak that the wood cutters must have left standing. I made a circle around the tree shinning and found him about 3/4 of the way up hugged to the tree. We also left him to run again. We walked back to the 4-wheeler. The rain was getting harder so we decided to call it a night. Steve my phone is always handy. The older I get the more I rather just talk about coonhunting and the coffee and sausage sounds good to me.

Tramp

Took Tramp out for another short run tonight. He went in about 100 yrds opened a couple of times and treed. walked in to him and he was treed up a large water oak. I shined for a few minutes and found the coon sitting up near the top. We left him to run again. Petted ole Tramp a little and headed for the house.

Doll V and Gin

After making a round with Tramp I came back to the house, Put Tramp up and got Doll V and Gin. They hadn't been hunted in a few nights and they were ready to go. I took them down toward the river and turned them down the same branch that I turned Tramp down last night, but they didnt have the luck that he had last night and strike pretty quick. They went in about 700 yrds and struck on the back side of a 20 acre cutover. They struck a good track in next to the river. Drove the track for about 200 yrds and Doll loaded up treed with Gin about two barks behind her. Those little females were making the woods ring. I drove to within about 150 yrds of them and went to get my rifle, for it had been several nights since either one of them had had one shot out to them. I looked in the scabbard and there was my 45-7o deer rifle. I had went deer hunting this evening and had forgot to change them out"would have been a good night to run up on the game warden". I went on in to the dogs and they were treed up a large oak. The oak was pretty bare, but there was two ever green trees one on each side of the oak with limbs going into them. I shined for a while, if he was there he was probably in one of the ever greens. I didnt have anything to shoot him with anyway so I just petted the dogs and called it a night.

Congratulations Chris and Gr.Nite Ch.Gr.Ch. "PR" Misty River Blue Sheba

Chris and Sheba Traveled to Forest, Ms. tonight to their UKC hunt to get Sheba's 5 win and finish her to Dual Grand. This was 3 Nite Ch. wins in a row for Chris and Sheba. This is pretty remarkable considering that chris has never been on but 5 cast. He handled Sheba in each of these. The first two cast he lost. The next 3 he won. NOT BAD
