Bruce

I was on the ph yesterday with garmin, the reps name was Will. Told him about what was going on. Sunday,I messed with the alpha for two hours trying to get it to take another master reset. When powered up,reset screen showed up but wouldn't allow or respong when erase wase touched. Tried to get screen to respond when turned on,nothing would respond on the touch screen. Monday morning while waiting for garmin rep to get on the ph in my office I powered it up and worked like nothing had ever been wrong with it. I went thru every screen for 20 minutes until I got Will on the other end. Told him the problems I was having and explained to him what happened at the office. At that time,he had me do another master reset and asked when was it last updated,I told him a 10 days or so. It's on 3.80 now. He told me they have a new update for my unit Alpha 100 to 4.0 and told me to update when I got home, did that but it tells me there is no update for my unit. Lost in space at this time. Have you heard of this update to 4.0 Thanks,Danny G.

.

Chewbach you have several options for your dog on the screen. If I am reading you correctly instead of a dog you are showing just a triangle.
Select
MAP
MENU
Then the third thing on list should say either HIDE dogs or SHOW dogs. Since they are hid and only option is show I suspect yours says SHOW Highlight that and hit enter.

Notice in the list you also have other options such as showing dogs distance on map etc

Mr. Sawyer that is a tough one. There are two North indications. You have the compass that spins around on the dog page and from the map page in the upper left corner you have an N inside an arrow. Check and see if just the compass on the dog page is off or both are off.

There are several things that effect the compass.
1. Make sure the 320 setting is correct for the type of batteries you are using.
2. Anything with a magnetic field will affect the compass.
Cars, power lines, light batteries in the wrong position.

Make use you calibrate your compass with no interference from any of these.

Danny they did just come out with a 4.0 update. Sometimes it takes several tries before it is recognized.

I went back in this morning and it appears the 4.0 update has been removed. The alpha I installed it on yesterday if I update today will reload 3.8 and my other systems with 3.8 say they are up to date. Yes I had to try several times before it recognized the units. I think it runs a scan on the to check for virus before information sharing can be done. At least that is what looks is happening with my system.

Danny it sounds like you have a power supply (battery) problem. Or a touch screen problem.

What percentage of charge do you have on your battery?
Even if the battery is charged I have seen them cause problems and if you suspect something wrong you can power up your unit on the supplied power cable. You can then see how it works and determine if it is a battery problem or not.

update

just tried it 4 times, keeps telling me there is no update available. Bruce,I have 97% power right now. Sunday nite,I did put it on charger after I got done trying to get it to work. Battery showed 91% when I checked it before I put it on charge. Will, the rep, told me that the new 4.0 was supposed to take care of corruption issues within the software. I don't know about that but it has gotten me a bit on the corrupted side right now. I just can't trust this thing when I'm hunting a hound that's not mine that I'm trying to get ready for the all blue money hunt in Ill next month. They think they can fix it over the ph.I told them that isn't going to happen Going to call them right now,Thanks,Danny G.

4.0 update

Just got off the ph with garmin repagain. They have removed the 4.0 update for now. He went thru and started by having me bring up the calibrate screen page with out going thru the menu page to get to it. He seemed to think that there's corruption going on within the software that works the screen and thought this would do the trick. To get to calibrate screen page without goung to the menu first he had me power up the unit and hold the button in until that screen came up which it did. Pushed the dot 20 or so times and finally said screen was calibrated to unit. He also told me if I had another problem when I power it on and it will not let me navigate thru the menu pages to turn it off and repeat the calibrate screen step again and see if it will let me navigate thru the menu after that's done when I power it back on. Hopefully this got it fixed but I doubt it will. Going hunting tonite so I'll know soon enough! Later,Danny G.

Hi Bruce. Been having problems with one of my alpha collars. It will link up then drop sometimes not re linking up. My other collar is fine. Then I delete the dog. Then re link it back up. It may work for a while then quit again. It's done this 3 different times now. Any help is appreciated . Thanks Jeremy

Finally it was almost flawless

I'm knocking on wood!! Went hunting last nite with birdseye installed, everything went fine and did manage to make 5 trees,3 coons.1 hot chase out of the corn to a den and 1 I couldn't find, maybe he wasn't there. From what I make of it,looks like the bringing up calibration screen by powering it up and holding the button in to bring up the calibration screen and then calibrating the touch screen may have done the trick. The only other strange thing that I noticed is when I powered it up before I went hunting to see if it was going to work was a red pointer arrow came up on the compass page with no collars being turned on. Shut it down and and powerd back up, it didn't come back. Hopefully tonite I get the same results! Later,Danny G.

well I did everything garmin told me to do with my alpha, I have tried different microsd cards like they told me I still have problems with screen locking up then shutting off.i have done the master reset a number of times and garmin wants to replace mine with a used unit I am very unhappy with garmin. they treat it like they don't have a problem with the alpha's when I know they do. I wiash I had just kept my astro 320.

About a week or so ago garmin put out the 4.0 update then pulled it back due to some problem. They have now reissued it and I would update your unit again and see what happens.

Turn the unit off and back on. You didn't say if it was on the dog or on a point of the map. Just turn off and back on.

dc 50

Why did Garmin discontinue the 50 already , I think people will get tired of this an stop dealing with them if they keep doing this . Not everyone wants to upgrade every few months . The only difference in the 50 an t5 is the light I could care less about the light they should keep all they have made so people could have a choice of what they want. I don't understand their thinking on this

They haven't discontinued it yet but it won't be long.

Technology and Engineers Philosophy along with what the customer wants has driven most of these changes.

DC 20--First design targeted bird dogs

DC 30--Changed for the hound hunter

DC 40--Engineer Philosophy to make a compact unit with the GPS antenna protected inside the housing.

DC 50--Took everything the customers said could be improved with the 20, 30 and 40 and came up with the DC 50.

Still needed to bridge the gap between the ALPHA and Astro for the comp hunter along with a few Technology upgrades.

I was about ready to update to the Alpha until i started hearing about so many issues with them shutting down and lockin up. My old 220 and dc30 collars have served me well with no issues for 5 years but the collar batteries are on their last legs. Im sure not gonna spend a grand to get more headaches, Garmin needs to stop useing the paying customer to work out their software bugs, that should be done before the product hits the market. If these things were properly fieldtested they wouldnt need 2 or 3 updates this soon after release. The vast majority of hunters use these units for 2 things DIRECTION and DISTANCE , to many functions just cause alot of user error and software glitches. Guess il wait a while.
And now it seems there are t5s out there with an operable tone feature, UKC is gonna love that.

dc 50

I was told by Purina pro club they had discontinued them when I tried to order one from them for having enough points saved for one. I think they should have a choice instead of just one item I have had good service out of both the 30's an 50's . Why not keep them they work if someone wants the t5 make them to not everyone wants a light on the collars thats the only difference in the 50's an t5
