I just buy pups from a cross that looks good and prefer the gyp to be the reproducer..........seem to do better then just choosing something from a promoted "STUD DOG"

I hear ALOT of people saying the female means more but I don't see it everybody hypes up males!

I personally focus on the female more plus stud dogs are easy to find look on hear every blue male is at stud cause he's a reproducer cause he produced a puppy!

truth is Jesse I prefer to hunt males. I have four kids and dont believe it is right for me to go out and spend thousands on a finished hound..............so I usually spend thousands trying to find the right pup lol. I found out pretty quick that I was money ahead just buying them from a gyp that was producing and was a coondog.

Females

A man with a good female usually has a good pup from her, this is because the owner of the female is paticular as to what he will breed her to. A man with a Stud Dog doesn't always have a good young dog off his stud because MOST are breeding for the money and not to better the breed. (JMO)............Tim

Folks,
Remember Tim's words. There are a few stud owners out there that keep some good females as well, they are the ones that always have a good dog coming on. Good post Tim.

I do agree with Tim. But, if your in it for the money your screwed! We always kept what everyone else past on and had success. If the stud dog does it's job you shouldn't have trouble being able to keep a nice pup, as, it doesn't matter what pup it is it's more of how the pup suits you. I've been critisized on here before about this. If you have a nice stud dog you shouldn't have alot of trouble, but it's not hard to tell whether you have a good one or not real soon in a dog.

I see it different than most. The male or female side, it's not always a 50-50 thing. There are females that just don't produce. And, there are males that just don't produce. A lot of the time when the female is not a good reproducer the male kicks in and makes up the difference. And vice verce. If the caracteristics are known from both the male and female then you can really narrow it down as to what you are getting but if you don't know what your female lacks it's hard to know what your getting and you put everything you've got on the table that the male will pull more than his wait.

From what I've seen outa Hillbilly is deffness, the majority of dogs I've hunted with outa him are def to the world in the woods, most have very nice sounding hound mouths most have volume and most have nice freestyle with layup ability and most don't care bout you,not real personable dogs

Re: tree

We have. You can take a little tree from a dog but you can't put the tree in them. I've made this statement before and I can't stress it enough. The encouraging part I don't do anyway, until your away from the tree. And yes, they for the most part turned out OK. We have had culls, just like everyone. But the main factor, in this case tree, has been placed there already.

Now Dave, you know I'm just trying to learn a thing or two about these Blue dogs. I do know what I'm looking for myself and that is the drifting circling type track dogs that are looking to get to where the coon is. I do not like a trailing type hound that covers and recovers the same ground on each loss. Combine the swinging and drifting style with athletic speed and then sure enough winding, grab a tree style and you've got something. A dog that has to trail till they bump their head into a tree, check the tree by circling around 3 or 4 times before settling in on it is not the style for me.

Speed

Have not seen a lot of it on colder tracks. Morton's man dog moves a colder track on out nicely and will show you the coon at the end.

I like a hound that trees coon when cut loose by itself. Not every time but 9 out of ten is good enough. They do make this model. Have one being customized to meet the criteria now. This type hound has can and will win.
