Yes, my Boone gyp if she comes out like I feel she well. Boone is of my Gertie female X Larry Anderson's Upson's Rocky.

A rainy night hunt. Thunder rolling off fairly steady all night to the south and southwest, but I managed to get 3 drops in with Crow, Trueboy, and Boone. First drop ended on a dead Ash tree full of grape vines. With the rain I couldn't get the bugger to look, if he was there. Second drop was a red hot race with 2 trips on the end of a 40 acre corn field. It's nice when you have hounds like Crow and Trueboy who will call off a hot track like this one that was heading either to a cow barn or a pile of round hay bales. Either way I needed to catch them up. I drove up the lane way 1/4 mile and turned into the same cornfield. We had another red hot race with split tracks for both Trueboy and Crow. I had Boone for the longest time at the corner of the woods 170 yards in front of me. When Crow treed up the edge of the woods and corn about 250 yards. When I drove up to the woods, Boone came to me and followed as I walked to Crow. Trueboy continued to run in the corn, but he finally came in to Crow's tree. This tree lit up with about 8 coons. I picked one out and droped it down for Boone and Crow. I let Boone of the lead and she bailed head first into the coon. I put another shell into the coon so she didn't get eat up. Boone then grabbed the coon and took off up the edge of the corn with it on a full out run. I let Trueboy off the lead and he caught up to her and allowed me too also catch up and to Boone with a lead. I was able to hang the coon up and work Boone on the tree, which was great. As I got back to the truck with my load of hounds, I saw 4 coon sitting up where Boone was standing when I pulled up. As I loaded up the hounds, the heavens again opened up and I decided I was wet enough and called it a night. Here's some picture from tonight.

Trueboy and Crow on the first tree:

Crow on the last tree of the night while Trueboy was still running next to her in the corn:

Boone and Trueboy stretching the coon I put down to Boone and Crow. Trueboy has always been an ass grabber:

This is for Larry Anderson. Boone treeing on a hang up coon. I worked it up with her about 5 times before I figured she had enough:

As I sit on my back deck enjoying the night with a nice dram of 16 y/o anCnoc single malt Scotch, I'm reflecting on the night's hunt. Crow, Trueboy, and Boone are bedded down for the night. A waning crescent mood rises over the Huron as the hum of the neighbor's air conditioner mingles with the drone of crickets. The first drop was a hot race with Crow, Trueboy, and Boone all in it at the tree. The ended in a white pine as a sudden fog drifted in on a northwest wind, making shining the tree near impossible. I couldn't get the critter to look at me. It was nice to see Boone showed treed on the Garmin for a time before I made it to them all. I headed south of town to get away from the fog. This turnout had Crow going deep 1/2 mile through the corn and up the fence row as Boone and Trueboy split off and headed north into the timber. The 2 youngsters got a track going as Trueboy put some steam on it. Crow came back toward them both and ended up treed on a dead ash with grape vines (again). I couldn't get this one to look either, so I cut Boone and Trueboy back into the woods toward the truck and Trueboy treed about 75 yards from the truck. I loaded Crow up and found a coon up a dead ash tree with no grapevines... a rare find for me. Got some good training with Boone on the tree and as the fog thickened, I call it a night. No pictures as I left the camera home. Hopefully we'll be back at it next week.

Thanks to my old friend Ernest Taylor, I got rid of my last Ben X Crow pup. Ernest bought 2 pups off me over 10 years ago and they turned out to be good ones... Honeybee and Heart (Poorboy X Scout). Sadly, we lost ol' Heart this past February, but Honeybee looks real good for a 10 y/o gyp. She'll have some time to help train that new pup of Ernest. I look forward to putting some boots in the woods with Ernest in the near future.

Went out tonight for a quick hunt with Crow, Trueboy, and Gin. Boone come into heat a couple days ago, so her training is on hold for a few weeks. Made 2 trees with Trueboy and Crow before I called it a night. Here's some pictures:

Hunted Trueboy last night with a young dog. Trueboy got treed twice. First one a big oak with a coon at the top. The second was another dead ash loaded with grape vines on the edge of a cornfield. Saw the coon from a distance of 150 yards, but couldn't get it to look again once I made the tree. Nice night, cool with stars big and bright.

Some pictures of Trueboy - First tree:

Cold north wind was a welcome change from the heat of the past 2 days and nights. Made 3 trees with Trueboy. First was a quick lay up. Second was a feed track to a den. Third was a wild 45 minute cornfield chase.

Forgot my camera last week, and again this week! Need to remember it for the Canada Bear Hunt next week with Ken and Sandy Hitchcock, Mike Fairchild, and Gary Meeks of Beardown Outfitters Ontario. Looking forward to the trip! My contact near Cloyne, Mark Snider, tells me the bears are hitting his baits good. Karl Stacer is up with Gary Meeks this week with his group and hopefully those Lake Huron bred Blueticks are pouring on the bear. Up next week is my group with those Hitchcock and Fairchild hounds. I'm taking Trueboy to see if he can indeed run a bear. He's turned into a coon treeing machine.

Last week I hunted Crow, Trueboy, and Boone 3 nights in a row. Boone showed some strong independence by getting off by herself and starting a couple tracks alone. She wasn't able to finish without help, but she's starting out fairly well. We treed a load of coon last week.

Went out last night and made 3 trees with Trueboy and Crow. Had young Ann (Kid X Angel) the first two trees, but she didn't handle too well, so I took her home to work we'll work on her handling some in the yard. I wish I photos of Trueboy and Crow nailing those last 2 trees after a good race in a cattail marsh, following by a good race in a hardwoods. Hitting it tonight with Trueboy, Crow, and Boone. One more night tomorrow, then it's off to Canada!

Had a good hunt last night with Crow, Trueboy, and Boone. Trueboy is looking real good, and Crow is looking more like the Crow of old. On another note, the bear hunting trip to Canada for next week in canceled for varioius reasons, but we'll look at going again in the future.

After dodging raindrops and thunderbolts, Crow and Trueboy finally got split treed last night. Trueboy was in a hole in an old jam pile and Crow had a coon 75 yards away. It was a rough night with the storms going north and west of us, seemingly keeping the coon from running well. But it's always a good night when the hounds are in the woods!

Lost out of my Canada bear hunting trip. Too many egos I suppose was part of it, but staying home and coon hunting helped ease the sting of losing out on my 50th birthday trip. Won't be a next year on this one. Had a good week last week. Crow and Trueboy are looking tough. Crow's looking the best she has in nearly 2 years. Trueboy is split treeing and holding his spot under pressure, even with Crow treed 40 feet away. Great to see. Boone is showing some good things, but still needs to tree better and stay on the tree when I'm coming in and not milling off too far away, but she'll come around. She gritty and too independent at times, but we'll work with it. Nice to see Mike Fairchild is getting some pups out of Doc X Be tonight. Can't wait to see what he ends up with. Talked with Joe Galvas last week and if all goes well and Crow's heat times out right, I will be breeding Grinder to Crow. That'll triple up on some of Harry Darby's great hounds. Full moon coming on hard, so hunting might be light this week, but we'll hit it some to get ready for my annual coon hunting vacation the end of October.

Jim,
Its sad to here of your trip to Canada being cancelled. It seems hard to take when others may choose to trade their integrity, reputation, and honour for lies, deceit and betrayal. Although this seems to be a sad fact of others life choices I am pleased that you have chose to maintain your moral and ethical character. As well as being of great character you have remained true to your word and the truth, some of what others lack. I am pleased to tell you that today with good blood from your kennel our third bear was treed and shot out to the dogs.

I just want to say that I and others I hunt with, appreciate you, your integrity and your hounds. May the Lord richly bless you and your family.
Mike Murphy

Had a nice trip into Canada to meet Mark Snider with his Ben X Crow pups. Mark now has a nice male and female pup to get ready for next year's bear season. It was great to finally met Mark face to face, and I think his young son Hunter really was impressed with those pups. Thanks to my old friend Scott Oulds for riding along today. It was great to have him as a navigator along the Canadian roadways, especially with the 402 by his house being closed down for this morning by the anti-wind turbine protesters. Matt and Penny Turner came up this afternoon to pick up the Kid X Angel female that Matt bought from me. She'll make a good one and I wish she would have been able to stay, but given my kennel situation, I'm sure she'll have a good home with Matt. It was a great visit, and we shared a good, home cooked meal that I was able to throw together after my trip into Canada. Matt had some great stories to share and he thought my Huck pup looked a lot like her sire. I'll be hitting the woods this coming week, and with the cool weather coming in this week, the fur will be coming in on the coon soon.

Had a couple nights of hunting with Crow, Trueboy, and Boone this past week. Both nights we had corn field races that lasted over an hour each night, ending with nice coon up the wood. A few more night of this cold weather and the coon fur should be thickening up soon. Here's a nice photo of Trueboy from the other night:

Had a good night with Crow and Trueboy. It was below freezing even before twilight ended. Frost was heavy, and so were the coon. Got into a woods I've not hunted in over 12 years. Crow and True ran a good track and treed about 360 yards from the truck. Got a nice big sow out of that tree. Decided to hunt back north toward the truck, but Crow and True had other ideas. They went back south and treed another big sow 75 yards from the first tree. It was a long walk back to the truck, but I was happy with the results. Next woods was a den tree, followed by a turn out with a great run ending in another den tree. Made a drop in a corn field with a small swale on the south end. True and Crow ended up with two different tracks and a nice split tree. Crow had a huge boar, and True had a nice sow. Made one last drop that featured a great race over a 1/2 a mile, but it ended in a tile main. End of night.

It's been tough season. We treed more then a few coon with Crow and Trueboy. But some bad luck hit. I was ready to breed Crow when I found out she had heart worms. She's been treated and hopefully in a few weeks we'll get her back in the woods and be able to breed her when she comes back into season come spring. Trueboy has done a nice job by himself and is making a nice hound. I had to cut down on hounds and had to let go some nice young females in the past couple of months.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Keep those hounds in the timber and have a great New Year to boot!

Thanks to all who bought pups and hounds from me in 2013. I hope all turn into good hounds for you in the coming year. I plan to bred Crow one last time in 2014. I would hope to bred to Ben once more, but due to the circumstances, I most likely will bred to Joe Galvas' Grinder male. Again, thank you and have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year!

That sure sounds like its going to be a great cross in 2014 with Stormcrow and Grinder. Ive heard and seen some good things about both of these hounds and what there producing. Shouldnt be hard to find interest in that cross. Have a Merry Christmas Jim

Friday morning I'll wake up well before dawn and take one last ride south on I-69 to the edge of the Salamonie River, a place where I shared many a memorable hunt with my friend, to say one last good bye to my dear friend and hunting buddy, the great and wonderful Joe Searles... Good bye my friend, the Lord is with you now... We pray for blessing for the loved ones and dear friends left behind to remember the impact you had on our lives...

After a lot of thought, prayer, and discussion on what to breed Crow to this spring, I've decided to stay close to home and bred to Topper who is a littermate brother to the Ben dog I've used successfully in the past. I'd like to use Ben again, but it won't be possible at this time. Crow is due in heat in April, so it'll be a June litter by the looks of it. Crow was to be bred last November to Joe Galvas Grinder male, but we found she had heartworms, and needed to be treated. She is good to go now. See below for pedigree on this upcoming cross.

I contacted Rick Guy from Sparta, WI this afternoon. He has a nice female coming 3 y/o this April off Ben X Crow. He really likes his gyp, named Stella, and wants to breed her this spring. I talked to him about Pat Quiantance about the Earl male Pat has (Slewfoot X Crow) and Rick is interested in breeding to Earl, and I love the idea of this cross and was praying I could get it done sooner than later. I sent Pat a facebook message to call Rick and hopefully they can get this cross done, and I can get a female out of it!

Snow is deep here and the long, cold of winter is showing no signs of letting up. When the weather does break, Trueboy will be ready to hit the timber running!
