Well we finally got a little shower. I sure plan to go out this weekend and see how things go. Coonhunting and Deerhunting here I come.

we finally got just a little rain but were way way under the normal rain fall for the year.

I dont hardly see how a dog can trail its been so dry but they just keep on tracking & treeing them dudes.

But after living in Utah & seeing how dry it gets there I understand when I see them trail a coon here because we are not anywhere close to being as dry as they are out there.

Be glad to have you back for a hunt anytime Steve,maybe Brad & Craig can make it also before we have the pup hunt.

Plenty of Rain

Well we had some tornados around so I didn't go out. However, we got plenty of rain. Got back here to the house to let the house dogs out and Sister and my little beagle went over towards the neighbors yard next thing I know the race was on. I hollered at them becuase I figured it was a deer. However, about the time Sister came back to me I saw the beagle wasn't heading out. So I got closer to see what was going on. Sis ran back over there to help and they put a possum up a tree. Sis wasn't barking but was definately showing interest in seeing what was up there. Now I should be able to do something again with these older pups.

Well....

The little beagle I was talking about above got out in the road when my wife let her out to use the restroom last night and got ran over. I keep Daisy on a chain, all the time, and Sister in a pen, most of the time, when I let them out to go. However, the little beagle normally does alright by herself. My wife couldn't find her and finally found her on the road. Sure hated to lose her. Not only was she a good pet but was pretty good at treeing squirrels and running rabbits.

Rain, Steve we have been getting a little here we might have gotten a inch since u were here just cant remember it ever being this dry here so every little drop helps.

Fireball

He has been dead about 25 years now. The closest thing to him is the dogs I now have. The pups I have on the way though will be genetically like the first pups out of him in that time, due to heavy linebreeding. Pretty sure, they are all sold though even if she had 15 of them. However, they are from frozen semen and so chances are there won't be a whole lot.

Steve,

I would be careful declaring that you have the closest thing to fireball around there are several guys that have dogs up close to him that have been linebreeding. Not to mention dogs directly out of Twister showing Twister and fireball three and four times in the third generation.

Hey Jeff good to hear from you..

Yeah, well we have had numerous discussions on here and I have also talked to several people, many you know, and no one knows of anything near as heavy as mine. If I didn't think it was fact I sure wouldn't put it on here for everyone to see. Like everyone else, all I can do is work with the information I have been given. However, I will put what I have put on here many times before if there is anyone out there that knows of anything closer to Fireball please let me know. The closest I have found so far, anywhere was still about 10% off from my Daisy female. Never mind these Twister pups. I'm not in any way saying there aren't hounds out of Twister out there but there aren't and haven't for about 12 years been any pups out of him that's for sure. From the looks of things Daisy is pregnant and is about to pop out some stuff that is about double the amount of Fireball of most anything out there. In case you are wondering Reddy and Rowdy were the closest I have found other than mine.

I crossed a brother of Ready's on Bailey and one of those pups will be crossed back to Rocket Directly out of Rocky. I was just mentioning that there are a lot of different individuals out there that have been linebreeding. What gets it done in the woods seems to be the way to go. There are some nice dogs out there that dont get the attention or bred to like they should.

I totally agree....

To me there are some of these really nice more unknown hounds out there that never see the light of day in the breeding pen, like Ready. He's all the way up in Wisc. I and several people that are fairly up on Fireball stuff, had never even heard of him. To me distance doesn't matter though so you can guarantee I will have some "Ready" in my kennel eventually. He is sure nice bred. If you are taking a brother of his and breeding him to Bailey, wow those should be some nice balanced ones too. How old is Bailey getting now? From all accounts she's sure a nice one also. If you have some extra's up your way from this cross let me know. I'd sure like to have one. I'm moving to a new house and I am getting it to where I'll be able to hunt alot more. I'm also trying to collect up enough of this blood to where I don't have to drive all over the country like I have for years to breed what I want. But as you know keeping this blood gets harder and harder as the years go by. Keep up the good work becuase I sure like what you've been doing since I been gone.

P.S. For those wondering how to figure % relations I will post this on my next one. Good Hunting to All

Well here we go...

I have PM'd this to a few guys and those of you that are or have been big into livestock breeding likely already know what I'm talking about. This of course is not an exact science but does give you an awfully good measuring stick and is as close as most of us coonhunters will ever get to figuring the real relationship of our hounds to their ancestors. Unless, you want to go spend a couple of $100,000 getting a full genetic workup of your hound and it's ancestors.

Here it is. Basically, this would apply for Sire or Dam either one of course.

great great great great grandparent (7th. Gen)........................0.78% of your hound
great great great great grandparent (6th. Gen).................1.56% of your hound
great great great grandparent (5th. Gen).............3.12% of your hound
great great grandparent (4th. Gen) .............6.25% of your hound
great grandparent (3rd. Gen)...12.5% of your hound
grandparent (2nd. Gen)...........25% of your hound
parent (1st. Gen) .............50% of your hound
Your Hound .....100% itself

So for example as you can see 7th. gen. doesn't add up as quick becuase the percentage just gets so small. Now don't get me wrong though I have seen some say that anything past the 3 gen. doesn't make any difference but if they are tight enough bred further back it can make a big difference. Say the same hound was in the 4th. gen. 4 times it would make it genetically like it was the grandparent (2nd gen.) even though it wasn't even in a 3 gen. PED.
So all you have to do is find out where the dog you have multiple times in your PED fits into the above bracket and add up the percentages, like this. Say if Ol' Ace was in the PED in the 3rd., 4th, & 5th. gen. you would add them like this. 12.5+6.25+3.12=21.87%.
So 21.87% is the relationship of this hound to the above original hound, Ol' Ace, making it almost genetically a grandson or granddaughter.

Sounds like some of those that don't think Lightin's for real can come and prove it. Like I said I sure liked what I saw from him. Sure think he would cross well on some females too. Just look at these Lightin and Speed Queen pups. Never mind his first ones being around two and the female with all the wins right now is from another female completely.

WE TURN HIM LOOSE UP A LANE AND TO THE RIGHT OF US IS A POND ((LIGHT'IN)) HAS BEEN HUNTED HERE MANY TIMES BECAUSE U CAN RUN A COON OFF THIS POND AND GET HIM TREED ((99% OF THE TIME)) WELL ((LIGHT'IN)) GOES IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK HOOKS LEFT & GOES AROUND THE POND & HE STARTS BACK UP THE LANE TOWARDS WHERE STANDING I GET HIM CUT OFF SEND HIM UP ALONG THE FENCE LINE BACK TOWARDS TO WOODS HE LEAVES ON A DEAD RUN & NEVER LOOKS BACK TO SEE IF ANYTHING IS WITH HIM OR NOT.

((LIGHT'IN)) GO INTO THE WOODS GET STRUCK WORKS HIS TRACK OUT ((BY HIMSELF)) GETS TREED ON A BIG OL DEN & DOES ALL THIS REAL QUICK !!!!!!! Surely you're not saying that these number's are actually even remotely close to their relationship to "Ol' Ace" himself are you? Even if you do take these very basic numbers into effect for what they are...You cannot rule out the effect that environment has on heritability (which even multipile $100,000's of dollars couldn't tell you). Nevermind the fact that if it was that easy, then Gregor Mendel (1822-1884) woud not have been needed to break down the very basics of dominant and recessive genes (which means that 100% trait you're counting on is automatically broken down to 50% AT BEST). I can break down my dog's pedigree with a much higher percentage of "dogs that tree their own coon" and still come out with a worthless pup regardless of their ancestors or my time with them in the woods. Not trying to ruin your credibility, just think those numbers are WAY OFF in the terms of "genetic makeup". This is strictly scientifically proven and in no way should reflect on anyone's opinion of me or my worthless pup that I'm gonna take to the woods tomorrow night just like I have every other night.

Dominant and Recessive genes are not inherently good or bad. All animals period have 100% of their genetic make-up period, not 50%. If they didn't we would have half formed non-living things. I'm sorry. I thought your percentages were reflecting back on the relationship of traits in any given dog. I was not aware that you are impressed to get a whole dog and not a half of a dog. I must have some Fireball blood in mine too bc I haven't had a half a dog yet either.

Well did some figuring

I hadn't bothered to sit down and sure enough figure the relationship of these pups, Daisy has in her, until last night. From fast figuring I was getting something around 48% relation to Fireball looks like it's instead about 47%. So I was off by one percent. They will also have a 62.5% relation to Twister. Sure can't wait to see, in a few weeks, how many she has in her.

Fireball= 7.02 %
TWISTER= 14.05 %
Oak Mike= 8.58 %
and Ace 6.24 %

Of course you could in actual genetic make-up have a little more or a little less, just like mine, but this would give you something fairly close. What generations is Twister appearing in your papers on your male?
