Sheba, Doll V. and Rain----------Tramp

Me, Clayton and Chris had made plans to hunt north of here last night across the river, but I went Deer hunting yesterday evening and had shot a deer and had to go back last night and hunt it, so I told them to go ahead without me and That when I got thru with the deer I would hunt Tramp some where around here, so they went on across the river with Sheba, doll V and Rain. They had a good hunt. They said all the dogs did good. I think they had a little problem with so much water and it was still raining last night. We were dry and wanted some rain, now we are getting more than we wanted. (never satisfied) They made 4 trees and looked at three coons.
After I got the deer and got it dressed and took it to the deer processor it was getting pretty late and I was tired, but ole Tramp was ready to go, so we went to the river. first drop he didn't get anything going. Second drop, he struck a working track and moved it out crossed a slough and treed about 300 yrds in. I started in to him, had to cross the slough that was almost over my boots. Went on in to him and he was treed up a real big oak on the edge of another slough. I shined the tree for a few minutes and then hit the squaller and he looked at me. He was laying on a big limb just off the main tree about 3/4 of the way up. I petted Tramp up a little and we headed back to the 4-wheeler. We left this one to run again.

Sheba, Doll V and Gin

Clayton and Chris Had promised their boys that they could go with us last night so we went down to the Greens
Creek bridge and turned the dogs east down the creek. They went down the creek for about 150 yrds and struck a working track and moved it on down the creek another 200 yrds and treed. They all sounded good so we walked in to them. When we got to the tree we knew pretty quick that they had missed this one. The Tree wasn't very big, it leaned out into the water with vines coming off of it going out into bigger trees. We leashed up the dogs and Clayton and his two boys went back and got the 4-wheelers and brought them around and Chris and his two boys and me went on down the creek with the dogs. The dogs struck again about another 200 yrds down the creek. This was a better track and they moved it on down the creek another 300 yrds and treed. We walked in to them and they were treed across the creek. Lucky for us it was only a little over knee deep here. Chris and one of the boys crossed the creek and me and Cole stayed on the side that we were on. We could see the tree better on our side than you could on the side the dogs were treed on. We shined the tree for a little and Cole got his coon squaller out and blew on it and two coons looked at us from the other side. I told him he had done a good job. Alll of these boys are good kids that love to coon hunt. Chris shot one of them out to the dogs. It had been a while since Gin had had a coon out to her. After they got finished with the coon we gathered up the dogs and moved on down the creek to where Clayton and his boys were with the 4-wheelers. Claytons two boys decided they would go back home so they took one of the 4-wheelers and left. The rest of us continued on hunting. We mad two more drops and two more trees, but they were both den trees. By this time there was frost all over everything and it was pretty cold so we decided to call it a night. 12-30-14

Claytons Mishap

I got some bad news about dinnertime today. Both of Claytons boys and Chris's boys too ride Dirt bikes. They ride them in competition, so here a few weeks ago Clayton built them some dirt Ramps, Now these ramps are several feet tall and a long way apart. The boys were practicing on their jumps yesterday and Clayton decided to take a turn. Now dirt bykes are nothing new to Clayton, but when he made the jump, he over jumped his landing and came down hard. He broke his ankle on the left leg and broke his right foot. I think the Dr. told him he wasn't sure about the ankle, but he knew the right foot would have to be operated on. I talked to him on the phone today about 1 oclock. He was waiting on a wheel chair to come home, but he will have to go back Thursday to see a Specialist to tell them what all will have to be done. I sure hated this. Clayton and his family are some of the finest people you will ever meet and Clayton is one of the toughest guys I've ever met, so I know he will be back up and around before most people would, but he told me today that was the end of his bike riding. I know you can get hurt doing anything including coonhunting, but on these Dirt Bikes its not if you are going to get hurt its WHEN, but we are all thankful. It could have been a lot worse.

CLAYTON

MR. Jack I hate to hear that about Clayton. He will be laid up for a while. I hope everything goes good with his recovery. 3 years ago I decided to have my dirt bike rebuilt and thought I was going to get back into riding that thing. It is a old 86 model Honda CR 500 R which they say was the baddest ever made. I spent about 1,200 getting it right. Rode it around about 30 minutes to get the feel back then pointed it at the first jump I had made in years. When I landed and got it stopped, my mid-life crisis was over. Its still parked under my shop and hasn't been cranked since that day. I will be praying for Clayton and his recovery, Take Care.

I hope your friend heals up well! It amazes me how many of us old coon hunters raced motocross or had dirt bikes when we younger... A rowdy bunch we were!!!

Clayton

Thank you guys for the Well Wishes and prayers. I'm sure when he feels a little better he will be reading this and I know that he will appreciate it.

Gin

I took Gin out alone last night before all this Rain started, Made three drops. She hunted good, and I figured the coons would be moving, but I never got a bark. This coons have sure acted strange all last year and so far this year. I have a couple of places that I have out feeders for the pups and young dogs and a lot of times you can go to these and never get a bark. Me and Clayton and Chris have set out live traps to catch a coon to work pups with and its real hard to catch one. I seldom ever kill a coon around here so I don't know what the problem is. A lot of the deer hunters around here that in years past were always complaining about all the coons eating their corn are not seeing many this year. Maybe we'll have a good crop this year. 1-2-15

Jack

Hope Clayton heals up soon and can get back to the woods in due time.
I was talking to a guy about some of the coon movement around here and that some places where we never kill any not seeing any tracks in the snow or being able to get a track or tree going. He had said that in some places the coon migrate into buildings or other areas over the winter. I had not really heard that before but it kind of makes sense.
Take Care Jack,
Scott

Thanks

Thanks for all the prayers and comments. Finally got my wife to move the computer to a more accessible location for my wheel chair. Made a dumb mistake on my part and now have 8 weeks to think about it. I sure hate it as I had a few hunts planned for Doll V and 2 hunts for my feist dog. I've got a few good friends who offered to handle my dog and me sit on the Kubota and listen after this surgery. I'm sure I'll be reading every post daily until this is over so you fellows keep writing about your hunts. Thanks again

Tramp

Took Tramp out alone tonight. 1st drop he went in about 150 yrds and treed. I walked into the tree. I should have said wadded into the tree. these swamps are full of water right now. He was treed up a large oak. I shined for a few minutes and then turned my light off and found the coon by the light of the moon. I petted ole Tramp on the head a few times and we left this one to run again. We went on down the swamp a ways and turned loose again. He went in about 350 yrds to where the deep water starts and made a wide circle and came back in. never barked. I loaded him up and we went to the river. I turned him down a branch about half way in to the river. He went in about 450 yrds and made a circle and came back by, he never stopped when he came by and left out again. He went in about 650 yrds. He didn't open, but I could tell on the Garmin that he was working on an old cold track. He worked across a couple of sloughs, a few nights before this last rain I could wade them without going over my boots, but now it would be over waist deep in there. After he came out of the last slough he began to open and warm the track up. The coon left the slough and went up through some 5 year old planted pines, thick stuff in there. He made a circle through the pines and came back to the slough. went up the slough a ways and back into the pines, and back to the slough again getting closer to the River Road all the time. He came out on the River Road near some houses and I don't know what happened there. I don't know wheather the coon ran the road or what, but when I got to him I picked him up. We don't have a lot of traffic there this time of night, but it don't take but one. This was the first time that I had run one out to the road in a long time. I would have liked to have gotten this one out to him, but we'll run him again one night. Tramp had a light coat of ice on him so we decided to call it a night.-------1-5-15

Tramp

Hunted Tramp alone again tonight. 1st drop. He went in about 200 yrds and struck a pretty good track. He moved it out of there for about 500 yrds and treed. I was able to get to about 25 yrds of where he was treed on my 4-wheeler. My kind of coon. he was treed up a smaller pine that grew in the middle of three larger pines. I shined for awhile but couldn't get to where I could see anything. I cant hardly see them anyway unless they decide to look at me, and he wasn't about to do that as bright as that moon was. I tried to see him without my light, just by the moonlight , but the trees were to thick for that. We gave up after a while and moved on up a ways and turned loose again. He probably didn't go a hundred yrds and struck another good track. moved it on in another 100 yrds and treed. I walked in to him and this time he was treed up a gum tree, but again it grew up right in the middle of three big pines. I looked at the gum tree and he wasn't in it, but after looking at it I was sure he wouldn't be, because the limbs in the pines had the gum tree wrapped up. I shined the pines for a while, but soon gave up, as it is just about impossible to find one in these big pines with the moon shining as bright as it was tonight, especially with no vines or anything to shake. We made it back to the 4-wheeler and moved on up a ways and turned Tramp loose again. He went in about 300 yrds and made a circle and came back by and moved on out again. He went in about 600 yrds and hadn't struck. I was just enjoying the night and the night sounds and hadn't looked at my Garmin in several minutes and when I did he was over 900 yrds in so I decided I had better catch up some for he was getting in close to a black top road. I got in to about 100 yrds of him and he was working an old cold track pretty close to the highway. I got on the highway so I could watch out for him, as long as he stayed off the highway I would let him work the coon, but that didn't happen for in a few minutes he was crossing the highway. I decided we had better not push our luck so I picked him up and we called it a night.-----1-6-15

HUNTING

Sounds like your having some decent hunts despite all the rain we have had. That's a credit to some good hounds when they can get it done under less than ideal conditions. I have been wanting to get you over this way for another hunt but my swamp is flooded bad as yours and deer season is still in. After it closes I have several more good spots with some higher ground that we will have to go tree a few in. I'm being that Candy coon hunter tonight and setting on the couch. Wind chill is already 24 and dropping fast so internet coon hunting and a bowl of ice cream is the plan tonight. Give those ole hounds a little extra straw and leave those faucets dripping the next few days. Tell Clayton I hope he gets well soon and back to coon hunting before long. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Cold

Steve I did like you last nite I sat by the fire last nite and listened to the wind blow. Chris came by and picked up Sheba and treed a couple. Shes been doing a good job. After pulling her out of retirement and having a litter of pups I think he has got her back to hitting on all cylinders again. Jeremy said Shadow was doing a good job. I haven't been hunting with him in a while. I'd like to get back out with him soon and see him go again. Right now I think I'm going to see if the deer are moving. I need to get some deer steaks on the table and in the freezer. Good hunting.---1-7-15

Gin

After I had gotten the doe that I had shot dressed and took to the processor I took Gin out for a short run 1st drop she went in about 150 yrds hit a cold track and trailed a short distance and treed. I walked in to her and she was treed up a large Turkey Pine. I shined for a while but never could get to where I could see the tree very good for under growth and other large trees. couldn't get him to look so soon gave up and we went to the river. Turned Gin down a branched that ran through the swamp on its way to the river. She went in about 300 yrds and struck a cold track. She worked it on toward the river about another 300 yrds and treed. I rode the 4-wheeler to about 75 yrds of her got my rifle and walked on in to her. She was treed up a large oak. This would have been a great place to take some pictures. I had took my camera with me the last few times that I went hunting, but I didn't have it with me tonight. I shined the tree for a few minutes without seeing anything. I took my squaller out and when I blew it he looked at me from out on a big limb about 3/4 up the tree. I decided to give her this one. After she was done with it I petted her up some. I got the coon and we walked back to the 4-wheeler and called it a night.------1-8-15

Gin

Jack,
Glad to hear that you have Gin to the point where you can take her out alone and get it done. Bill says that was a pretty good cross. You sure have done a good job with her.
Take Care,
Scott

Thanks Scott

Gin is making a nice little coon dog. Scott, not knocking any other dog that you may ever breed her too, but If you ever breed HammerHead back to Dutch put me down for a pair of females.

Will do Jack. Not sure how many litters Hammerhead will produce but we hope she lives for quite awhile yet.

Ms. State Deep South Classic Championship

Jeremy, Chris and I traveled to Bay Springs, Ms. last night to their Ms. State Deep south Classic Championship Hunt. Bay Springs always puts on a great hunt and last night was no exception. I think they hunted 40 dogs there last night. I believe there were 2 grand nite dogs, 9 nite champions and 29 registered dogs. Congratulations to the winners: Dan Brady With Grand Nite Championn Ben-Walker-Grand Nite Champion winner. Chris Fortenberry with Nite Champion Sheba-Bluetick-Nite Ch. winner. Bo Long with Cookie-Bluetick-1st. place and overall high scoring dog. Jack Smith with Gin-Bluetick-2nd place this was Gin's first competition hunt. J.D. Smith-walker-3rd. I would also like to congratulate Justin Harrington on his cast win with Nite Ch. Ruby-Bluetick. Jeremy said his cast ran a coon in a beaver pond the full time and never made a tree. I was real proud for Chris and Sheba. There was only one coon treed in her cast and She treed it alone for 225+. Thanks to the officers of the Ms. State coonhunters. President Tim Dillon, Vice President Jeremy Purvis, Secretary and Treasurer Scotty McMillan and the Bay Springs Club for a great hunt.

Gin

Gin is a spitting image of her mother Hammerhead. She is sure a good looking dog. I love what I always called the high tan markings on her. Some people call it monkey face. I have a half sister of hers here out of Logan that I can not wait to get started this year. Good luck with her and Clayton thanks for the picture. I can see her and Tramp making some nice pups some day.

She does look like Hammerhead.. She was my pick, because of the Monkey face, I love that......
