I've got four preacher colored pups that will be ready to start in the spring. I hope to find a dandy!

Just because they have that color doesn't mean they are Preacher Bred. . . . . . I am taking a psychology class and we have learned about genetics, and a dog most certainly doesn't have to be bred by any dog at all to be that color. Dogs can get their color form 50 years back in their blood line, just because they have that color or markings doesn't mean they was bred by preacher. and just because they have these colors and markings DOES NOT MEAN THEY HAVE THE WRONG PAPERS IF THEY ARE NOT PREACHER BRED DOGS, MR. WICK

I don't want to sound like a smart A but you need to study genetics instead of psycology in order to correct Mr. Wick so profoundly. If true preacher color is a dominant trait as I believe it to be dogs that are not preacher color bred to each other cannot produce preacher color. It's like looking down in a glass of water from above, if there is no oil on top where you can see it, then there is no oil in the glass. Lots of color on a Walker dog does not mean it has "preacher color"

Thanks

Probably off topic

Doubt she counts as the topic of the thread, but she was the only walker dog Ive owned colored up like this.
She was out of a dog called Hilltop Hank, and was a heck of a coondog. That's all I know.

Well not to sound like a smart A back but the preacher dog had to get that color from somewhere right???? and if im not mistaken which i could be but im sure the dogs that was in his ped. had other offspring and they had offspring as well. Sure the dogs with this color may somewhere down the line be related to this preacher dog but to say every dog with this color goes back to the preacher dog is a lie and isn't even close to being true. Thats all im saying

I have a barn full of preacher blood. I can tell you that about half of my pups come out colored like preacher. The ones that come out looking like black n tans with white feet and chests are the ones to keep. The pups that look like normal walkers are just average coon dogs. What ever color has to do with mental traits I have no Idea but I know what I am talking about.

As Mr Wick said in his book be careful what you put into a dog It will come back to bite you in the rear.

Crybaby is going strong, still loves to hunt as long as you can stay out. She is starting to show a little age, but still the best coon dog I've ever seen! Warrior is the Elvis pup. He is a great dog, actually my favorite hound. He got a first place win in UKC, then I broke my knee and haven't been able to competition hunt since. Hopefully, I will get him titled in the spring. My youngest pup is Jesse. She is out of Crybaby and Trackman. She was just getting started good before my accident. I am just now getting her back in the woods.
Thanks for asking!

Preacher Ad

Thanks for posting that ad.

I remember that ad very well. It drew my attention back then, and has always stuck with me.

I really liked the few Preacher dogs that I saw and hunted with way back then. Smart, well-mannered, easy handling, and beautiful locators.

Question for Dave or John :

Steve Brookshier had a young unstarted dog laying around his place years ago out of Puducha and Preacher that John bought.
What was this dogs name?

I'm assuming that you are talking about Wick's Ozark Tanner, as he was out of that cross. I believe he was the last son of Preacher advertised at stud.

Thought, i'd put in on here. I have several Walker strain, Not Trigg, foxhounds that are this color. The chase and the horn foxhound registries, both reg. this coloration as Black and Tan. Even if thet have some white points. I believe this coloration was with the breed when maupin was breeding, and will continue with the breed, walker fox hounds and coonhounds. The other thing, Mr,Trigg got his best stock from Maupin and the W#alker boys.

I grew up around Goodmans , and some of them will come black/tan .... calico , lemon spotted ... you name it .

A foxhound that gets some age and falls out of races to tree coon is one salty dude ....

Yes those color keep on breeding if you pop them back out. We made a pretty tight finley river cross several years back and got one lemon and white female and one lemon and white male. I have some lemon and white foxhounds, that bred to the right male will throw 90% black and tan pups. If its in em its gonna come out somewhere!
