Tramp and Smoke

My neighbor Odell came by tonight and we loaded up Tramp and Smoke and headed for the swamp. We turned them off an old woods road into an oak flat. We talked and waited as they got deeper. I had just told Odell that we had better get a little closer when I heard Tramp open at 930 yrds, with Smoke opening right behind him. We got to within about 450 yrds of them. We listened as they worked the track. They made a circle and angled back toward us. Smoke bumped a tree a couple of times and moved on. They were working in a place that I knew still had a lot of water in it from all the rains that we have had. They moved the track on in deeper and at 650 yrds Smoke locked up treed with Tramp right behind him. We started toward them and got to within about 150 yrds of them and had to walk the rest of the way. It took us awhile to get to them as we had to walk around several sloughs and cross one on a log. When we got to them they were treed on a small tree that went up into a large oak that you can see in the picture above. I tried to shine it, but you couldn't see anything for all the leaves and the other trees around it, and no vine anywhere. We petted the dogs up and headed back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night.

Tramp and Smoke

My neighbor Odell came by again tonight and we loaded up Tramp and Smoke and headed to the swamp. We turned them into what I call the sunken swamp and they went in about 350 yards and struck a bad track and started working it. They headed down river the same way that Smoke went the other night. They had done got in there about 700 yrds and I told Odell that we had better catch up to them, but things had picked up and they were moving down river at a fast pace. They had gotten deep and I knew we needed to get to them and If they hadn't reed by then we needed to catch them, for I did not know his part of the river swamp that they were in , nor who owned it. We finally caught up to them and got to within 125 yrds of them and I called Tramp and he shut it down pretty quick and came in and Smoke did the same. We moved back up the swamp to where I knew where I was at and turned tem loose again. They struck a hot track about 200 yrds in and came back our way and crossed the woods road that we were on and went into a real thick area that is covered with briar vines and briars, They made a circle in there and came back our way, and I think is was going to cross back into the swamp, but I think we turned him and he made a sharp left turn for about 50 yrds and treed out in all that stuff. They were not over 50 yrds off the road, but that was a rough 50 yrds. We made our way into them and they were treed up what I think was a pine. That is it in the picture above. The tree was only about 20 feet tall and te limbs on it was thick and reached way out from the tree and with all the other trees around it and all covered with vines, you could not see anything. I backed way out from the tree to where I could just see the top of it and told Odell to shake a vine and when he did the coon ran up to the small limbs right in the very top. I told Odell to stop shaking the vine. I think he was going to jump, but when Odell quit shaking the vine, he went back down in the thick part of the tree and I never saw him again. We got the dogs out of there and called it a night.

Tramp

Took Tramp out for a short run tonight. It sure was hot. Turned him into the sunken swamp and he went in about 600 yrds and I could tell on the Garmin that he had started working an ole cold track, but it was so cold that he wasn't opening on it. He worked it on in about 300 yrds opened a few times on track and treed. I didn't think he was right, but walked in to him and he was treed up a medium sized tree with other trees and vines going into it, it was thick enough for him to hide, but if he was there we could not get him to look. I really don't think he was there. With all that rain we had earlier, we are beginning to need another shower, all that mud where the river flowed through the swamps is drying up and making trailing rough. We walked back to the 4-wwheeler and called it a night.

Tramp

Mr. Billy Trice and Mr. Barry Corde From Alabama came down to night and hunted with me and Tramp. I've had better hunts, but not with better people. Tramp did manage to tree one ole cold track, but If he had the coon we could not find him. Some time during the hunt Tramp's tracking collar had quit working and I couldn't track him, at least that's what I thought. When we got to the tree where he as treed. He didn't have his collar on. The Garmin said it was 700 yrds back in the swamp. Mr. Billy and Mr. Cord wanted to go with me to help find it, but it was getting late and they had a long drive home. I told them not to worry about the collar. I would come back and find it. We came on out and they picked up a pup out of Tramp and Gin and Headed back to Ala. I sure did enjoy having them down to hunt and visit. I went back after they left and found Tramps Tracking collar. It was in a thick spot that he had went through about 20 yrds off a woods road.

Pups going to new homes

Mr. Tim McNaughton and his wife Dekota came here a few days ago and picked up a pup out of Tramp and Gin. I enjoyed their visit. They didn't get to stay very long as they had to get back to Texas

Mr. L.J.Carlin had a pup picked up today and she is on her way to Missouri. She is out of Tramp and Gin also.

Tramp and Sheba 11

Took Tramp and Sheba 11 out for a run tonight. There was a slight drizzle of rain falling as we drove to the swamp and it kept it up all the time that we were hunting. The coons seemed to be moving good. We turned them off an ole woods road into the swamp and they went in about 150 yrds and struck a working track, They moved it in another 100 yrds and treed. They didn't really tree like they meant it, but they stayed put and we walked into them. They were treed up a tall Tuplar Gum. It was real bushy up toward the top with no vines to shake. He could have been there, but I could not find him. I really think they just missed him. We took them off the tree and walked them out about 20yrds and cast them on down the swamp. They went in about 200 yrds and struck another working track and moved it on in another 200 yrds and treed. They sounded a lot better this time and we walked in to them and they were treed up a medium sized oak, but this one had a vine in it. I got to where I could see one side of the tree pretty good and Odell shook the vine and he looked at me. We left him to run again and went back to the 4-wheelers and moved on down the swamp. We cast them back into the swamp and they went in 150 yrds and struck a cold track in ankle to knee deep water. They started working it back up the swamp. They worked it up and started moving it pretty good. They moved it in about 500 yrds and locked up treed. I looked on the garmin and they were treed next to the same road that we had the truck parked on, about 400 yrds farther up. We rode back around to them and they were treed about 20 yrds off the road. Barry and billy, notice I had my 4-wheeler with me tonight. LOL. They were treed up a large oak, The one that's in the picture above and it had a vine in it too. I got to where I could partially see the tree and Odell shook the vine and he looked at me. We left this one to run again also and walked back to the 4-wheeler. It was still drizzling rain. We called it night. As I write this its still drizzling rain.

Tramp 11 and Smoke

Took these two out for a run tonight, Struck 3 coons and only treed 1 due to circomstances. The first coon we struck. They went in about 200 yrds and struck a fair track and started moving it out. I was watching them on the Garmin. They moved the coon north and that was alright, but they began to bare west toward a black top highway. I told Odell that we had better get around there because they were getting close to the blacktop. We took off and got there about the same time the dogs did. There are not many cars on this highway, but we all know that it only takes one and this was the same highway that Gin was killed on, so we didn't take any chances we caught the dogs
and headed to the river. As we were going in we crossed a colvert that a spring fed branch runs through. When I crossed the colvert the dogs started barking, so I stopped and turned them loose. They had a good track going right quick. They moved in about 150 yrds and Tramp locked up treed with Smoke about 1 bark behind him. We walked into them and they were treed up a large oak With other large trees around it. I took a couple of pictures and walked out and could see the top of the tree thru a small opening and there he sat nervous and looking around. We left him to run again and cast the dogs on down the branch They moved in about 200 yrds and struck a bad track and started working it on down the branch. They crossed a slough and made a circle and started toward the river. When they got to the river they turned north upriver. I had not thought to much about the gators until Odell got to talking about them, and the more he talked the more worried I got for the dogs, for I know that there are a couple of big ones that stays in this area. We were down there earlier today and saw where a big one had crossed from the lake down the lake drain and had walked down through the sand in our boat ramp to the river. His foot print in the sand was about 11 inches across. a pretty good sized gator. The dogs were coming right up the edge of the river and this is where the gators likes to get them. When the dogs got to the boat ramp we caught them and called it a night.

Chris and Clayton came by about dark last night and we loaded up Tramp and Smoke. First drop we did not get a strike. We watched them on the Garmin and Smoke started getting close to a black top and we went around and gathered them up and went on to another part of the swamp, turned them up a branch and they went in about 200 yrds and struck a cold track and worked it about another 300 yards and treed out in the middle of a big cut over. I let the young guys walk to this one. They said they were treed up a big Magnolia tree and they could not get to where they could see the tree. They came back out and we went on up the swamp and turned them up a creek. They went in about 300 yrds and struck another cold track and started working it. They worked it out and got it moving pretty good and I was really enjoying listening to them work when I heard that dying locate of Tramp with Smoke close behind. We had to go around to another part of the swamp to get in there to them. Theyy were treed up a big beech tree that went up about 15 feet and was bent over almost flat and the top 3/4 of the tree ran strait out into other trees. This was some of Hurricane Katrina's work. We shined for several minutes, but he could have been anywhere. We got the dogs and walked back to the 4-wheelers and called it a night. Chris and Clayton had things to do early this morning. I told them we could go ahead and hunt and I would get them in, in time they could do what they needed to do, but they didn't go for it.

Tramp 11

Got a chance to take Tramp 11 out tonight. It had been a few months since he has had any hunting put on him and it showed. He went hunting pretty good, Struck a working track and moved it out pretty good and got treed, but he just wasn't as sharp as he was when I was hunting him a lot. He's kind of like his owner, hes got fat and out of shape. As you can see how thick it was in there in those hedges, a coon could walk through them for a hundred yrds or more and never touch the ground. He was treed in next to a branch that runs through there. It was only about ankle deep to night, but when we are getting a lot of rain, there is a lot of water that runs through there. It was pretty warm out there tonight. Tramp still acted like he was ready to go, but after I got out of that thick stuff, I was ready to call it a night.

Hello Mr. Jack,
The Summer hunting is nice but you can sure work up a sweat too! Glad to hear you got Tramp out and in the timber.
Take Care,
Scott

Tramp 11

Chris And Clayton came by and picked up Tramp last night and took him out for a much needed hunt. They said that Tramp looked good and treed a coon pretty quick. They had a pup along out of Shadow and Gin that ran and treed. They knocked the coon out for the pup. I was going to take Sheba 11 out for a run while they were hunting Tramp, but I got to having trouble with my 4-wheeler, so I just came on back to the house.

Scott, you can sure get hot out there in a hurry right now. Some nights I don't see how the dogs stand it. I get soaking wet just sitting on the 4-wheeler listening. Hope its a little cooler up there than it is here. I talked to Rod Rose the other night and the temp. has been higher up there than it is here, but they don't have the humidity up there that we do here and that humidity is what makes it so tough. Good huntin Scott.
