Barr says Trump's conduct is a 'betrayal' of the presidency
The Associated Press
Thu, January 7, 2021, 10:00 AM CST·1 min read
Former Attorney General William Barr says President Donald Trump’s conduct as a violent mob of his supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol was a “betrayal of his office and supporters.”

Barr said Thursday that “orchestrating a mob to pressure Congress is inexcusable” in a statement obtained by NBC News. The Associated Press was the first to report Barr's remarks.

Barr was one of Trump’s most loyal and ardent defenders in the Cabinet.

Pelosi Says House Prepared to Impeach Trump Again: Live Updates
By Intelligencer Staff

At the end. Photo: Samuel Corum/Getty Images
The United States slipped deeper into a political crisis on Thursday, after a mob of insurrectionists incited by Donald Trump attacked the Capitol and disrupted a joint session of Congress to confirm Joe Biden’s election as president. Members of Congress from both parties have since called for Trump’s removal from office and members of his administration have resigned in protest, including a cabinet secretary. They were joined in condemnations of the president’s conduct from former members of his administration. Below, updates on the volatile situation and how it has played out.

Updates appear in reverse chronological order.

House prepared to begin impeachment
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called on Vice President Pence and the Trump cabinet to remove the president from office via the emergency provisions of the 25th amendment. If that doesn’t happen quickly, she said, the House would begin impeachment proceedings. She indicated there is overwhelming support for that step in her caucus. But she brushed off questions about the exact timing and whether there is enough time for impeachment and removal in the 13 days remaining before the Biden inauguration.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao to resign
As New York’s Benjamin Hart notes, there is a ”growing list of staffers who are considering abandoning ship,” but this is by far the biggest Trump administration departure so far.

First GOP House member calls for removing Trump via 25th Amendment
Representative Adam Kinzinger of Illinois called for Trump’s removal in a video posted to Twitter on Thursday morning. “It’s time to invoke the 25th Amendment and to end this nightmare,” said Kinzinger, who has occasionally criticized the president in the past and was among the minority of House Republicans who voted to certify Biden’s win last night.

White House withdraws Chad Wolf nomination after he calls on Trump to condemn riot
On Thursday morning, acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement calling on Trump to speak out against yesterday’s violence in the Capitol.

“These violent actions are unconscionable, and I implore the President and all elected officials to strongly condemn the violence that took place yesterday,” Wolf said. “DHS takes the safety and security of all Americans very seriously — it’s at the core of our mission to defend our homeland. Any appearance of inciting violence by an elected official goes against who we are as Americans.”

Less than two hours later, the White House announced that it was withdrawing Wolf’s nomination to lead the department in a permanent capacity, per The Hill. White House spokesman Judd Deere claimed in a statement that the withdrawal actually happened on Wednesday and “was not related at all to Wednesday’s events or the Acting Secretary’s comments this morning.”

Wolf is currently on an official trip to the Middle East and intends to keep serving until Biden is inaugurated.

Former Speaker John Boehner says his party must “awaken”
But he doesn’t name the Republicans who “incited” yesterday’s mob with their “lies.”

Scott, Luria join McEachin and other lawmakers in calling for Trump's removal
Lawmakers in both parties have engaged in discussions on removing President Trump from power after the insurrection in the Capitol by his supporters.

WASHINGTON — Two more members of Congress from Hampton Roads are calling for the removal of President Donald Trump after Wednesday's insurrection in the Capitol by his supporters.

3rd District Representative Bobby Scott and 2nd District Representative Elaine Luria both say Trump needs to leave office immediately.

"While there are only 13 days until President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office, it is clear there are significant risks to our nation if President Trump remains in office," Scott said in a statement Thursday. "Vice President Pence and a majority of the Cabinet must immediately invoke the 25th Amendment. If they fail to exercise their authority under the 25th amendment, the House of Representatives must reconvene and begin impeachment proceedings."

In a Tweet Thursday evening, Luria said, "President Trump’s incitement of violence and a terrorist attack on the US Capitol are the final straw - he must be removed from office immediately and by whatever legal means possible."

Earlier in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that if he wasn’t removed, the House may move forward with a second impeachment.

The lawmakers and administration officials are discussing the efforts even though Trump has less than two weeks in office. The talks began Wednesday afternoon as Trump first refused to forcefully condemn the violence and then excused the assault on the Capitol.

Senior Trump administration officials are said to be discussing the 25th Amendment, which allows for the forceful removal of Trump from power by his own Cabinet.

Scott and Luria are not the only members of the Hampton Roads Congressional delegation to call on Trump's removal. 4th District Rep. Don McEachin on Wednesday also said Trump should be removed by either the 25th Amendment or impeachment.

Hampton Roads' lone Republican Congressman, 1st District Rep. Rob Wittman, has not called for Trump's immediate removal, but said in a statement, "Now is the time to move forward as one nation. By count of the electoral college, Joe Biden becomes President-Elect and Kamala Harris becomes Vice President-Elect. The peaceful transition of power will occur, just as it has every four years since 1792."

Rudy Giuliani accidentally leaves voicemail for wrong senator while trying to slow vote certification
Patrick Gomez
Wed, January 6, 2021, 10:26 PM CST·2 min read
Rudy Giuliani
Rudy Giuliani
Even after a mob takeover of the United States Capitol by Donald Trump supporter extremists, Rudy Giuliani is still trying to subvert the will of the people. While members of Congress remained barricaded in their offices or in undisclosed locations underneath the Capitol, Donald Trump’s lawyer was calling senators and begging them to slow down the electoral vote certification. One of the senators Giuliani was hoping to get in on the scheme was the newly sworn-in Republican Senator from Alabama, Tommy Tuberville. But there was a problem. Giuliani didn’t call Tuberville. He accidentally left a voicemail for another senator, a senator who is remaining anonymous but took it upon themselves to send the audio of the call to The Dispatch.

Here’s what Giuliani had to say. Sorry I called a wrong number.

US stocks again head for record highs after Trump concedes defeat and investors position for more stimulus
Harry Robertson
Jan. 8, 2021, 10:51 AM
President Donald Trump conceded defeat and promised an orderly transition in a video posted on social media on Thursday night.

US stocks on Friday were set to reach record highs yet again as futures prices rose following President Donald Trump's acknowledgment that Joe Biden would become president in less than two weeks.
Democrats have pledged to launch more economic coronavirus relief, sending stocks across the board higher in a broad-based rally.
The yields on longer-dated US Treasurys continued to rise as the market anticipated higher issuance and stronger growth and inflation.
Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.
US stocks were set to continue their remarkable rally at the opening bell Friday, as indicated by futures prices, after President Donald Trump conceded defeat in the 2020 election and as investors positioned for more economic relief from President-elect Joe Biden and a Democratic-controlled Congress.
Traders continued to sell government bonds and move into stocks, pushing shares higher in Asia but gold lower. Chinese shares ended a six-day winning streak amid fresh tensions with the US, however.
Investors have piled into stocks in recent days with the vaccine rollout expanding and with Democrats taking control of the US Senate via two runoff victories in Georgia.
Even unprecedented scenes of pro-Trump rioters storming the US Capitol could not deter the rally, which has sent the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the Nasdaq, and the Russell 2000 indexes to all-time highs.

S&P 500 futures were up 0.22% on Friday, while Dow futures were 0.23% higher and Nasdaq futures had gained 0.32%.

"So much for a slow start to the new year," said Han Tan, a market analyst at the trading platform FXTM.
"From a pair of tense Senate runoffs, to a mob breaching Capitol Hill and even a shock oil supply cut from Saudi Arabia, global investors have had plenty to take in this week. Yet, the buying momentum in stocks has continued unabated."
The major factor driving stocks upward has been the Democratic sweep of the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives. But Trump's concession and promise of a "smooth, orderly, and seamless transition of power" in a video Thursday night have also calmed nerves.

Biden and his Democratic allies in Congress plan to launch a bigger round of economic coronavirus relief and also focus on infrastructure and low-carbon initiatives over the longer term. As part of the stimulus, the president-elect pledged during the Georgia runoff campaigns to get $2,000 direct payments to Americans "out the door immediately" should the two Democrats win their runoffs.
The rally in US stocks has been broad-based. Climate-friendly companies have profited. Tesla, for example, soared 7.94% on Thursday, making Elon Musk the world's richest person. But industrials and other value stocks are up too.
The promise of more stimulus in the world's biggest economy has also lifted markets around the world. Shares in Asia have rallied sharply, with Japan's Nikkei 225 jumping a further 2.36% overnight and Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbing 1.2%.
China's CSI 300 slipped 0.33%, however, after a six-day rally. The Trump administration in its final days has attempted a new crackdown on Chinese companies, raising tensions.
Shares opened higher in Europe on Friday, with the continent-wide Stoxx 600 climbing 0.65%. The FTSE 100 rose 0.13%, putting it on track for a one-week rise of about 7%, its biggest one-week rally in two months.

US Treasury yields continued to rise as investors sold the safe-haven assets in favor of equities.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to price, climbed 1.2 basis points to 1.083% as investors anticipated higher issuance from the government as well as growth and inflation. The 30-year yield rose 0.8 basis points to 1.853%.

Rising yields hit gold as investors turned toward assets with a yield. The spot gold price was down 1.2% to about $1,889 an ounce on Thursday morning. Gold has lost almost $100 since hitting two-month highs on Wednesday.
"Gold is very sensitive to the US 10-year yield," said Jeffrey Halley, a senior market analyst at the currency firm Oanda. "If the 10-year yield keeps rising, gold could seriously threaten support. That could lead to a much deeper capitulation correction."

But the startling rally in Bitcoin showed no signs of slowing, with the cryptocurrency powering past the $40,000 mark on Thursday. It then slipped back slightly and was last at about $38,487.
"The cryptocurrency achieved a major milestone and crossed the $40,000 level, which has made the $50,000 price as real as it can be," said Naeem Aslam, the chief market analyst at AvaTrade.
"After recording another all-time high, we see profit-taking among many investors as they know that bitcoin is a kind of beast that can easily move 10% in a day in any direction."

Economy lost 140,000 jobs last month, in final report of Trump presidency
The final jobs report of 2020 shows a labor market teetering on the brink, as the pandemic’s chokehold on the economy strengthens.

The economy shed 140,000 jobs in December, a clear indication that the pandemic’s chokehold on economic activity strengthened in the final weeks of last year.

The unemployment rate held steady at 6.7 percent.

In the final jobs report of 2020, Friday’s monthly employment snapshot from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a labor market teetering on the brink at the end of a tumultuous year.

“The December employment report paints a wintry picture for the U.S. economy, including the first decline in hiring since last spring," said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate. "Between the human and economic tolls taken by the pandemic, these are some of the darkest hours of this soon-to-be yearlong tragedy.”

Economists say the numbers lay bare the struggles facing American workers, and represent a mandate for President-elect Joe Biden's administration to accomplish two things: Address the immediate financial needs of these households, and develop a longer-term solution that fosters job growth and protects the workers most vulnerable to disenfranchisement.

“It’s eerily reminiscent of when Joe Biden took office as vice president facing a significant jobs challenge,” said Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation. “I think they're going to have a lot of urgency to do something early on.”

"These are some of the darkest hours of this soon-to-be yearlong tragedy.”

The government data comes just two days after a report by payroll processor ADP found that the private sector lost 123,000 jobs in December, the first decline since April.

Opinion | Trump lost the presidency. The Capitol riot proves he gained a far-right army.
A report from executive outplacement and coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas found that planned job cuts rose nearly 20 percent in December on a monthly basis. The roughly 77,000 jobs companies announced plans to shed is 135 percent higher than a year ago.

Economists had predicted that worsening Covid-19 infection rates in the winter months could damage economic recovery, even as the promise of a vaccine has spurred hope on Wall Street and propelled the stock market to record highs. President Donald Trump has treated the stock market as a barometer of his term and a proxy for success. Observers predict that Biden will view the nation’s economic health through a markedly different lens.

“I think the Biden administration will prioritize the labor market and I think they have a partner in Congress now that has the same priority,” Stettner said.

A Democratic White House and Congress makes the prospect of more generous stimulus legislation all but certain. Even after the stimulus package the lame-duck Congress completed at the end of the year, there is still broad agreement on the need for further fiscal support, said Mark Hamrick, senior economic analyst at Bankrate.

“The prescription has been fairly consistently enunciated from the business community, as well as our central bankers, because they understand there’s only so much of a fulcrum they can lean on with monetary policy,” Hamrick said.

One obvious entry point with the potential to draw bipartisan support is infrastructure investment, since years of kicking the can down the road have left roads, railways and bridges around the nation in need of repair. “Ironically, that was the promise President Trump came to Washington on,” Hamrick said.

Stettner said the administration will need to address the significant racial and gender disparities in the labor market’s halting recovery. “As things began to open up, it really was white workers who were able to get back to work at a faster clip,” he said.

The ADP report showed that contraction in leisure and hospitality businesses dominated December’s slide, accounting for roughly half of the job losses for the month. This has a disproportionate impact on Americans who are already among the most marginalized populations, Stettner said. “The service sector where women of color get most of their work has been most affected,” he said. A lack of child care, he added, has driven women out of the workforce more broadly, as they take on the bulk of that additional, unpaid labor.

The specific nature of the pandemic’s labor market distortions obscures the picture of exactly how dire circumstances have become in those sectors, said Ludovic Subran, chief economist at Allianz SE.

“The issue is it really hides the drop in active populations of people [who] have stopped looking for a job, because they know in their sector there might not be any jobs,” he said. While the BLS data does include alternate measures of under- and unemployment, Subran said these metrics fail to capture the extent to which the pandemic has annihilated entire industries.

He urged the Biden administration to consider “opening the box” and exploring direct, robust labor market interventions such as federal training and reskilling initiatives that have been deployed in Europe but never caught on amidst the fraying of America’s social safety net.

“You need to bring some of the people that used to work in the service industry into other sectors,” Subran said. “I would advocate for a Democratic administration to really go ‘Marshall Plan’ on learning, upskilling, intermediation, requalification,” he said.

US Capitol riot: Police officer dies amid pressure on Trump over inciting violence
08 January 2021 US & Canada

Video captionTrump calls for an 'orderly transition of power' to Biden administration on January 20th.
A US Capitol police officer has died from injuries sustained in the attack on Congress by a pro-Trump mob as top Democrats have called for the president to be removed for "inciting" the riot.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged Vice-President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th amendment to the Constitution to declare the president unfit for office.

Alternatively, she vowed to initiate the process to impeach the president.

Under pressure, Donald Trump finally condemned the "heinous attack".

Wednesday's violence came hours after Mr Trump encouraged his supporters to fight against the election results as Congress was certifying President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the November vote.

Five people have died in relation to the riot, including Brian Sicknick, an officer at the US Capitol Police (USCP) who was "injured while physically engaging with protesters", the police said.

Meanwhile, the top congressional Democrats - Speaker Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer - have urged Vice-President Pence and Mr Trump's cabinet to remove the president for "his incitement of insurrection".

"The President's dangerous and seditious acts necessitate his immediate removal from office," they said in a joint statement.

The duo called for Mr Trump to be ousted using the 25th Amendment , which allows the vice-president to step up if the president is unable to perform his duties owing to a mental or physical illness.

But it would require Mr Pence and at least eight cabinet members to break with Mr Trump and invoke the amendment, something they have so far seemed unlikely to do. Mr Trump is due to leave office on 20 January, when Mr Biden will be sworn in.

Mrs Pelosi indicated that if the vice-president failed to act, she would convene the House to launch their second impeachment proceedings against Mr Trump.

However, to succeed in convicting and removing the president, Democrats would need a two-thirds majority in the Senate, and there is no indication they would get those numbers. And it was not clear whether enough time remained to carry out the process.

Mrs Pelosi's deputy, Katherine Clark, told CNN the House could move on impeachment next week.

Media reports, quoting unnamed sources, said Mr Trump had suggested to aides he was considering granting a pardon to himself in the final days of his presidency. The legality of such a move is untested.

Analysis box by Anthony Zurcher, North America reporter
It wasn't until Thursday night, more than 24 hours after the US Capitol had been ransacked by his supporters, that Donald Trump released a recorded statement calling for "healing and reconciliation" in a wounded nation.

That was the very least that could be expected from a US president in a time of crises, and it probably will not be enough to silence calls for his removal, impeachment or resignation. Those demands have been coming from the political left, of course, but also from parts of the right - longtime critics, from former allies and, remarkably, even the conservative editorial page of Rupert Murdoch's Wall Street Journal.

Ever since November's election, when Trump chose to attack the results rather than admit defeat, a reckoning was coming. The pressure, like a malfunctioning steam engine, was building toward a catastrophic ending.

On Thursday night, the president began trying to pick up the pieces.

Teleprompter Trump had spoken. In past crises, unscripted Trump has quickly returned, with words and actions that reveal his earlier comments were insincere.

With 12 days left in his presidency, the question is whether, or more likely when, that Trump will return - and what happens when he does.

Russian Media Wants Moscow to Grant Asylum to Trump
ASYLUM FOR TRUMPUSHA

Russian state media—a reliable barometer of the mood at the Kremlin—remains fixated on election-related events in America. Affectionately referring to Donald Trump as “our Donald,” “Trumpusha” and “Comrade Trump,” Russian lawmakers, experts and pundits repeatedly have expressed their concerns about the future of Moscow’s all-time favorite U.S. president.

Co-host of Russian state TV news talk show 60 Minutes Olga Skabeeva brought up the possibility that President Trump would end up seeking asylum in Russia to escape any prosecutions in the United States following the conclusion of his sole presidential term. Skabeeva emphasized that this was by no means a joking matter: “It’s all very serious,” she said, as she pondered out loud about the nature of criminal charges Trump might soon be facing.

Experts in the studio enthusiastically discussed the likelihood of Trump being charged with a bevy of offenses from tax evasion to fraud and sexual assault. They concurred that Trump’s presidential pardon would not help him in state cases, unlike the recently advanced constitutional amendment in Russia that secured lifetime immunity from criminal prosecution for the country’s former presidents. Russian President Vladimir Putin can relate to Trump on a very personal level—not only where it comes to a ruthless pursuit of power, but also with respect to the intense fear of accountability if that power was to ever slip away. While Putin’s grip on Russia is feverishly safeguarded, Trump’s fate is far from certain.

Russian State Media Mulls How to Milk Trump Before He’s Gone
MOO
Julia Davis

The rabidly anti-American military expert and member of the Russian Defense Ministry's Public Council, Igor Korotchenko, spoke out in Trump’s defense with a passion that is drastically different from the combative rhetoric that traditionally accompanied his commentary about any other Western heads of state. Korotchenko angrily—not to mention ludicrously—compared “poor Trump’s” anticipated legal troubles to the Stalinist repressions of 1937. He argued: “Russia can offer political asylum to the persecuted former president of the United States, Donald Trump. But let him not simply arrive to Rostov or elsewhere, but also transfer his capital here and finally build his famous Trump City somewhere in our New Moscow.”

State-controlled RIA Novosti opined that the looming threat of criminal prosecutions is the Democratic Party’s way of “spitting at Trump on his way out.” Staunch Kremlin propagandist Dmitry Kiselyov’s Sunday show Weekly News argued that for Trump, pardoning himself is a matter of survival.

Full-throated support of the Kremlin-controlled state media is at odds with Trump’s repeated mantra of being “tough on Russia.” To the contrary, in the land of Putin, there is a gnawing fear that things will get tough for Russia without Trump at the helm. Putin’s refusal to congratulate President-elect Joe Biden is echoed by Russian lawmakers on state TV shows. They believe that Trump will continue to unleash dirty tricks out of the Pandora’s box of his shameless determination to stay in office even after being voted out.

“Let him not simply arrive to Rostov or elsewhere, but also transfer his capital here and finally build his famous Trump City somewhere in our New Moscow.”
Notorious politician Vladimir Zhirinovsky, who previously suggested that Putin should milk Trump like a cow before he is forced to leave office, enumerated actions he hoped Trump would undertake prior to his departure: recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea, leave NATO, withdraw U.S. troops from every place they’re stationed worldwide, arrest disloyal U.S. state governors, refuse to recognize the outcome of the elections, force all states to conduct mandatory recounts, and induce Attorney General Bill Barr to pursue any actions that would benefit Trump.

“Trump is your creation,” grimly noted the host of 60 Minutes, Evgeny Popov, referring to Zhirinovsky’s champagne-soaked celebration of Trump’s 2016 election victory in Russia’s parliament. In response, Zhirinovsky argued that the current U.S. president was still capable of pulling off a fast one and staying in the office against all odds: “You don’t know Trump, he has plenty of tricks up his sleeve and can still cause lots of damage to America and the entire world.”

Zhirinovsky’s stance appears to be in perfect alignment with Putin’s deliberate delay in recognizing or congratulating the incoming Biden administration, since doing so might undermine the likelihood of extracting some last-minute favors from President Trump. “There is no need to rush,” Zhirinovsky argued, “the 20th of January isn’t here yet.”

Russian Media Is Angry and Desperate Over Biden Win
NO PUPPET
Julia Davis

The Kremlin is in no hurry to congratulate Joe Biden with his return to the White House as president. Appearing on Russia’s state TV show The Evening with Vladimir Soloviev, the deputy dean of World Politics at Moscow State University, Andrey Sidorov, predicted that the Biden presidency would spell out the consolidation of the entire Western world against Russia. Experts and lawmakers in Russian state media concurred that Moscow should anticipate additional sanctions in the near future.

“Biden is telling us that America is back. What does that mean for us?” asked 60 Minutes host Evgeny Popov, noting Russia’s inability to adequately retaliate against U.S. sanctions. Deputy Speaker of the Russian State Duma (lower chamber of parliament) Pyotr Tolstoy responded with an ominous threat: “We’re going to use their computers to make sure that people like Biden and his entire team will never again imagine that they have the right to world domination. We will unquestionably demonstrate it to them in years to come. Just wait and see.”

On Nov. 8, 2016, Donald J. Trump made his children the future of the Republican Party. On Jan. 6, 2020, he took it away. As someone who has suckled at the teat of nepotism, I can attest that you’re only as famous or as popular as the parent who made you relevant in the first place. On Jan. 6, 2021 Trump went from “annoying but useful to the Republican Party” to “the thing that the Republican Party finally realizes is going to kill it.”

Sure, many of us knew Trump would kill the Republican Party like five years ago. But Republicans didn’t seem to think he could, but he did.
