I took Merle, Blueduck, and Janey last night to Gumswamp. I sent Blueduck and Janey up an old logging road toward Wall Bayou. Blueduck struck a redhot track 75 yards down the road and left out pushing it hard to the north. Janey was opening really good on the track also. The track broke down about 200 yards in. Blueduck located a time or two then lined it out and the race was on again. He treed 300 yards farther north, so I drove around to get closer. I found him on the same Hickory tree in a Pine thicket, Merle had treed on a month and half ago. But this time I saw him. I sure was hoping to hear Janey treeing, but she never did. I then rode around to fill a feeder next to the beaver pond to get these pups started. I cut Merle loose on the south end of the pond, and off he went. Merle struck at 500 yards and headed east. He opened 2 or 3 time on the track, covering another 300 yards east then treed. I found him on a big Pin Oak, and didn't take long to see eyes. I let Merle have this one, then headed home. Ole Merle is going hunting now, but just don't open much on a track alone. If he is with other dogs, he will open good. Tonight he opened more than he has in the pass. Hoping for more.

Louisa,
I know of a couple young dogs, but I also know they are not puppy trainers. If you want a very lightly started dog, these would be good for that.

Snake bitten

Rhett and I made a round to Gumswamp Saturday night. We had Blueduck, Merle, Clara, and Deets. Last hunt I filled three feeders to start working with these Case X Clara pups. Deets has more drive than I have ever seen in a puppy. When he hits the ground, he is all business, and don’t care what is happening around him. All he has on his mind is coons, and to see and HEAR him work a track is unbelievable. We turned him out on a feeder at the beaver pond. The tire was covered with mud and water, so we sat back waiting for what was sure to come. After he got lined out on the track, off he went. We were hoping for an easy coon, but that wasn’t the case. At 350, we rode around to get closer, at 550 from there, Rhett decided he may need to follow in behind him. Before Rhett left he send Clara in toward him, but she headed north and treed at 350 yards on Edwards’ Bayou. I headed to Clara and Rhett went to Deets. After I got Clara, and had started back to the Ranger, I heard Rhett hollow for me, so I hollowed back. According to the Garmin, I was 400 yards northwest of Deets, so I turned and headed that way. When Rhett caught up with me, he was packing Deets. Ole Deets had been snake bite and was one sick puppy. From the fang marks, it appears to have been a big one. In one of the pictures below, you can see the fang marks where it had already started to drain.

Snakes

Hate to hear that about Deets. He sounds like he's going to be another fine one out of Case. Mason and I were trimming some shooting lanes Saturday around one of my Deer Stands and I liked to stepped on a Big Cottonmouth coiled up in some tall grass sunning. I was carrying Mason hunting that night but after seeing the Snake I told him it needed to get colder before he went. They are really moving and aggressive right now. Hope Deets recovers quick for you and you can get him back after those coon. Take Care and Good Hunting!

Janey's first tree (Case X Clara)

This is why I love working with puppies. Last night I turned Janey out on a feeder. She acted like she smelt something, but couldn’t do anything with it. I guss the coon hadn't been there yet. After 15 minutes, of her just messing around, I took Blueduck out and sent him on down the logging road. He struck a track at 250 yards and treed within a minute. Just as I got to the tree, Janey crawled up on the side of it and started treeing. I videoed her then backed up to shine. Took me a while to find the coon, because he wouldn’t look, but I found him lying flat out on a limb. I sure wanted to let her have this one but I didn’t bring my rifle. I grabbed Blueduck and headed to the Ranger, calling Janey. But had to turn around and go back to pull her off the tree. I just love to see the progress of a puppy, and a young dog for that matter. Don’t get me wrong I enjoy the consistence of a seasoned dog, but these young ones get my blood pumping.

Thursday night I took a couple of fellows from work that has never been coonhunting before. I had told them, that everybody needs to experience, the locate of a coonhound on a still night, and feel the energy of being around the tree with them blowing the top out, at less once in their lives. We made two trees and looked at one coon. One of the fellows wanted that coon bad, but I didn’t bring the rifle, so we left it to run again. They couldn’t get over how loud the dogs are when you are under the tree lol. Below is another picture of Janey on the tree.

Thanks Mr. Jack, I hope she make the type of dog I like. Looking good so far.

Rhett and I have been busy building him a new dog box. He wants to start a small sideline business, to make a little hunting money. This is our first one, and he Rhett is an outstanding welder, and I,m doing the fitting, and not to bad I must say for a washed up electrician. I'll post more pictures as it progresses.

We are doing great, thanks Eddie. Hope all is well with you and your family.
He is a hard worker. But it's a job try to get him started because he always has too many irons in the fire. I hoping see you soon at the Winter Classic, if Rhett will get that ole pot licker ready.

10/28/16

Donald and I took Blueduck, Merle, and Casey (CaseXClara) Friday night. On the way to the first spot that we were going to turn out on, a coon crossed the road headed into a Pine thick. We knew it could be a long race and turn out bad if they treed in there, but with it being 59 degs, we cut them loose. Blueduck and Merle left there rolling him hard. Casey tried to keep up, but fall behind in the thick stuff. They made a big round through the Pines then headed back west, and crossed the road into another Pine thicket. They pushed him through that thicket and into the hard woods, then treed. It took us a little while to get Casey back, and by the time we got to the tree, Blueduck and Merle were just about complete burnt out. So we didn’t spent too much time looking for the coon (No coon seen). No water in the woods at all. We gave them water and let them cool down, before moving on to the next spot. I cut Blueduck out in one of my favorite spots only to have him strike a really cold track that he could do anything with, so I called him on out. Next I sent Merle down a ditch that normal has water, but not this time. He hit another bad track and bogged down in a cutover, which I had to go into to get him. We decided to turn Blueduck out one more time. He struck a pretty good track at about 175 yard, at about 250 he treed. We walked in to him and found the coon pretty fast. We walked back to the Ranger and called it a night.

Casey's first coon.

Donald took Casey (CaseXClara) out last night and she treed her first coon, alone. Below is a picture and video of her treeing.

I'm having troulbe with photobucket posting the video. I'll post as soon as it uploads.
