Is anyone other than me think the hunting is rough? Only seen 2 coon setting up and have not seen any to speak of on the roads. Young dog seems that not many good tracks

I wonder what causes it? I mentioned to my grandson while hunting the other night that I wish I had kept data for weather conditions and see how they related to coon moving? It is my grandsons second season and he noticed the lack of wildlife moving.

We had a disease in our overpopulated raccoons. Started summer of 2023 and lasted till midwinter 2024. Very few road kills compared to 2022 and before. I was taking 60 plus a season within a mile of my house. I don't hunt hard or long hours. Couple times a week 2 or 3 hours a night.

This year dogs have treed 4. All have been small kittens. I harvested 1, left the rest to tree again. Just wanted show you what over population and a disease will do. They are out there just few and far between.

We also lost our overpopulated deer to disease this past summer.

Cheyenne, I was in your back yard Fri night at the Marsh and treed 3 coon a den and a slick. Only ran one track which was in the thick over cut stuff. The rest of the trees were layups. Pretty much the same deal Sat. Wed night I figured they would move before the front came in, never made a ground bark just made Den trees. Never saw a thing on the road to or from. Since Aug its been there either running every where and you can tree 5 or 6 without trying or there just sitting up in the dens and oaks and you need a dog that can tree layups . There are more coon now then i have seen in the last 10 or 15 yrs. We saw 18 coon in 11 trees made this fall one night. 9 of the 11 trees had coon in them the other 2 were i think honest dens. This was just a few miles from your house. Every coon I have knocked down is healthy as can be and big. I'm just hunting one dog.

Perry, I have kept a spread sheet with the Temp, wind, and humidity for about two yrs now. I haven't had a chance to sit down yet and look for a pattern. I did notice this summer that the coon always seemed to move when the pressure was at 29.1 to 29.9. So I started writing that down as well. I just keep a little memo pad in my vest and after I cut the dog go to the weather app and write down everything with the time in and time out every drop, as well as every tree made. I really liked the ODNR ohio hunt and fish app but it don't work for the weather half the time.

I am interested in what you might learn from your data. I figure moon phase probably affects wildlife movement as well. This has been an odd long stretch. Hunted 2 woods Sunday night (7:30). First woods never a bark. Not a single eye of any type. Moved about a mile. (9:10)Ran 1 track and treed 1. Saw several deers and another coon sitting up. Saw a couple coons on way to house. I am sure there is a pattern I am just too lazy to track it. I might take a look at the app you spoke of. If it is that easy I may just pick up a pocket note pad and start my own data trail.

Perry, not sure on the phases of the moon, but I did debunk the whole coon don't move on a bright or full moon. The thing is they just don't look when it is bright out, and they are really fast to spook and take off at every little noise. I did a study in my own back yard for 3 summers. about 3 months each year. I was able to sit and watch the coon at feeders from 5 feet away. Plus at least 10 years of trail cam pic's and video's from all year at this feeder. Now with a thermal in the summer I was able to find the coon that wouldn't look on those moon lit nights. The funny thing is once you see were the heat spot is more often than not I was able to find the coon I couldn't see before with the naked eye. I don't count it as a coon unless I can see it without the thermal. That app you can find the link if you google Hunt and Fish Ohio I think. ODNR sent it to me in an email. It is the only app I have, i'm not real into tech. But you can check all your lic. and hunt dates in the app. It's nice cause you always have your phone on you so if you get checked in the woods you can pull out the phone and log in it's all right there.

Cheyenne, the coon seem to be moving the best on avg from 10 to 1am and 4 to 6am. Make sure your not cutting lose at each woods at the same time all the time you might change your luck. I run into that a lot since I hunt 4 nights a week. I run into woods that just dry up on me. So I will pop in at a really odd time and it makes all the difference and the woods is on fire. I do my best to keep recasting my dog so he's not just popping up easy coon all night, but I would rather there be some tracks there too, so he stays in the same county for 2 hrs of recasting.

Maybe hunting was just off for so many people recently, diseases, weird weather, or bad timing? Though mixed up hours and spots, some folks still get coon. The problem with it is if you’re hitting the same woods at the same time, it’s not working. Those looking to track the weather or moon phases may have a better shot.

I cut loose at 7:30 already frost on, put one in a log, made an oak slick and treed 2, all recast. I only hunted an hour last night but what little I was out the critters seemed to be stirring. I figure they will shut down come fri with the bad cold snap coming. With as nice as it's been all fall they really don't have a reason run. Which is pretty good timing to let the woods sit for the cranky deer hunters and there orange army that will be every where next week.

As suspected not much moved this past weekend, in fact never had a true track to speak of just a few short den tracks. Only coon seen were layups. I'm hunting a very young dog that spent way too much time on the ground before he would grab a den. He will hunt the woods you cut him in and not blow out. So he would make 2 passes through the woods before he would just pull up on a den if nothing was down or sitting out. Ended up treeing during a white out that pop up thurs night. That was the best track of the weekend back to a den. I hunted early every night this week with the temps being down.

The biggest thing is that until this past week, it has been bone dry here. Drought conditions.

Lots of small streams dried up.

Yes, no water in any of the swamps still here. I hunt state ground when they open in sept, most of them here in OH are marsh land. This is the driest I have every seen them. It changed the way we run tracks there for sure. This fall was a dust bowl and when they were taking crops off it was a nightmare. The dust hung in the air like fog for days at a time. I went out on night after one of the few rains we got after a 6 week stretch of not a drop of rain. The coon were moving like crazy and the dog went to slick treeing like mad there was so much sent. Before that tracks were long and tuff but he was good about having it. It was an interesting year for sure, and were still 9 inches below for rain fall for the year.

There, are not very many around here, you can not kill them in march, april, and may, and expect to see them in november, it don't happen. If people don't start takeing care of the coon, there will be less.
