Junky Dogs

Is it the Garmins, the way they are bred now or what? Not to long ago, most everyone had some problems with young dogs messing with some sort of junk. Seems as of now, you hardly ever hear of it anymore.

Andy you already know the answer to that. Breed enough tree in them and they don't have time to run junk! lol
Hope you and your family had a great Thanksgiving. Give'em all a big hug and howdy from me.

When you put tree in, you take track out.

Some folks don't know when their dogs are running junk till they catch it !! Some folks don't know when their dogs are running haints either but that's ok for 100 strike anyways.

I actually miss some of the junk running . I haven’t had one that was wild in about 9 years. It kept things interesting I liked that about a pup. You may turn it loose and it tree a coon then run him some sort of gadget for awhile. That’s actually what I liked about a pup. The past few I’ve had didn’t have enough motor for me or heart for that matter. I’m not saying they had to be junky to make a good one.

I think that Garmins have had a lot to do with it. Back before Garmins we used to spend half of the night listening to and rounding up deer runners. And with all of the new roads and subdivisions, they can't hardly get away from you now.

Super gamey pups that run deer will ruin a hunting trip...also a setback for pups...

Years ago I learned to show the pups what game I wanted and then I broke them off of deer in my back yard before ever hunting them in the woods...it sure made hunting a lot more pleasant

Out of the last 10 or 12 pups I've started or tried to start, none of them required trash breaking of any kind. But most of them never made a coondog either.

Back in my Dad's day, they were all trashy. The question then was if you could ever really get them broke.

I think the typical pup today, at least amongst the Walkers, is far less "gamey" than the pups from the 60's and 70's. And that's not all good.

Forgive me if I stray a bit from the original topic but I know there are breed lines out there today that produce high levels of drive and desire in their pups. I know this because I read it in so many stud dog and puppy ads. So it has to be true, right? But I seldom hunt with anything but pups from about everything out there and I swear, I read about all that drive and desire a whole more than I see it.
Prolly just looking in the wrong places.......

Jim I can show you some that run a coon like a deer ! And when they run a deer he ain't got time to circle. Now that I got an alpha I like a deer race when they are young but that's just me lol.

I've had only one deer race in the last 12 1/2 years and that's starting 5 dogs. Only treed one possum in 6 years starting three dogs. All would tree a coon before 9 months

We've had the same problem with dogs coming here from the south, they fold up when the winter tracking gets rough and won't even hunt

Two things the south has contributed to the coonhound world, heartworms and dogs that run under the truck when they see snow.

Tar. Are dogs are forced to run them old nasty tracks. They don't have miles and miles of timber to straight line looking for a hot one

Jim

You didn't have to be so honest, did you? Heartworm and an aversion to snow, well 1 out of 2 is not too bad, nothing likes snow. Lol. Dave

20 below and the ice on these swamps won't hold you up. Never understood that. Must something to do with the quicksand underneath.

There is still a junky line left. It’s dominated the $$$ hunts for the last 10-15 years. The public is to impatient to start with a running dog that will tree. Almost every line of hounds are the same now. Easy to start. Easy to break. Have to stay on them all the time and hunt them regular to keep them accurate.

Jim I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks that way. I’ll take a gamey pup any day of the week versus one that’s not.

Fast game the Garmin has helped with but there are far less people being honest about why there dog is treeing slick. I can't help but think how much better a lot of dogs would be if they weren't trashing near as often as they are.
Honestly in my area a large amount of the dogs that tree slick are treeing squirrels and if they like them I find it near impossible to break them. Most will not agree but that doesn't solve the problem as a matter a fact some train them as youngsters on squirrel but wouldn't think of training them on possums. Does that make sense?

😂, I got one of them. Big Name Semen dog, snatch you down out of box like he's gonna leave the world when you unsnap him, makes a 20 yard loop and jumps up in truck. He's from out there, though.
