Rules ?

Cast turns loose, after the minute one dog opens three times and is struck, shuts up. Cast advances up on a ridge 100 yards or so and 8 minute rule applied. About 4 or 5 minutes in handler of dog says she is a thousand yards we need to tighten up so I can hear my dog. Do you advance or stay out and finish running 8 where you are?

Why would it be minused for babbling if it wasn't struck in under the minute and it opened and then got gone?

No? Unless I'm not understanding what he said the dog did? If a dog leaves you not barking and then the minute is up and your dog opens three times and then it is 1000 yards away in 4 or 5 minutes, You would have a hard time getting a cast to vote to minus a dog for babbling?

dog struck where no track was evident, that is the rule minute or not! 1000 yards the dog babbled, period. Take your minus like a man.

This is another one of those judgement calls on what you think the dog is doing. I wouldn't minus one that struck and then the next time they heard them they were that far away. I don't have to worry to often about the 8 with mine anyway. I was just trying to see your logic. Everyone has their own thoughts.

for one u can not minus a dog for babbling if struck after the minute. on or before the third bark he has to be struck after the minute. an then the eight is applied. their is no rule that says where that dog has to open during the eight minutes as long as it opens to break the eight. that is not a judgment call unless the dog is struck in under the minute

I didn't do a good job of explaining what my ? Was, while running 8, handler is watching his Garmin and says my dog is a 1000 yards that way, we need to walk so I can hear her. I didn't think you can use your Garmin to help score a dog.

no you messed up by starting the 8 and not misusing the dog. Once you start the eight I wouldn't have a problem walking a couple hundred yards but that's all. You can't score a dog off the Garmin but walking isn't scoring.

Sorry Snaggles, but you are wrong on this one. The judge can minus a dog for babbling any time it babbles. Before the minute is up or after the minute is up.

Dean, Im taking it that your question is whether the judge should instruct the cast to tighten up on a dog because the Garmin shows it out of hearing. On that, UKC has been very clear time and again. The Garmin has absolutely no bearing on the hunt. You cannot walk to a dog out of hearing because the Garmin says he is that direction.
I would handle it the way we did pre-Garmin, if no other dog was struck, we tighten up the direction the judge believes the dogs went. If other dogs are struck and can be heard, you make every attempt to keep THOSE dogs within hearing. The Garmin cannot effect the hunt.

Yes Jim that was what I was asking, but with people standing around eyes glued to Garmin and no dogs barking everybody wants to walk direction the Garmin is pointing. If he wasn't watching Garmin he wouldn't know if dog was 100 yards or a 1000 yards.

Exactly! All you can do is remind them that the RULES require you to treat the situation as if the Garmin did not exist.
Anytime someone says "But my Garmin shows........', stop them right there and remind them that as the judge, the Garmin cannot influence you.
