Coon Movement

No professional by any means here, Just curiosity here really, been having a usual coon treeing hound pulling up short more than i can stand. Hes 3.5 years old. My question is how is the coon movement this time of year in your area. Rut should be well over i would think. i've heard the sows could be laid up with kittens and not moving? Seems most coon seen are boar coon? Seems all the dogs I see on social media and what not are blowing though the country to tree a coon (boars). Reckon they are moving at different times than when im hunting. Im not a pro handler as i work 42+ hours a week and still try to hunt when i can. I usually try to hunt at least 2 nights a week and on the weekends. Try to cut loose around dark and make a couple trees. Dog is real timid so I try to be cautious when correcting him on a blank. I'm not the kind of guy to beat their brains out but understand they need to be corrected. Just looking for some wisdom from experience. i'm still somewhat of a intermediate when it comes to training, breaking dogs, coon movement, etc. Thanks guys

I had cameras on feeders for a few years and with thousands of pics taken on three different feeders I know one thing! its not easy to pattern when a coon will move.

Thanks for the reply. Not really looking to pattern them just curious to see if the sows are layed up. Are guys seeing a normal amount of coon? Treeing more boars than sows? Am i hunting the wrong times for this time of year?

Your dog pulling up short has absolutely nothing to do with coon movement.

90% of your kittens won't be out and about until June july time frame so I don't think its sow with kittens at least not born kittens yet! And I agree with the to much tree and that the case in most of the dogs today ! There are a lot of dogs that can tree coon and look good doing it when coon are down and moving but not many that can go any night of the week and anytime of the. Night and consistantly come up with coon ! Are you hunting around any water ?which makes track smell better ? IS the dog beating and banging like old tracks and then coming treed and just empty are is the dog blistering smokin a track 3-500 yards and coming treee like its hot and not having the coon ? We don't have any coon and what few we did have I have found 5 dead in the last 3 weeks and can only figure distemper being it has t gotten cold enough this winter to kill off a lot of disease ? Not sure. But finding live coons has been a chore! The last couple I saw were heading out to work at 4:45 am so should say they are moving in the afternoon during daylight hours and early morning before daylight but that can all chage tommorow ! I figured they had my phone tapped and new every move I was making Lol but also do you hunt the same spots As coon will pattern you pretty quick also everything happens for a reason you just need to figure it out or something that makes sense

Corey

I'm north of u just a bit. Tracking conditions are tough this time of year. Especially with the back n forth freezing then then thawing mixed with things starting to decay can make for rough going. Correct him on the slick n send him on. If he comes up slick from there now u have real problem. Just b patient n enjoy the hunt no matter how good or bad. Remember its supposed to b fun.

dont believe everything u hear on hear lol. Never had a world champ but i just send them on with a rougher voice and hopefully he starts finishing tracks. But its the roughest time of year for coon movement. Yes coons are smarter than dogs and they will tap more trees than ever this time of year. Boars smell stronger this time of year and sows hardly smell at all. Its hard to beat mother nature as a matter of fact u cant beat it.

Thanks for the help fellers. And yeah i hear you there. You can tell by reading some of this stuff what seems logical and what doesn't. I usually do hunt around water, flatrock river runs through just about everything i hunt. i think he's just having a rough patch. Usually he trees slick off of a recast more so that out of the truck. I dont correct him on much of anything unless hes blatantly slick. Hes very timid from whoever had him before me. he's not much of a comp dog, he could win a couple casts but i dont use him for that, he doesn't have a big enough mouth, but I use him for my pup so i want him to be straight. I looked at a lot of coon over the summer and throughout kill season, treed 9 opening night of kill season in 3 hours behind him. I just think he is having a tough time lately. left him laid up last night so well see what he does tonight.

Went two nights ago and didn't get a good track until around 11:30. Last night my dog and my buddies split treed about 40 yards apart and both had the meat. We were back at the truck before 8:45. I think coons just do what they feel like at the time
