Do you believe there is a coon in those circle trees?

I bought a new light at Autumn Oaks with the red light on it and since I have been using it I find it hard to believe that 4 coon hunter with red lights and coon squaller's and 10 minutes to look could not find a coon in a leafy tree.
I think if there is no hole in the tree it should be minused.
Who's with me ?

. I've shined with red squalled low squalled my lungs out and walked away went on huntin walked back by tree and saw coon.some just won't look. Period. This is something that really aggravates me. A foolish statement. I find a high high percentage of coons squalled them out of dens found them in huge leafy trees and nearly minused dogs on saplings some coon just won't look and it's non of our place to judge another man's dog, he's the one feeding it.

Well obviously you've never had to wait 7 minutes with your dog blowing the top off before you could shine. It's much easier to find them when you can squall and shine when you're walking in. Tell you what next time you hunt take four lights and two dogs let them tree for twenty to thirty minutes before you can shine then shine tree with four lights and then when the 7 is up squall see how good you're at finding them then.

A foolish statment

I'm not saying that coon sometimes will not look I have seen coon in the tree that wouldn't look no mater what I did but I don't believe that would happen three times in a 2 hour hunt

Well after my female came out of heat last April we pulled her off 50 trees. We found coons in 46 of them and that was with the leaves on. That was in several different states and a lot was in compitition hunts. Now how do I fell about the 4 no coon was seen. I would bet anything 3 were slick. This is what I've found. When you have one you almost knows going to have the coon you will be out of breath at the end of shine time because you've blew on a squaller so hard and pulled vines and run around the tree so much. When I have one that I know is proned to miss I stop exerting myself after about 3 minutes. I hear people say all the time would have won if I would have found ole so and so coon.lol. But here is the thing if they started minusing circle trees it really put a holt on entries. And you think dogs are independent now. Lol. If they enforced that they would become really independent. And overtime you would see the complete fallout of the action packed hound. I will say the hounds you see that have been consistant cast winners there hole life have coons when they park.

No matter what your wearing on your head. No matter what your blowing on to make them look. Some dogs are good about having a coon and some folks are just good about finding them.

Well Night shift I have been in a lot of competition Hunts.
In 2009 I was 7th in the world hunt and highest scoring Blue Tick.

Maybe my dogs don't slick tree enough to get practice looking for those coon that don't look LOL

well i to get sick of all the circle trees as well. but i also understand were everyone is saying about having a hard time finding coon. it happens.
i have always felt i could live with a + and - type hunt format,we would all be on the same playing field, but there is so many babies out there that would cry about it. after all look at how they are acting already! most of them already know there dog is slick treeing plenty often but taking there minus points is like having to admit the truth.

I agree with most of what Calicooner an Pam are saying. I wish it was a + or - format. Why is it some dogs are constantly better about treeing big leafy trees with coon that look? lol. Arguing about circle trees is a loosing battle. I have seen WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many trees circled but the way the rules are written (trees touching other trees) I never have an argument.

Think about this when talking about circle trees. Is it the other guys dog on circle trees that your reading about on the message board, Most of the time during a hunt, watching play by plays. Real easy to dismiss those circle trees as slick trees and put those dogs down.
Now think about this. Most people that are in tune with their dog knows by their dogs actions at the tree if it has slick treed or not. You have evaluated the track the dog has run, you have evaluated how your dog came on the tree. Before you even look up the tree you have a good idea of what your going to see. You start to realize that there are some legit circle trees out there and no matter how good your dog is they are going to end up on some of these.

So the question is, with all the light power why can't the coons be found. I can tell you why down here. The trees are so close together you really can't look at one with out some of the view being blocked by other trees.

My question is and it comes from deep within my soul. When the owner of the hound really knows the truth, why would he/she hunt a dog that misses that much.
Please don't tell me because they win. You see by the results that 3 circle trees in 2 hours don't get you to the winners circle. Now a dog that is a slick tree artist gets it chances to win increased as the coon population and the movement of coon in the area it is being hunted is increased. The other side of the coin is with few coon and little movement of the coon. It makes for a long night of empty circe trees.

Calicooner or anyone else that is serious. I ask you this. Don't you evaluate your own hounds truthfully and haven't you eliminated some pretty nice hounds from your pen because it just wasn't showing you enough coon? If your serious about this game you realize there are some pretty nice hounds out there and your 5 out of ten or six out of ten hound is going to come up on the short end to a 7 out of 10 or 8 out of ten hound most of the time. If your not sending the 6 out of 10 hound down the road I don't think you understand the game or at least not playing it at the highest level.

I wish they would hold the world in January. Great hunting that time of year. The reason I love Waler days is because the leaves are off. But I've almost talked a cast into minusing a tree to find it sitting there finally.

Some hunters are better at finding coons than others. At 67 years old with cataract plastic implants and 57 years of coon hunting experience my opinion is that not circling trees would definitely cause me to quit competition coon hunting.
How about anyone over 55 years old being able to use a thermo imaging device and a flame thrower. Then Id agree to not circle trees.

I am 54 year old my first coon hunt I was 8
I have hunted all over the USA.
When I Am hunting back east and we walk up to a small tree you guys say (this doesn't look good ) the first time I herd that I though what is he talking about but now I understand Your dog trees real fast but is 30 percent accurate so there is a 70 percent chance there is no coon in that sapling.
I have also noticed that in competition hunts most of the coon seen in any tree are seen in the first 2 minutes. I don't remember ever seeing a coon in competition in the last minute.
We don't have as many coon as you do or as much comp hunts but a dog that trees fast with no coon is not what I'm
Looking for.

Coonhunting has to start at home. That home is the persons heart and soul and mind that owns the dog. Think about this. Like anything else in life there are people that coonhunt which are at several different levels of the sport and understanding of dogs abilities.
Our coonhounds have a lot of different things they do. Please understand that there are a lot of young people or inexperienced people on here that are having a hard time just getting over the basics of what a hound should do. Many can't get their hounds to hunt, many can't get one that can track. Many can't find one that has the time to run a coon for running junk. PLEASE, I AM NOT PUTTING INEXPERIENCE OR LACK OF KNOWLEDGE DOWN. ALL OF US HAD IT AT ONE TIME. ALL OF US HAD TO START SOMEWHERE. Those that are inexperienced and finally get a hound to get over some the the basic hurdles like hunting hard, having a good nose and not afraid to do it alone. Are happy to have their dog park at a tree. Many in the beginning are happy with that 40 or 50% coonhound. At least now they are seeing some coon. It is the experience and actually the serous dedication and understanding that moves someone to have that better hound.
Here is the thing thats funny. I really don't care how many circle trees your dog makes in a hunt and I don't know why anyone else would either. Just makes that dog easier to beat. One gentleman mentioned winter time hunts. I have traveled from FL to the land of winter several times. We would be driving down the roads on the way to the hunts looking at the bare sticks in the fields laughing that there won't be many circle trees in the winter wonder land. Guys there are way to many. It isn't the trees, the dogs, the luck of the draw. It is the heart and soul on the man behind the dogs. Many come to win with a winner. Many are happy to just be their with their 50% hound. They paid their entry and have a right to be there. They even get lucky and win sometimes. But because the rules are written to keep everyone in the game during a hunt and at the end everyone feels they almost won. That doesn't mean you have a winner. Years of experience and being honest with yourself determines if you have a winner or not.

Benifit of the doubt

Circle trees are to give the hound the benefit of the doubt...period...yes I know that a lot of these trees are without coon but how can you do this fairly. Eastern NC has pines that are over 100 feet tall and never are without pine needles. How can you minus that tree...I hunt out of a boat a lot and have seen coon in the tree across the bay or down the river and pull up to the bank leash dogs and never to find the coon, after looking for an hour...Load dogs in boat pull back from the bank 200 yards and there he sits plain as day looking at me...I think we can all agree that giving a dog minus points for treeing a coon that cannot be found but possibly could be there would be unacceptable.....And for you guys that are seeing coon in 48 out of 50 trees in competition...Take care of him! That hound don't live at my house and never has.... that's all I can say...lol
