Not every tree that is shined for the full time before it is circled. This is a competition and there is some strategy used by the accomplished handlers. Knowing your dog, knowing the score, keeping track of time and knowing the other dogs tendencies plays a bigger role than most spectators know.
I will agree that there are way to many slick trees being circles tho.

I argued with a judge one night about circling a tree my dog was on. He said there's a hole right here with hair on it. I told him there might be hair on it but no coon can fit in that hole. The hole was the size of a skoal can at best. I told him to minus her and I'll send her on. He refused to minus the dog and the rest of cast said to circle it. She went on to tree the only coon seen that night. But makes you wonder how many of these circles are bogus. Only other thing I hate more than a den is a hemlock pine. Which is about all you'll tree around here in the rut.

It's a totally different ball game shining a tree by yourself when pleasure hunting then it is in a competition hunt. By yourself you can squall, pull vines, smack the tree, shine a dim light while walking in, and not have to handle your dog. In a cast you have a lot of noise and 3 or 4 lights hitting most of the trees and no squalling or pulling vines for the majority of the tree time unless all dogs are handled.

It's just totally different.

I started back hunting BP and hes 7 for 7 coons found within 2-3 minutes ,

now if you don't think a coon can get thru a Skoal can sized hole you must have them big monster size coon , we have plenty coon that will squeeze in one

Knowing your dog. I understand what you're saying by this but it goes both ways, if ya got one that slicks why waste all the shining time or risk proving there's nothing up there but leaves and branches lol

About 90 percent of them circle trees should be minuses ! But you won't have much of a score if they do that lol

WE had a non-hunting judge circle a known "SLICK"" tree , one of those trees we tree all the time while pleasure hunting and never see a coon in it, NEVER!....his excuse was that he didn't want to make the competition mad wanted them to keep coming back to their events.
SAD SAD SAD state of affairs what these hunts r sinking to.
This is one reason their circling slick trees.

If a coon can get their head through a hole they can get their body through it too. We have some good sized coon in Minnesota and I have seen coon go into and squalled coon out of holes that amazed me.
I also know if they aren't there they can't look.

i am bad at finding coon, nomatter if its pleasure or comp.

I will shine the 10 in a hunt no matter if its my tree or yours. I have seen way too many coon after we quit and gave it one more look, many of which that
'should
' have been easily seen

Who really cares I don't care if somebody's dog can't tree a coon and racks up some circle points! As long as mine isn't there with it!! It really should bother anybody what another man's dog does.

Circle points can't win UKC hunts with exception of the slam hunts. I will never worry about a dog racking up a bunch of circle points. That is unless my dog is covering those circle trees, then I have bigger problems to sort through.

When you show up to a hunt when the leaves are on you know going into it that almost every tree is either getting circled or plussed.

Several years ago I was hunting a pair of curs. They treed on the same tree 7 nights in a row without me being able to find the coon. This tree didn't have a leaf or a hole to it. The 8th night they treed the same tree again but this time I found the ol' sow and put her out. Poor thing didn't have a tooth in her head. My point is sometimes they ARE there, they just have to make a mistake and show themselves. How many of y'all have enough faith in your dogs to shine the same tree 8 nights in a row?

Excellent post- Faith in your dog sure plays a role in how hard and how long one looks up a tree. Hunting these steep mountains you better have a accurate dog! Dave

You can count on 2 hands how many slick trees I've been to with my dog in a year and a half. I'm still doubting a coon can fit in such a small hole. I haven't seen it. Not saying the coon wasn't in there but of I was pleasure hunting that night she would've been looking to get under a coon asap.

If you really want to test that theroy, Catch a coon in a trap, place it in a tight wire cage with a hole the size of a scoal can in it.

Set it out back and check it every so often to see how long that coon stays in that cage. That may help you reach a conclusion.

Just a thought!!

i never can understand why everyone cries nobody would show up at the hunts if they didn't circle all them trees. most fellows get fed up with people circling slick trees and feel the titles are worthless because of them instead. and why wouldn't they?
you can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time.

Don't worry mike, now all these circle trees will just be called squirrel trees. Nothing to try and hide on that now.

I was going to say the same. If they can get their head in they can get the rest of them through. Look at the size of their skull when you skin them. Not nearly as big as they appear all furred out.

I like the cage and a hole theory. I put one in a rabbit pen once with a hole for the feeder. the coon was out of there in 10 seconds or less.
