Looking for a good summer feed

I have fed Hi standard and it is good feed, but I got a dog that gets really hot in the summer. The last few months I've switched to diamond natural chicken and rice. It has not made much difference. Any ideas?

I had a friend recommend SportMix ( black Bag is wat he feeds ) to me awhile back . He spoke very highly of it. So I just switched from ProPac to the SportMix (Blue bag) about 2 months ago. So far I like it better even though they are both manufactured buy the same Mill ( Midwestern Pet Foods). I was previously feeding ProPac (redbag $31 for 44lb sack) and i liked it except its a little higher in price.

The blue bag SportMix here is $30 for a 55 lb sack . I have one female who is a picky eater and hard to keep looking good ( esp when hunted up) and she is looking better than ive seen her in a long time. They even seem to have a more slick shiny coat than ever before. I know ProPac is good and i'd feed it again if i had to but im really liking this SPORTMIX.

There are lots of good feed out there these days .

Victor, 100% grain free, I'm feeding the high energy 24/20(red bag) and the dogs are doing great.

Victor seems to be great feed but it's pretty expensive isn't it?

I've been feeding black gold in the black bag and its 35 a bag with tax which I think is high.

Victor is a few dollars higher than black gold, $40.45 with tax, but if you buy 5 bags at a time it's $37.24, that's the high energy

I feed black bag in winter and rotate between blue and green bag in summer. The dogs keep good weight on and have plenty of energy to go hunt. I have tried several different foods but sportmix has worked best for me. I also like that I can change protein/fat levels without messin up the dogs stomach for a few days. I have also found that less will go further with sportmix than the other brands I have tried. I have a redbone and a walker, both females, in the same pen. I fill the auto feeder with a 40lb sack once every 5 weeks and there is usually 2-3 days worth of food left in the feeder.

I was feeding Victor about a year ago and until they changed the way they were distributing it to the rural feed stores here and they made it nearly impossible for me to buy it . When i contacted Victor about it they really acted like they could care less if i fed it or not so thats what i did as well.... care less.

If it has grain in it and you are feeding it in the warmer months,,you can almost bet their temp gauge is red lining

I have been feeding Victor Blue Bag with Victor Hi Pro

I get 3 blue bags ($34.99 Ea) and 1 high pro($39.99 Ea) and blend it together

Out the door with tax and everything i pay $156.56

Dogs look good and i actually only have 1 pile in each kennel to clean.

I started feeding the recommended rates as well and my dogs are looking great.

So how would the grain free keep the dog cooler than the chicken and rice blends?

Any meat base feed is ideal, stay away from grain based.
Protein will not hurt them, their stomachs are made for it.

I've been feeding Victor in the purple bag for a couple months. My young dog is it good shape and gets hunted.Ive never seen a dog get as hot as he does in my life.He has no quit but I'm afraid he's gonna have a heat stroke.I just switched to the grain free Victor. Its called the Hero blend? Its designed for military or police dogs from what I gather.

What is the difference between a "summer feed" and a "winter feed"?

The only reason I can think of is lack of hunting durning the summer, less fat and protein needed with less exercise. Just my thoughts.

If it's Summer, a dog is going to get hot.....Period....!!!
They have to be conditioned and used to it. Winter, a little more feed, Summer maybe a little less....?

😏
