Fixing to pull my hair out.

Not sure what has happened toyet Ryder dog. Was doing really really good then took a turn to the dark side. Last Monday night he rolled in 200 yards on a good track and treed like he was suppose to. Sounded good, walked in and there set a possum. Wore him out and cut him again, he went almost a mile, worked what sounded like a older feed track and treed a big oak. Couldn't find it but belive it was there.
Tuesday night, first off he got in a hole, well he was pulling out a possum when I got there. Wore him out , cut him in a different spot and could him blowing around in a clear cut, right next to another hole that I would say had a possum. Worked a little harder on that head, cut him again and thought he was burning a coons tail. He came treed so I drove close to him. He was in another hole and pulled out anether possum.
Well over the weekend I bought a shock system, never have cared for them but figured it was time.
So tonight I took him back to the woods, he went 3/4 of a mile working a track and all of a sudden it heated up. He came treed and I walked in and dammed if he didn't have a possum. I fried his tail. Cut him again and he went about 60 yds and treed another, fried him again. Cut him for the last time, he went about 600 yds and dammed if he didn't tree another.
NOW YOU KNOW WHY I'M WANTING TO PULL OUT ALL MY HAIR. !!!!!

I'VE tried about everything. Hope it's just a phase.

Ya and haven't seen a coon since.

Soon

Soon enough he will have all the possum's killed and will go back to treeing coon. If he does not kill them you should. Come hunt with me… I have a very low if non existent coon population. You can guess why. They are probably rutting just like a coon and stink a little to much. Or you might put him up a month or two and then take him out. Some dogs just like possums or skunks and can never be truly broke.

Quit

Just a suggestion, I would not cut him loose after he tree's a possum. What has worked for me is to shoot the possum down and wear him out with it. Then head back to the truck with the dog and the possum, about every 30 seconds stop and show him the possum and tell him NO !! and give him a possum slap. Do this all the way back to the truck . Take the possum and when you tie him back up give him another lesson. Next morning same thing show him the possum and make sure he knows it's bad news. Keep it up until he shows you he really understands possums are bad. You have to stay concentrated on the problem before you hunt him on coon again. It might take a couple possums to get him completely broke but you have to win the battle. Just my opinion.

ole possum

I usually try to stop before they tree but in your case I would shoot it out and let it drop and got get dog on lead and right when he is going to get shock the piss out of him, cured 2 walkers like that last year and they have both run underneath possums since. The dog will naturally want to go back to possum just increase voltage eventually they'll stop!!!! Good luck!! My red gyp out of Tim Figgs line was easy she'd killem on the ground and I'd thrash her and took her to truck and didnt hunt her for 2 weeks. Now during hunts she will come back into me if one of dogs on cast trees a possum, put the 15 on her and lets go minus your dogs....

Hey Tim

Here's what I would do! First I would'nt use the shocker on him. Now the next time he trees a possum, when you get to the tree and see the the grinner take your dog and tie him back at least 100 yards or more from the tree. Then go back to the tree and shoot out the possum. Then carry it over to him, throw it down in front of him and when he goes after it pick it up and hit him with it. Then throw it in front of him again, if he still goes after it pick it up and hit him a bunch again with it; keep doing it until he won't go after it anymore.

If you get him away from the place he treed he will separate the difference between treeing and the possum.

Just keep repeating what I said every time he trees one do the same thing and you will eventually get him broke.

It's worked for me

Thanks John

shooting a possum is just rewarding the dog and sending mixed signals.... run a shock collar on your hound, and if you see he has a possum up the tree, walk off without saying anything to your hound and shock him good. If he goes back to the tree again, shock him again. He will learn that possums are painful mistakes.

A shocker can be a magic wand, but rarely can you slap it on a dog, go to pressing buttons and expect a 180. The possible bad side effects are much greater if you don't think it through and take your time.

Thanks for all the replies, I've doneosteoporosis of what all of you have said except for the hot sauce. The guy that had him before me has him trained on a shock collar so he knows about them. His daddy went threw a spurt of them, treed 7 straight and then no more, one more and it will be 7. I'm gonna go to some new woods tonight and see if it will be 7 or a coon.

PM Sent

I sent a PM of what worked for me recently. A tree dog can be disciplined on a tree and if they have any brains be able to sort out what you want from them. The easy learners want to please you. The hard heads could care less what you want. lol They hunt for themselves and not you anyway.

Hoping you can get him broke. I've seen some mighty creative possum breaking over the years. lol

I put them thru hell week. I catch a opossum and put it and him in a dog box that has closed sides and doors with just enough room to get air. I put a shock collar on the dog and feed and water them both in there for a week. All different times of day and night I shock him numerously times a day. After a week I let them out and usually they are both sick from each other. It works I've broke several with this method.

Wellthe possum treeing streak is over. Not saying he will not tree one the next turn out he gets but worked his button off for this one. Thought he was jacking around with another possum. It took him a bit to get them rounded up but he had 4 in this tree.

Good deal! But what ya got hiding in the other side of the box?

The most stubborn I ever had was a female I picked up that only lacked 2 wins to grand, man she liked them possums. She came from up north, all I can figure was they didn't have many as we do! Some are just stubborn, I'd say his is mainly youth and just wanting to tree something he can kill. Good luck.

I was wondering the same thing

Lance Hutton showed me a possum breaking method one time that is 100 percent full prove

Tim. im a bit old school too. I have never owned a shocker. Best way to tune a dog for treeing a possum is shooting it down and beating them with it. They wont like them quite as much afterwards ussually. Lol

A dog that has brains after getting a whooping from a dead possum should cower and be scared to death of them when he sees them. Just like everything its not gonna work on every dog but have seen many broke this way. 1 of my buddies walkers was having a bit of a problem with possums. Did this and the next weekend all the dogs in a pkc cast were dumped on 1. His was the only dog that run right past it without out even a bark and treed a coon. The others bayed it and killed it.
