Male or Female?

What is everyone's opinion and why? If you had to choose a male or female puppy to train to hunt which would it be and why? Take out factors of your other dogs for breeding and such. Say this would be your only dog, which would you prefer?

I prefer males for the same reason, theyre a whole lot less of a hassle than females. females when theyre in heat are a pain in the ass, even if its your only dog. but that being said, my next pup will probably be a female just for the ease of breeding and keeping a line going

I prefer a female. I have always had better luck with them. Yes, they do come in heat and it always seems to be just before the hunt you really want to go to, but if you have a really nice female and like what you got and want to keep some of it you can always pay the best male around. Not so easy with a male to get to the best female, so with a male you might have to settle when you really want the best.

Males for me

I have a whole lot better luck with males and do like them best. I do get tired of as Rex said "males are in heat all the time". So for that reason I keep trying to start a good female but female pups just never end well for me. It really doesn't surprise me though that females are at 66% and males are at 34% I'd say 3 out of 4 people I hunt with like females best.

I have always liked a male better, seems to me that when you have to correct them, most males can mentally take more boot leather and respond in a positive manner more so than females. Also percentage wise I feel a male just naturally has more stamina and drive than most females...In my experience as females get older some change occurs in their head and mental changes come and go within there heat cycles...jmo

If I were just a pleasure/hide hunter I would prefer a Male dog. I say this because male dogs are usually physically stronger, They are usually bolder at a younger age. But the down side to MOST male dogs for me is that when they make a mature seasoned coon dog many of them you cannot just turn loose with anybody and have a good hunt. Some male dogs just don't get along well with other seasoned male dogs in certain situations.

Females on the other hand are not quite as bold/dominant (in general) as the male pups, in the early training years, but when they reach 4-5 years old and are seasoned coon dogs you can just about hunt them with anything and it doesn't affect how they operate and they seem to get along better with different dogs.

So I like male dogs to pleasure hunt and I like females to haul around the country and hunt with many different dogs .

I've had mostly males since mid 60's,,don't know why, just like males better,,but my brother and i got a female a couple of years ago,,she was the easiest smartest dog I've ever had to train,,she actually trained herself,,we just put her in the timber,,so I'm gonna try my luck again,,gonna keep a male and female pup that we got out of her and train, and if this female pup starts like the momma did,I may just be hunting mostly females.

That brings up a question...is there any way to break or even slow down a male that has to mark every bush and tree in the woods????
I have a little Jack Daniels house dog that has been neutered but he will mark a particular spot on the floor every chance he gets...in spite of near brain damage to try and get him to straighten up!! He wont do it when anyone is around, but it don't take him but a matter of seconds to strike.

Females in every species are hormonal, moody, and unpredictable. I despise hunting females, seems like they are messed up 6 months out of the year. If you're dog doesn't leave hard, wants to follow females around, fights, or pees on everything.....its not just because he is a male, its because he is probably n idiot

Male I prefer. Males have the strength and speed. Females have just been way to Moody for me. In my experience dogs are alot like people. I try to punish the female for doin wrong and theyl get mad and not wanna cooperate the rest of the nite. My males are just like dang my bad. my older female I feel wit age is even a more hit or miss whether or not if she wants to hunt that nite or not. Males always wanna hunt.

I really prefer females myself. But I think any hound that has brains between their ears can be a pleasure to hunt. If they don't have the brains and the want to please you, than they are going to be a pain in the a$$ to hunt or train regardless of male or female.
