Where have all the Old Timers gone?

Once upon a time on here you could get an answer to any question you asked by an old time coon hunter not to say the younger generation don't know the sport.

Jim Sizemore had thec answer to any question you wish to ask about any rule in the rule books.
Joe Newlin had the answer about any question you had about Clover dogs and Genetics in general.

Elvis had the answer about how to win any word hunt and has hunted dogs for Russ Bellar the man ever coon hunter envies world hunt winners after word hunt winners.

John Wick wrote three books that could not yesterday or today or tomorrow tell you more about how to train a coon hound than he did in those books but he can speak up and these young bee line hunters i call them will try to shoot him down in a second.

Tom Hopkins can speak up about the Lipper dogs and 20 people will be on him like stank on s*** before he can Say TWO words like they know more about the Lipper dogs than he does.

No wonder ever one is going to Face Book for there are about 10 people on this forum that has the answer to ever thing and they can't agree on nothing.LOL.
I remember when i was 25 or 30 years old i thought there was no one out there that knew more about dogs than i did but the older i got the dummer i became for the harder it was for a dog to please me and i now feel stupid for thinking i was smart back then for the older i get the more i learn how little i knew back 30 years ago and now my time is running out and i don't have time to learn it all over again.JMO.

Carl, I've asked the same question several different times. This site is not what it once was. But it was never the same as the OLD Coonhound Central site. I made lots of life long friends off of that site and even had one call me yesterday morning from Utah. We use to have a blast in Coonhound Central's chatroom, but that all went away thanks to Robert Hardesty.

Lot more fun reading other peoples arguments than being part of them yourself.lol.

Man did you say a mouthfull there. I think you were talking about me in the statment above. I see the samething in my son. He just don't understand what he has in his dogs. One day, he will look back and say, maybe old dad was right.

Everything evolves, including this board.
I dropped in at a PKC hunt last week at our club and counted 6 youngsters that have never coon hunted without a Garmin. For some reason, that really stunned me.
Nothing stays the same.

My main thing is when the younger bunch say that the dogs of yesterday weren't as good as the dogs of today how would they know they weren't born yet !!! Can you see these dogs of today hunting 3 or 4 hrs without minusing out or back in the day see the dirty looks you would get if you told the old timers it's ok you had a dead cast but we are going to give you a trophy anyway lol !!!

So true about watching the garmin!!! And most of the time I"m not sure they are even listening for their dog to tell them what is going on. Have friends the same way while pleasure hunting. I tell them to put the **** thing away & listen to what your dog is telling you. Take care, Ron.

How old do you have to be to be an " Old Timer "?
I'm 55 and remember shaking my head when I had a younger hunter tell me that he bought a shock collar and tracking unit and hip boots BEFORE he bought his first dog.

At 18 , I was hunting in my tennis shoes with a single-shot rifle and a two-cell flashlight ! LOL
Started hunting with my dad and his friends as soon as I could walk. For those years , it was those cheap green boots with the yellow trim. Anybody remember those? LOL
Man , we had it rough and didn't even know it ! LOL

It's kind of like the "I just don't know anymore" thread!

They're still out there, you just have to know where to look!

Time changes every thing and sometimes its for the better. The older guys will always be apart of coon hunting and u can always learn a lot from them. But sometimes they get caught up and stuck with yesterday and forget about today. Today's tegnology is the best thing that's happened to coon hunting in my opinion. The garmin has changed a lot of things and have saved many dogs lives around these parts. Not to mention the training it opens up. I have hunted without them many years ago when u pulled up cut the dog and drove around half the night listening for your dog treed deep in some hollor. Sometimes it would be day light before you found him. Back when u cut 3-4 dogs and it was a track race to the tree were every dog was on the same tree. Now days its not like that and I'm for one am glad. I'm happy I have a garmin to put me right were my dog is at all times. If you try to teach a young man or woman something and they don't listen then you done your part. You tried!!!! Its up to them to listen!!! Nobody knows it all in this sport and any body that thinks they do is just plain stupid. A fellor told me long ago when you stop trien to get better you have reached the point of being as good as your ever gonna be. But its hard to ask a question about a dog on this board cause every dog is different what worked for ole blue might freeze ole red up. You have to understand the dog its self before you can say do this or that. Just my opinion

How many of you guys remember the days when you cut a dog loose and if it ran junk, but you couldn't do much about it??? You had to know what the dog was doing by his voice and then listen or guess where it might cross a road and try to get there to stop him. If you missed and he got away the next step was go home and wait for the phone to ring. Sometimes it never did. I'll take my Alpha over that any day!!!
The days of Wheat lights and Wick froglegs {sewed to the top of the boot} and you had to know how to read a magnetic compass, hunt with someone who did or get lost a lot. Most dogs could quickly figure out that if they shut up and ran they could get out of range of the old shock collars. I don't know if I would call them "the good ole' days" or not....does hunting in those times make you one of the old timers?????
I remember when a Wheat light with the "brighter bulb" was top line...now our walking lights are brighter than that!!!!
It's funny, the things that never change...like guys that wont admit their dogs run junk.
