Dangerous temperatures

What are the limits that you would let your dog sit out side in?
Is -33F degrees too cold to let you dog sit in the dog box with a big bale of straw? Just wanting some opinions and facts of what your dogs might of went through. I know I would not want my prize dog freezing to death but coon dogs arnt wimps ether. Any one ever seen a frost bitten dog?

Their body temps are higher then ours, they have a coat that insulates them. A good quality house and bedding combined with these factors keeps them comfortable at much colder temps then we can withstand. If it is particularly cold and wet I pair mine up in the dog box at night. The heat is way more dangerous for a dog then the cold is.

They need to be well hydrated. I like to boil a pot of chicken quarters and pout the broth over their food when it's freezing or below. Also, plenty of bedding in each house.

I would be real careful of this post. First time poster with a made up name and no location asking us what we do to take care of our dogs. I could be wrong but that has animal rights activist written all over it. BTW I just realized that I am guilty of the same thing . My name is Michael Johnson.

I believe you are right...

So, drkill, my hounds are sound asleep on the couch as we speak as the sleet, snow, and cold arrive, to answer your question.

My dog comes in the house when it gets in the single digits. He also gets hamburger and eggs cooked in lard mixed with his food all winter. He's as spoiled as they come...but he's a pretty fair coon dog. He earns his keep.

Dogs

My kennels are heated. Thee runs have 2000' of tubing ran through the concrete and my outside boiler circulates hot water melting snow and ice. Then on the inside of the building I have a gas heater (because I have free gas) keeping it a nice 60* inside.

WELL PUT. MINE HAVE BEEN IN THE HOUSE WARMER FOR THEM. THERE BOXES ARE WELL INSULATED. BUT WITH THESE EXTREME TEMPS I DECIDED IT WAS BEST THEY WERE IN. WHEN I TAKE THEM OUT THEY CAN NOT WAIT TO GET BACK IN.

BUT NOW THAT I HAVE READ THIS WE ARE HEADED TO THE BANK!!! WILL HAVE TO HAVE AN ADDITION PUT ON HOUSE FOR DOGS BEDROOMS. I LIKED THAT ABOVE.

Get face to face with a wolf at -30 and ask it the same question. I'm sure it will show you how it stays warm.

You better be careful or someone will accuse you of giving your dog heart disease.

Guys I left this post up last night to see how many of you guys would see it as an anti/activist post , probably a 95% chance that it is . I banned them ,whoever they are . If they want back they can call the UKC office , as far as I'm concerned they are trolling in the rough weather and they will continue to watch us all. Stay on your toes and watch for them.

drkill...

Tell us about your kennel setup. Sounds like you may be inexperienced in taking care of your animals in cold weather. I am sure myself and these other guys could give you some pointers. Maybe post some pictures for us. Or...just mind your own business about our hounds. They all die of old age. Thanks. Larry

St Bernard

We have our St Bernard on the back porch with a dog box back there. We now have 10" of snow and she has yet to get in the box. She has been rolling in it, rooting under the snow and playing in the snow. Can't get enough of this cold weather. The hounds are all comfortable in the kennels, just fed them this morning and fresh water. They were out looking at the snow and barking at it. Lol
