To me, "dedicated service to the Association" means just that.
If a man goes and wins a bunch, then good for him but he already got his recognition. If he has good friends that will campaign for him, then good for him.
However, this is jmo, but I see lifetime membership as a way to recognize those who don't necessarily pound the hunts or shows, but work extremely hard for the ABTCHA and the breed. They serve as an officer and are working at B&T Days, not just enjoying themselves. They also support the breed as a whole and other fanciers with a spirit of teamwork. To award this to those that have not done this, diminishes and cheapens the award, imo.
I'm not saying Gene and Lawton aren't deserving. I'd say they both probably are, especially Lawton.
When you go to B&T Days, look around for those older guys who are carrying show benches, taking entries, helping get casts to the woods, serving as MOH, and going to board meetings. They should be on the short list for an award. jmo.
