Last year was my first time at Southern Days, I drew 3 different guides the 3 nights I hunted and all of them took us to feeder buckets!!!

It's simple to solve. All you got to do is load up your Coondog and go beat those bucket dogs. UKC honors your states hunting laws, and it is legal to bait in NC.

I want to add that I used to think the same way when I started back coon hunting, but competition coon hunting in NC changed my mind. I got to thinking if I can't beat these dogs what does that say about what im packing. I have seen these so called bucket dogs get it done hunting wild coon just as quick. I now will not hunt a dog that can't do both. If you competition hunt in NC you have to have a dog that is good at both to be successful. You will hunt buckets and you will hunt where there aren't any. I have hunted with Train one time in the swamps of NC when he was 16 months. I walked to 4 singles with coon in all of them. The last one was 1.3 miles from where we cut him. I assure you he is not a bucket dog.

let me be clear,i aint haten on no mans dog .....but there are a lot of dogs that are just lost when it comes to big country thin coon where you got to have a coondog to tree coon ,and a lot of it is just hunting them in this envirment, learning to work the wind, knowing where to look for a coon getting deep [if needed] you just cant have that kind of dog droppin straight on hot track every time...buckets are for pups here where im at ,that's it [ PUPS]
and I think about it mossybuck you are right I could get a quick to bark dog work him on buckets and have a bucketdog but im a coonhunter ,I like to go coonhuntin not bucket huntin,so why on earth would I do that?i win with the dog I have and he is a coondog not a quick to bark bucketdog

Train

I have hunted with train and I will be the first to tell you this dog don't need any feeders. I saw him tree 3 singles in 30 min. of hunting time. And none of them were on feeders. He treed them 3 while my dog was way out of pocket treed. Train is a coondog bar none. Congrats Andy and Train.

I agree. Some dogs are lost when it comes to big country. If they are not walked to a bucket they can't tree a coon. I dont hunt that type of dog.

What are you suppose to do when you drive 6 hrs from home and your guide takes you to buckets? Withdraw? I think not.
What are you going to do after you drive 6 hrs to a hunt and you draw a very quick, very accurate walker female that wears you out. Over two drops with buckets (2 coon), then you go to game lands and she puts 2 more coon on you deep through the country? She ain't no pup and she just racked a score up on me. ,,,, I shook his hand and told him he had a Coondog. I also ask him if he knew where another one like her was.

I like to coon hunt and I like to competition hunt and i like seeing good dog work. Bottomline, competition hunting in NC, your going to draw out over buckets at some point. You got to have a dog that can handle all situations.

yes shake the mans hand, he had a coondog but where what I call cheatin comes from huntin that coondog over and over on that/those bucket ,so that dog knows just where to go barking the whole way cause he/she knows coon is there wether it smells it yet or not [first strike] then tree bark just as quick, as coon is most likely to go up closest tree as coon is used to this as well,so even with a good dog its hard to beat bucket hunters, unless you got a bucket dog....either way its part of it.....but most of the time theres a big difference in a quick to quick bucketdog and a coondog...[I did say most of time]but I meant most of the time...

o yea ive bean beat by a quick female walker but she ran straight to every tree and not one time in the whole hunt did we pull dogs of tree and restart,it was one tree then back to truck and on to next bucket..but I train a dog like that and win then I sell her to someone around here ill have to give the money back or have somebody really peed off at me FOREVER

Yes sir we hunted on feeders last night & I am glad we did. You have to see a coon to get plus points. We had a non hunting judge last night & I guess that means nothing. I sure wish I could have hunted them feeders tonight but we didn't. I had to with draw Train due to 2 cut pads. He couldn't hardly walk. Not sure if he will be able to hunt tonight.

Train is all coondog. I really appreciate all the compliments on Train. If anyone wants to see him tree a coon, pick up the phone and call me. It can be arranged.

y is it

That in this breed when somebody gets an exceptional hound that wins consistantly someone gets the jealous bone and starts puttin them down. How bout congradulate the man and his hound and keep ur thoughts to yourself. Lets try workin together for our breed. Ive hunt in n.c. on buckets one night and never saw a coon til after the hunt when we went pleasure huntin without buckets. Guess nobody had a bucket dog on that cast.

I drew the same spot that Train and Andy did on Thursday night. I saw where their tracks were melted out from Thursday night and they had basically hunted the same ground as us. Last night we saw two coons in there one of which was in a den which after I hit the squealer it came up and stuck it's head out of the hole. Every member in the cast saw the coon do this. I did not win the cast but the guy who did got a first place on his dog

I have met Andy a couple of times only but would say that hunting in those conditions and seeing what I saw that Train is one to watch. The farm we hunted was a beautiful large stretch of woods with a real nice creek bottom to hunt down for a long way. Congratulations on the cast win to Andy and Train
