I have found it best to get 2 that are different in sound, as different as possible. Try the one first and if it does not work switch, I think it's the sound change that makes them look.
I like my smaller aluminum bodies like the Zepp's or Banshee for my first choice/selection, they usually work all by themselves. If they do not work I either have a Timothy Ball (wooden) or my old plastic Olt (Plastic) as my alternate. The Olt has been the BEST for a place that gets hunted alot by guys using the newer style, it's a different sound altogether and really seems to work when they have become used to the higher pitched sound of the others.

Randy Switzer Flat Land Plotts makes a good one.

I like the ones that Randy Switzer makes. Double reed types are the best. Randy makes them out of all kinds of different wood. Lots of coon will look, some get nervous and start climbing down or jump out, a few coon just don't look and thats the way it goes.

BANSHEE

The very best ! I usely carry one of each with a different reed tone. This time of the year the kitten tone works the best & will make them Run down the tree.

But it also helps to learn how to blow one correctly !

Mr Burt

They are both nice. My buddy carries a Zepp an I carry a Banshee. That way we have two different sounds there at the tree when we go. I just seem to like the Banshee a little more than the other. To each his own.

JESSE

I was just seeing the humor in the way some of us were responding to this post, I have my favorite squaller too, and yes I have a Zepps, 2 Banashees as well as some others even an old orange Bill Boatman one, and have seen many others used with results, even a rabbit distress call used to get them to look, this post is like who makes the best truck, many will have there favorites but in the long run they will all get you to the woods when working right, there is NO right squaller, just a matter of preference. I didn't mean to ruffle any one , just chuckling about the post.

FLATLANDER

Hands down the best I have ever used,

All are custom hand made one at a time, reeds are mounted on rubber.

made by man in Illinois, my opinion they are the best on the market.

I am pretty sure he has a web site,

I have used all of the forementioned and the flatlander is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree alittle about asking whats the best and everyone being different. I asked this because last year I purchased a primos squaller and hate it. I was very disappointed because I have many deer turkey coyote and elk calls made by primos and always really liked their calls but not the coon squaller I got. I guess I should have asked what are some favorites. Seems zepp and banshee would be safe bet. Not to say some others arent as good I just dont want to waste money on another dud.

Flatlander?

Anyone else used the Flatlander Larry mentioned? I assume some of the older ones mentioned might be hard to find.

Thanks for all the post would love to hear more. I like to get others input on experience of others.

I use the flat lander as well. I have the orange one. Very sharp looking. Very nice feel in your hands and very nice tone. I've never had it feeze up on me during the winter either. I went to buy another and I think the guy has taken a break from making them. I bought mine off of jc's coonhound haven. They have a video of one in use if you're curious of the sound. They're made by a man named randy switzer. It's always worth a try though. They vary in price from 15-40 bucks depending on the wood color.

coon squallers and grunt tubes.

I own 4 squaller's . A brand new Banshee, a Zepp, a mitey max I can't seem to be able to find lately, and a Flatlander of Randy's . I love all of them. It's fun to take all of them at once and see which works the best at any one time. But I would say each works great.

I love to call in bucks in the fall and wouldn't think of going hunting without at least three grunt tubes with me. You got to have the right one for the right situation. If you use the right call at the right time you can put them in your lap....same goes for the squaller.

it thanks its a good thank to have several with u when u got to a tree for the different sounds also. I have been an blew one until I give up an someone on the cast walk to the same spot I was standing an shinning an hit theirs one time an the coon look right away. I have a banshee a timothy ball an not sure what the third is. I also feel that a sound that works in open woods an what not may not work in old thick woods or trees if that makes any scence.

If you carry the flatlander, that is the only one you will need and you wont need any lens or rifle if your dog can handle the action because the flatlander will save you ammunition

I can’t stand it!

It is bad enough that these guys are better looking than me, smarter than me, have better dogs than me, and now, bigger budgets.

Larry is the new National Sales Manager for Flatlander, and how is a guy to compete with Shane, who has Butterbean as his National Sales Manager!

The thing that everyone needs to be aware of here, and that absolutely nobody knows about, is the Butterbean Factor. I run into the guy for a minute or two at Autumn Oaks and then, a few days later, while I am holed up in a hotel in Kansas for Sales Meeting, watching the NFL opener, I see the Bean again, but this time on TV….and now, instead of coon squallers, he is “pimpin” beer and going by the name “Pitbull” and dancing around, singing in a white suit, and the girls and the guys are loving the dude!!!!!!!!!! Butterbean is not a country/gospel singer at all, but some kind of rapper, singing songs and music I have never heard in my life!! Do not underestimate the influence and power of Butterbean!

I am going to have to close up shop if this continues!

Thanks to everyone for their support over the years!

You can visit us at www.markzepp.com

Happy Hunting!

Big Mark
