Garmin/Scratching?

What would you do if you were on a cast and someone's Garmin beeped in their pouch? Ask them to turn it off, or immediately say they are scratched?

I would first ask them to see it. If it's on you should adhere to the rules. jmo

When i judge i ask before we start if everyone has their handheld off. After that if i hear a beep i know it wasnt left on by accident.
Its pretty easy to turn it on to mark the truck and forget to shut it off, i wont scratch a guy for an honest mistake.

I'm sure I would scratch if it was on but I wouldn't write them up unless I thought it was intentional.

Only if it's an Alpha. The Astro and all radio trackers can be carried on the cast any time as long as they are powered OFF. I'm not sure how they handle the Sportdog GPS. Confusing? Oh yeah.

The Sportdog can be used if the shocking part of the collar is removed. Alpa collars are made in housing, so there is no way to disable the shocking part.

Honestly

Have left it on by accident once, was to paranoid to check it durring the hunt in fear of getting the axe, Thank goodness all tones are turned off. (wheew) Since then I double check it. But feel if don't pull it out, leave em on. Had a hard time finding dog recently after a hunt, would not connect ,found dog 1.25 away after about an hour, had been in the ground or under something? would have been easier to find, would have at least showed last position. Don't feel they would be a big advantage durring a hunt except knowing which direction they may be, would not tree mine by that gadget LOL. I want to hear them..

I woulnt make a big deal out of it just ask them to turn it off only because thats what the rules are
I think they should be left on if I had a person on my cast that wanted to tree his dog every time it showed it treed that would be fine with me and after the dogs being shot in several states the past month we need to adapt I believe you can disable tree mode on a garmin

I don't like the rule but it is the rule. This has come up on here from the first time garmin came out. Everyone should know by now or learn the hard way I can't see getting them barred for it though.

I would base my decision on how much of a pain in the rear the guy was. If it was at the start of the hunt I would just ask him to turn it off. If it was into the hunt and the guy was being a jerk I would scratch him but if he was a pleasure to hunt with I would just simply ask him to turn it off and continue to enjoy a night of hunting.

RULE CHANGE

for all the time and effort put into a dog i think rules should just be changed to include use of garmin and get it over with, or 1 handler put all dogs in his and left on so ya's aren't walking all over creation thinking a dog is one way and ended up it was an echo bounces off through a hollow, been there done that, and it might keep some the older ppl in the hunts(ones who cant hear to well) i'm already there now JMO

Tim the shocking ports can be removed from the Alpha and rubber cover put in the holes to keep trash out of it.

That may be true, but it would have to be taken off the dog to be inspected. What Sportdog is saying is that if you see 2 antenna on the Sportdog, the shocker is on the unit and if you only see 1, the shocker has been removed.

I was told the reason they won't allow an Alpha without contacts is because you can still tone the dog. Just what I heard. We just leave ours in the truck which is what we did all along before the Garmin came out. No big deal.

These comments are the about the same as the ones I heard at the club the other night after a guy was scratched for his garmin coming on. He said the garmin coming on was an accident which I know can happen cause it happened to me one night. I turned mine off and no one in my cast said anything about it. Judge in this cast didn't give the guy a break. Supposedly it happened just a few seconds after they turned the dogs loose, but I know a rule is a rule. Sounds like even though a rule is a rule, different people handle it differently.

I AGREE. If you are crazy enough to call you dog based on it telling you he is treed then you will probly get minused anyway. I think we should be able leave them on and turn off the noises. imo

How did anyone ever hunt without a Garmin?!?!!

If you wanna leave it on leave it in the truck...if you wanna carry it turn it off...pretty simple....

If they are ever allowed to be used during hunt time I am gunna turn my beep beep system up loud and walk around with it on all night long.

I use that thing so often I can't even remember the collar numbers lol....if I can't hear my dog I know where to walk to find him 98% of the time..treed over the next ridge..
