What's wrong with comp hunts?

For those of you that wonder why numbers are down at local club hunts please read some if the comments in the thread "Is pitching your dog in a hunt lying" and you'll see exactly what the problem is.

hunt numbers are down for the most part due to the economy. Do i hunt for a slip or do i feed my family......another reason is that titles are losing their value by the second.

Yep Yep. When a cast win is decided by a coin toss, or other shady means, it sure does put a long shadow on those titles.

Can't beat em. Join em is my motto. I think hunt numbers are down because not as many folks hunt anymore. That's what I think Has nothing to do with cheating. Prolly has more to do with whining cry babies. I hear them every hunt. That's what's about ended it from me. Always gettin cheated. Most are full of crap. I know that much. I've judged em by the letter and they still get screwed somehow. They never blame themselves. That's a fact.

Exactly right......... And the handful on here that make up the crazy scenarios about how they got beat by a 2 to 2 vote on a 3 dog cast, probably doesnt help either.

You guys really wana know why?

People bring a dog that isn't ready and when it performs poorly they get discouraged.

The serious hunters and trainers will be at the hunts. Why? Because they put the time in through the week.

Everyone wants to win and folks don't realize when you sign up that is automatically 3 losers per cast.

I've handled in two hunts and I was very green to the rules, but my dog kinda took up for the rest. There were a few times I knew they were wrong but my 19 mo old dog made up for it by himself every time . That was quite some time ago but I'll give it another shot when the time comes.

Just look around at Americans in general today. The nation as a whole is seriously overweight. Especially amongst the school age kids, obesity is the norm. Everywhere you look you got 250 pound 6th graders and that's just the girls. We are no longer a nation of participants, we are now a nation of spectators.
The latest generation would much rather play video games than go outside. Everything evolves.

And that's why hunt numbers are down. They will never be back where they once were and in 50 yrs. Its all gonna be gone I believe.

There are a lot of reasons the hunts numbers are down and most of them have already been mentioned on this thread. I do not believe that cheating has that much to do with it. As a matter of fact from what I hear from the old timers cheating was worse in the old days. I have been in a ton of hunts over the last 16 years and have only been on a handful of bad casts. Many people have one bad hunt and they get discouraged and think that everyone is trying to cheat them. In my opinion if you are going to be a comp hunter you have to be thick skinned and you have to be competitive. Sometimes you get knocked down and you have to pick yourself up and regroup, it's really not that different than any other sport.

i don't think it has anything to do with cheating or getting screwed. I hunted the hunts for many years and never do i remember just getting done wrong. most of the time i beat myself or did not know the rules well enough at first.
It has been said in another post. People bring dogs that are NOT ready for the hunts. And the economy as well has a bearing on the turn out.
