English Redtick vs English Bluetick

English Dogs.... Reds vs Blues
Why do most folks prefer English Redticks instead of the Blues? Why do most breeders try to make crosses that they hope will produce mostly Redticks? I know several die-hard English hunters that don't like, and won't hunt, the Blue ones. I for on used to be one of these guys if it wasn't Redticked I wouldn't feed it now I want Blues. I know what changed me but I want to know everyones thoughts.

Below is a picture of what I really want. It is ok to dream isn't?? Lol

The blue ones to me seem like they have more brains then the red ones. Just something I have seen over the years. I think they both have good traits but the blue ones seem to start and listen better. JMO

Anyone that breeds for color or picks a pup because of color is likely making a mistake. I have had some good ones with about every color the English breed has to offer. I get mostly redticks when I breed but it is not because I was breeding for them. I breed for ability and let the color come as it may.

I have always preferred the blue English. Maybe that is why I'm just a small timer as I remember like you that a few years back many people started breeding for color and some even wanted to require the English to be RedTick.

I have been Hunting, Breeding, and training English dogs since the late 60's early 70's. I have only owned & trained two Redtick dogs in my life.

So here is why I stayed, Prefer the blue ones. Now this is only my experience and I (by no means) want to imply that this would be logical for all people.

A-My blue English dogs seem to be better track dogs in rougher conditions, (ie:frozen ground, snow, extremely dry, rock cliffs etc.). What I mean by that is when I get a good one, it seems to be better track dog than it's littermate Redticks.

B-My Blue English seem to be able to work a colder track with a little more speed than their littermate Redticks. (again Just my observation)

C-My Blue English seem to be more naturally straight, or seem to break themselves from junk, where the redticks may need a little more electrical stimulation.

D-My Blue English seem to think better. They are not as reactive to coon scent, thus seemingly they are a little more naturally accurate. By that I mean they seem to have more ability to locate a layup coon accurately where the Redtick may be more likely to miss the layup by one or two trees. Again just my opinion on this line I have hunted for all these years.

Interesting Post, Thank You!!

i personally have had better luck with Red ones but if its English and can run and tree the way i like i dont care what color it is haha. i also dont breed for color either, i breed for the traits that like (IE. hunting styles, nose, Mouth and confirmation) color is never considered when breeding.

This is our Blueberry dog who is a littermate of the dog in the first pic. The other pics are of a son and the rest are grandpups. With these English dogs you never know what color you are going to get. These dogs are hunted & showed and it seems we have had good and bad of all the colors. What ever color makes you happy is what I would have.
I like them red, one daughter likes them blue, one white & black and one red,
One of the best dogs I've followed through the woods was red headed with a blue body and red legs.
UKC - Sorry about the bench Blue is standing on,its an old picture.

i never really liked english dogs which dont mean anything but if i had to hunt one & look at one in my kennel it would look like the 1st picture on this post. that is 1 sharp lookin animal. not trying to start a stink but a redtick hound never apealed to me at all. that being said, the very best coondog i ever walked to in the woods was a redtick !!

Just my thoughts only!!!

I am the same as most I have hunted almost solid whites, Red and Whites, Black and whites, Redticks, Blueticks and Tri colors. I used to think like some others that Redtick was to dominate the breed. I won't mention the name but a big breeder told me to cull all off colored ones. This guy was and still is very sucessful. I done that with a litter or two. What helped change that was guy had me to save a pair of blues male and female out of a litter. Well I did and guess what he never came and got them I gave them away at 6 months old to a youth. Mind you these pups were never took out of the pen. And the youth took them hunting in a corn field and lord and behold they treed coooooooooons... From that day forward I acepted what ever came with the litter. Now I find myself wanting the Blues more then any other. I still have redticks, Red and Whites and Black and whiteand yes Bluetick. I can hunt littermated redtick vs bluetick and they are different the redtick is female and the bluetick is male. They both have good noses and sense and tree. But the blue one is more independent then the red one seems to be able to track better and seems to handle better. He eats like a hog and craps like an elephant. The redtick she is semi me too a harder tree dog but strugles some on the track takes her time to eat. If I had all of the best of both into one I would have a world class hound.
All breeds today are not what they were yesterday. Most of todays hounds in all breeds are me twoer hot nosed short eared squeaky mouthed pop up type dogs.
I want a hound to look act and sound like a hound. The example of the tri color female is just a preference. If I had one like that she would probably only run a biscuit. But every man likes a pretty lady and we all know what you get there. Lol... I would like to have whole litter to be full tri color but...
I created this post to see everyones thoughts not to make anyone mad in anyway. And I know they are good and bad in all colors and breeds. Alot people wont fool with English because of the different color they through. But hey where would the others be without the English breed? Today I perfer Blues...But I am not color or breed blind by no means I use a Nite Champion ticked up black and white Walker female as my pup trainer... Shhhhhhhh!!! However I perfer English they seem to give very little trash trouble if any and pack a head full of brains... JMO

I like them red, one daughter likes them blue, one white & black and one red,
One of the best dogs I've followed through the woods was red headed with a blue body and red legs.
UKC - Sorry about the bench Blue is standing on,its an old picture.

I agree with their first statement, but if you prefer blue ones and you have two littermates, say one red and one blue, your probably going to hunt the blue one more because your more willing to put time into the one you like better... I prefer my "showy" or "flashy" dogs, not saying that they hunt better but I'm more likely to hunt one that I like the looks of better compaired to the "uglier" one.

I have had the good, the bad and the ugly, seems like the ugly turn out better but I still like my good ones lol
