i had a female do this, i think she was running river otter. but could never prove it, because she would end up under a coon. but what ever it was would stay in the water for a mile at times.

well

does she tap trees on the way a muscrat or mink will run the creek crossing it several times and run up a tree a few feet and jump back into the creek

Probably not a mink if your dog wasnt tappin any trees. Had my young female burn a track around in about a 3 acre patch of woods the other night and she barked treed about 5 times in 10 minutes and away shed go, I thought she had lost her mind until i saw a big mink scramble up a tree about 50 feet from where we were standing and bail out. Glad they are rare around here.

i cant tell ya for sure, but coons will run down creeks. maybe your dog was running a coon and it went to ground, and your dog came back. next time look for tracks in the mud if it happens again.

I live near a nice sized creek that my dogs sometimes do that at. A couple times I have seen the coons swimming across the creek and my dogs just dont want to cross with em. They will cross smaller creeks but this one they must know is a dangerous one to cross

with the experience i've had the dog always ran with the current. i even had my dog swim down the cedar river dang near two miles barking every breath. we called time out and got back to the truck and drove down to the next road that was a dead end at the river. we could hear her coming around the bend and i put my spot light on her and shined in front of her and could not see anything in front of her. she was either tracking scent on the surface of the water or chasing something that didn't have to come up for air!!LOL thats why i thought maybe a river otter. i didn't know we had them around here either until i got talking to a trapper that traps around my area.

maybe the dog is running a coon track that the coon uses the same in and out every time and it just stumps the dog ive seen it alot you need to find where the dog is stoping track bet there is a hole or culvert or something but regaurdless dog should finish or maybe something is scaring him you need to find a track or where he stops track would be your best bet to find out whats going on or the game camera works well 2 or 3 will get u pics of what your dog is running and your dog.

Sounds like a bobcat, to me had one run a track like that. Giving it all he had stop at a lil watering hole, just stop barking at it. But sounds like a bobcat to me.

bobcats usely run in wide circles and they will climb trees then bell out climb bell out. most people have ruined dogs because they here the dog open up every second on track and think since they are moven fast its junk running sometimes it is sometime it aint i wouldnt even worrie about it i like mine to be junky starten out after they get over a year and ahalf old they just flip a switch and start fallen treed not tellen how meny good dogs were culled or killed because they were junky all the way up to a year and ahalf.
