B&T Treeing Question

Streak my B&T is 3 years old now last season though he would work up a track and sit down on a tree until i got there with always a coon up.. This season he will start a track follow it for a little while and then just stop come back in to check in and go back out but does not go back to where he was..
I was told when i got him that he had been walk hunted mostly but hadnt been hunted much he was 1.5 years old when i got him he treed a coon the first night I took him alone.
Now that you got some info on how he does and how he did do can someone please tell me how they would fix this?

When the dog checks back, and I didnt want him too I would cut me a green 1/4" dia limb and strap him across the muscle part of his hind end and send him on. This will most likely not be a first time fix but enough times and consistancy and your dog will figure out those strappings arent for him and you will be finding him back to treeing coon.
Something else, the coon have plenty to eat in early Oct and they dont lay many tracks, mostly tracks from watering holes. Takes a good lay up dog until those acorns fall to the ground where the coon will be roaming and picking those acorns up. Then we have rut. Nov, thru Feb is when the coonhunting is most fun in my part of TN.

Last season he came on hard in the end of Nov. untill the end of the season I thought about trapping me a coon and turn it loose then wait about 25-30 min and turn him loose and see if he runs and trees it

Sounds to me the dogs got you trained. I'd wear him out for that crap. He's lazy and smart. Bad combo to have. My labs at times act that way and they are 10 x's smarter than any coonhound us there softer. You would not believe the whippings they have had. They get back to doing what they are supposed to pretty quick after a few applications.

Some dogs can take a switch some can't. So if you don't want to lay into him tie him up where he came into you and walk away. Find a log and sit 5 or 10 min. Then go back to him walk him a little ways and cut him again. Every time he comes into you tie him up and leave him. This works best if you can take another dog with you that will hunt. When your dog gets tied up for coming back and left tied up when the other dog is treeing it tends to light a fire under them. Somes guys like to use a heavy hand for everything. I don't, beating a dog leads to man made mistakes that will cause you problems later on. Good Luck

I'm not a black a tan guy I know a guy who has some fine black dogs but when a dog come in to check in with me unless its a really young pup I sorta do like the guy above except I sling thier butts back into the box an let them hear the race go on he is correct it will light a fire in them after a couple times.

i dont know for sure, but when your dog strikes a track and comes back to you it might be some kind of junk.alot of times a dog will tell on hisself when there running junk, ive heard dogs that run trash and know better choke back on a a track, when i say choke back i mean they aint as loud as they are when running coon.i really dont know if i would whip the dog when he comes in ,i think the best time is when i know hes running junk.i hunted with a really good walker dog one time, that the owner had to switch every time he turned her out,he wouldnt whip her hard at all mostly just fuss at her a little, but when he turned her loose she would knock a hole in the dark and usually be sitting under a coon the next time you saw her.

to be honest i think most dogs can tell a difference between a shock collar and a tracking collar.ive had dogs that would run junk when i didnt put the shock collar on them, but when i put the shock collar on them they was straight as a poker.lol

I am going to try him without the tracker probably a big mistake cause he has been known to go for miles also going to trap me a coon this week and see what happens I hope i can turn him back on like last year I love hearing him tree with his long roll barks but when i got to the tree he always got quiet and sat down at the bottom of it looking up he has not barked with the other dogs when they have treed this year just sat down and looked up

iam glad hes doing better. i think the best thing you can do for that dog is to hunt him as much as you can stand. hunt him around creeks, theres usually a coon wondering around hunting something to eat and their little paws will be wet so it should leave a good scent on the ground makeing it easier for your dog to trail. good luck with your dog.

Streak has came along real nice in the past week with just being hunted he hammered 2 trees friday night but was running from on to the other not sure if the further on out had anything in it or not but he ended up treed when i got him on the lead and treed hard with daisy when she came in and checked the tree he was on they both were echoing down the valley so loud my parents could hear them with the door shut and windows down and called and asked if we had treed the spot where they were from the house is about 1 mile I would say proudly we woke up the neighborhood

Good to read that your dog is improving. I may be wrong, but I have seen my hunting buddy whip his hounds for not hunting.

IMO, I don't think you can beat a dog into going hunting, they might stay out of sight and away from you.

i won''t whip a dog and i won't be around anyone whipping or kicking or otherwise hurting a dog. i think giving a kid a whipping is good if done with love and restraint, but i doubt a dog understands why they are being hurt.

I very seldom post on a dog training / problem solving thread as all dogs are differant BUT it reads to me like you've got it figured out now.

I'd say that almost 99% dog problems are caused by em not being hunted hard enough the right way and mine are included in this percentage.

you kinda answered your own ? on the 1st post when you told how good your dog was doing last season when he was being hunted up right. I've never seen any of my culls gain anything but weight by not being hunted. JMO
