Breaking the 15 minutes?

How long do they have to stay gone? What breaks it?

If mine stays around even long enough to get the fifteen put on them they are getting withdrawn and going home. It would only take a time or two of that B.S. and they aren't gonna live at my house anymore.

That's not the case here. Seen it happen about a month ago and the handler withdrew before the 15. Was just wondering because only seen it that one time in a little over 20 years of hunting hounds.

This is one of those rules where you better know the difference between UKC's rule and PKC's because breaking the 15 is completely different between the two. In UKC, the 15 is broke as soon as the dog leaves the cast. If you are running the 15 on a dog and it walks away from the cast, the 15 is broke. If it comes right back, you restart the 15.

15 minute rule is useless the way it is interpreted in UKC. As long as the dog isn't dead it will break the 15 in UKC.

Kind of what I was thinking. The dog I am getting at treed them like nothing to it on a previous cast. She treed coon on the way to the other dogs treed and won with a good score.

Maybe this is why you see so many that won't hunt these days, they can get away with it without being scratched

If my dogs are gone for 15, I would probably scratch. They are more than likely in the next county!!!!

I disagree Jim, I can’t quote were I read it but I remember Todd giving an interpretation. Saying it was a judgment call if the dog was out hunting. So if he leaves and comes back a minute later it is up to the judge to say if it went hunting or just walked the long way around the bush. There needs to be a more concrete way of ruling on it.

Well I tried to find the thread where Allen addressed it but I'm sure he said the 5 is broke anytime the dog leaves the judges sight.

What I meant by that is the dog seems to have to be walked across a track.

He might have. The guys at ukc are pretty good at being consistent on The interpretations, but sometimes they forget to consult each other.

I seem to remember something like that being said about the 15 on here a couple years ago. I remember thinking at the time that the interpretation they gave made the rule pretty much useless.

Rules do not give a specific time frame in which a dog has to be gone before the time is lifted for not hunting. We suggest so long as the dog leaves the cast and is not seen "not hunting" then it should be considered to be out hunting again.

Common sense suggests that just because you may no longer see the dog standing right next to the cast does not always mean the dog is back out hunting again. If there are any such concerns the judge may first need to shine their light around the area to make sure the dog did in fact take off and has not just found a good hiding spot. Otherwise, consider the dog as "making an attempt to hunt", lift the time and rock on! Hope this answers your question lost mtn.

Thanks for finding that. I take that as meaning if they leave sight the 15 is broke. Am I missing something?

That's pretty much how I understand it. If they leave your sight and you can't confirm them to not be hunting, 15 is broke.

That makes more sense to me, sounds like a good rule. 15 min. is a long time for a dog not to hunt, it's either sick or sorry. Ten minutes would make it a better rule.

Kind of brings up another question. Some like to say if a dog comes off the tree to meet you and puts their nose to the ground that they went back on trail, in order to be back on trail they have to be hunting. So if the dog comes in and sits down by the handler to get a few pats on the head, no doubt we would start the 15. Then he puts his nose to the ground beside the handlers boot, is he hunting? Is a dog with thier nose to the ground hunting , or just being a dog? It is also possible for a dog to hunt and stay busy, but never leave your sight.
