Need some help.Lately my 2yr old bluetick has preferred layups to trailing. Before she would do a pretty good job tracking lately she hits the creek with her head up sniffing around don't get me wrong she is doing a great job at it probably 8 out of10 she has the meat but do you all think she'll come out of it? any advice would be great thanks

I would just go with it-maybe it is a coincident that this is happening. Soon the coon will be moving better and she will have to run track again.

Thank's for advice I sure hope so my hunting buddy said could sell her to a cat or bear hunter as rigg dog but the family is to attached

It tis the season for lay-ups too. Alot of the time in snow coon are'nt covering that much ground and when thier pressured by the dog they go up that much faster. That might seem like a lay-ups, but the coon just tree right away. At least thats been happening a lot around here. I don't know what your weather is like there. If thier just honest to goodness lay-up coon and your dogs getting it done fast and accurate, then give em a pat on the head for me cause you've got a good one. My Patty dog is pretty good at lay-ups, but she'll drift em for a bit before she'll lock down. I've found her under apple trees off the wood standing on her hind legs with a coon directly above her on a handfull of occasions. Sounds like BS, but my friends Ton E., and Ken D. have seen it too. I really believe alot of people dont know what a layup dog is.I think some are just silent on track.Then when they do tree people assume the coon was laid up!I know I've saw a few that folks said was the best layup dogs.Cut them with a real hound and all they were was silent trail dogs.

If she is a true layup dog you better keep her.... They are invaluable this time of year when coon often times stay up for days at a time.. If she is hunting with her head up into the wind and falling treed, she is winding a layup coon.. Some don't know what a layup truely is....Alot of times you will see them standup on their hind legs testing the wind..........If you don't like it send her to Pittsburgh International Airport with my name and number on the crate...LOL LOL

Layup dogs are the most scarce item in the coonhunting game. The tree coon where there is no scent on the ground or tree trunk. They use the nose and brain to find the coon from air current. A good one will go into the woods, head in air, then go to ground if now layup can be found. Their mission is to "TREE" a coon.

Have owned 3, from same line that were good at it. Sometimes they may get coon scent from the air and go a long ways to a tree or maybe even go to and area and start to trail.

Have seen dogs accused of "babbling"where they might hold their head in air and go thru the woods "locating" and go a long ways and tree without ever trailing.

The best layup dog I have seen belong to Leonard Bishop. His Hardtime Swamp Amos dog smelled a coon from the air winded him from the lead strap and opened and when turned loose directly treed it a few hundred yards away. He look real good doing it. He is an awesome coondog.

our coons have been moving really early....5:00 sometimes....so it is kinda a lay-up when you cut em at 9....that ole coon has been up a while....the coons usually move again about 3 or 4...we get hot tracks then...most of the time the treed coons.....ones that have been down but go up quick will either move around or at least look...the lay-ups will be all balled up on a limb or in a fork.....they act like they dont have a care in the world...

last nite. Coon must have been out early in the day in the warm sunshine. Dog didn't do a real impressive job on treeing it but she did... I am spoiled, I have seen some real impressive layup dogs.... HUSSLER DAWGS...

Mike Trevis, I too had been hunting about 35 years before I saw a GOOD "layup" dog. I have owned 3, from the same line of dogs, It's a phenomenom, Don't expect to see very many. Even though a dog may be born with this ability, I think that it has to be somewhat learned and developed. Latest and best one I owned was 3 yrs old and picked it up in one season. I was hunting him on ridges over the river, trees were huge oaks w/feeding coon. Tops of the trees were about level with the top of the ridge. He began to catch scent from these trees and scoot down the hillside and find the right tree. He became VERY good at it, treed many coon that completely puzzled other dogs(mine and others). They looked for a track, none existed.
