Joe

I see nothing wrong with it. It is a way for clubs to get some people together that may not show or comp. hunt and raise money for the clubs. They have Bass fishing contests (big money) and big buck contests, so why not a Big Coon contest.

In areas where coon is thin, this can be a hardship on your coon population, it encourages people to kill more coon than is necessary in order to get the "big" one, so they can win...

The way we get them to play fair at the coon contest is to have a hunt and bring back and weigh only one coon. then after everyone is back or the dead line we draw a peice of paper out of a box to see if either the biggest or the smallest coon wins. We had a problem with people turnin cage coons loose that they had fed for a couple months while messin with there pups then shoot them out and enter them in the big coon contest so we had to throw a curve in there for them.

I said disagree

number 1, I can't hit the broad side of a barn, so I would never be able to turn a coon in. Number 2, I really don't enjoy killing the coon as much as I do hearing the dogs run them & seeing them in the tree, leashing up the dogs & knowing that the coon is still there for another night of hunting. This is JMO, you all might think I'm nuts, but this is the way I feel!

My club hasn't had a big coon contest since one of the old guys let slip how you could take lead fishing sinkers and......."supposit" them somewhere in the coon where they would be hard to find.

I don't think anybody wanted to have to check coons for that, lol.

skip told me about a guy that had the biggest coon one time that was frozen solid and it was 38 degrees he claim the coon ran through water and it froze in the back of his truck on the way back to the club so now they weigh skin only does away with the lead sinkers also
thanks for the pictures thay made my day

I agree with Mike. Big coon contest actually cause people to take more coon. We try not to thin our population so we can run them again! lol

Some "coffee shop" coonhunters and I used to always have a big coon contest with everyone chipping in a buck and the winner taking all. Spot light coon, road kills, even dead pet coon were allowed. I still usually won because I took over 100 coon a year over my dogs and several of them were fairly big coon.

even if you allow only one coon to be brought in, people will still kill several, tryingto get one they think will be the biggest......

Mike

You guys bring up a good point, I never thought about areas with thin populations. I guess it would be the choice of the club, I am all for conservative measures. In areas of high coon populations let the club vote on it. We are lucky to have some good coon numbers but small sized clubs so not a lot of participants. Several good ideas though. Thanks!

Poundage hunts

They have a poundage hunt here and there is no telling how many coon get killed because of it. Between the entry fees and calcuttas the pot will be between 4 and 5 hundred dollars. They changed it towhere you can only bring 2 coon in and the winning weight is drawn after the deadline. This helped the killing some but now they have a seperate pot for the biggest coon so here goes the slaughter again.

Any kind of hunt where weight is involved will cause the contestant to shoot every coon he trees that night so that he has a chyance to win the pot. If he trees 3 in one tree - guess what - 3 hit the ground. I just think that way too many coons get shot for this kind of event.

im all for it yeah a few more coon get shot. But atleast you have to be packing a hound that can tree a coon. Most of these nite hunt dogs cant even tree a real live coon on there own. Notice i said most.

I've hunted one. Turned me against them. One team said they shot 7 coon lol. Which it was their hunting spot..So it really didn't matter. I like the idea of drawing later to see if big coon or little coon wins. At our club. It would draw lots of folks you never see at any hunts or buddy hunts. Might not hurt to have a couple a yr.

I think this question would probably make the coonhunters of generations goon by turn over in their graves.

Im pretty sure that the sport of competition coonhunting didnt start out with scorecards.

I don’t see where any good comes from it. I could care less if someone has a dog that trees a bigger coon than my dog did. I guess it’s fun for some people. I’m more interested in how my dog trees a coon rather than how big the coon is. JMO

well in my area most private land you hunt you either shoot em all out or dont come back. We have so many coons we couldnt put a dent in the population if we tried.
