Stuff happens at your house and at mine. I wouldn't jump to conclusions and think foul play right off the bat or go trying to sue the guy. If you didn't first inspect where your dog was going to be housed and under what conditions I would say you are part to blame. Not saying that the trainer has no fault but you should have known upfront that your dog would be staying in a dirt pen and that there was a risk involved with that. Just about anyway yo house a dog there is at list some risk of them getting out. I once started a dog for a fellow when He came and dropped off the dog I showed him where the dog would be staying and actually physically placed the dog in the pen when he was there visiting with me. Well about five minutes after the fellow leaves the dog starts to freak out about being left and literally jumped up and over my six foot tall welded wire kennel and lit out of the driveway at full speed headed for home. Luckily I was in the yard and saw the whole thing happen. I hopped on a fourwheeler and chased that dog for over a mile and a half before he stopped. Right away I called the owner and told him what had happened, we both decided that we had better keep him on a chain instead. Long story short the dog and I came to terms and by the time he left he was doing an outstanding job and the owner could not have been happier.

My advice is go visit with the trainer and see what he is doing to locate your dog. Check out how he escaped and call all of the local animal shelters. Yes there are some scammers out there who will sell your dog or not take care of them but most guys will take better care of someone elses dog than they do their own. Before you drop a dog off with trainer have them give you a pretty good list of references an check them out. Ask questions about how your dog will be housed and physically investigate the situation when you drop the dog off. I know it sucks but stuff happens. Dogs dig out, chains or cables break, dogs get lost, or hit by cars. Everytime someone lets a dog off a leash whether it be you or a hired trainer that dog's life is in a pretty signifigant amount of danger. If the trainer trully was negligent or stole your dog fine go ahead and burn or crucify them. But if it was just a freak thing and they really did all they could to insure your dogs safety well then swallow that painful pill and move on. I sure hope your dog turns up safe real soon. Best of luck.

Take someone, especially your attorney with you and take a ton of pictures of everything.

Blow this guy up on here, post his name, let everyone see how these guys are treating the owners. Second post this week jamming up trainers.

The biggest question I have is why you are communicating with this trainer through PM's??? That should be atleast a phone coversation. I have taken in a couple dogs to train and always always always get their cell and home number and give them my home cell email and alternate number for them to reach me at anytime. If they accept text messages i send a text EVERY day and if not i call them every 3 days with updates and to answer any questions they may have.

My other question is did you check and see what kind of kennels they had? Or check referances?

Dont get me wrong im not saying he is not to blame just trying to get a better idea of what you are dealing with

Surely you have a good idea of whether or not this " trainer" is telling you the truth , if not you didn't know enough about him to eave your dog there with him. I can't see leaving one I care anything about with someone I didn't trust to begin with.

I have worked dogs for people and for the most part had satisfied customers. The only thing I will say is while working someone else's dog I find myself more careful about where I board them and where I hunt them than I am with my own, not to say that I hunt my own just anywhere or their boarding arrangements are insufficient but someone knowing their dog is being taken care of is worth a lot! In the case of an accident or freak occurrence or stroke of bad luck, I would definitely hope that people would realize that it is just what it is, not negligence! I work hounds mostly for people I know and I don't do it that often anymore but when I was doing it a lot I had a list of reputable references, and had no problem with someone checking them out!

First you would have to prove negligence. Did the guy actually do something wrong or is this just a risk that you take with hounds?

Probably 10 years ago I sold a dog to an out of state fellow. I had two others out of a line of walkers that were unpoplular around here but very popular where he was from. So he was going to sell them for me for 25% of the sales price. I sent zerox copies of the papers and kept the originals. A week later I called him and he told me the female had pushed the gate open the night he got home and he had not seen her since. I almost said good riddance myself because she would go and go till she almost saw a coon I recon, but she always ended up with a coon somewhere. Alot of people like that kind of dog but I hate them. About two weeks later I called to check on the Big nice male. He told me a fellow came the night before to try him out and lo and behold he was dead in the pen. Now this was a three year old.

Well stuff happens. But pictures would have been nice. A call from him would have been good instead of me calling him. I have always been suspicious. Would zerox copies serve as a way to get replacement UKC papers or would they have to be false papered?
You wouldn't mind naming the State your man was from would you?

I would rather hunt my dog one night a week a know what it is doing and under what circumstances it is doing it then have someone else hunt my dog 5 nights a week. If a trainer has 4 or more dogs to hunt each week and they promise to hunt your dog 5 nights a week chances are there hunting them with other dogs there training. That's a chance I am not willing to take I would rather have my young dog out one night a week singled out then 5 nights a week with hounds I no nothing about. Just my opinion.
