There was such a time...

When a good possum dog was of great value to a family. In those times these hounds ment survival to a family that was doing all the could to stay feed, warm and dry. The meat was eaten the hides were sold or traded. This secured a place in the family for a possum dog. He had value and He was well cared for. And he most likely was a cross between several breeds which mattered very little because the ability was what made him valuable not number of Gr.ntch. In his background. Today the possum and the hound who will run them are undesirable. For what reason I don't know, not many people today would or have ever eaten a possum and not many people have or would eat a coon. I'm proud to see a picture where a guy has a wall full of carefully skinned coon hides ready for market. But it makes me sick to see a ditch full of coon shoot and dumped just cause someone's dog trees them. Might as well be hunting possum. I think I may train me one quality possum hound for myself.

we were just just talking about that yesterday.thought we would train one just for possums . figured why not. just as fun in my mind. as long as the dogs arnt runnin a deer and get treed you still get to heir em going and that is the best part of it any how. jmo

You can also hunt possum on a smaller acreage. But then you think about coon that haven't been hunted they tree pretty quick for a little while then they go to stepping out further. Maybe this is also the reason with possum treeing quick. Not being ran for sixty years or so makes them easy treeing. Looking forward to the upcoming possum season.

I was talking about possum dogs this morning. While I wouldn't feed one. They do have a strong point here I think. See we have 10,000 ac parcel of land right up the rd. Now we keep coons pretty thinned down BUT possums eat turkey eggs to!!! A few yrs ago. Some young guys come a long with some good ol tree dogs I call em. Whatever they come across they tree and these guys shoot and have a blast doing it. They killed 100 possums in 2 yrs or so. Now that's big numbers! I honestly can tell it in the turkey population the last couple yrs. I've never ate a possum though but I might buy me a treedog or train one just to keep these things under control up there!

POKE SALLET - PUT IT IN SKILLET TO WILT IT DOWN, A LOT TURNS INTO A LITTLE, SO BE GENEROUS!! THEN BEAT SOME EGGS IN A BOWL, SEASON TO TASTE,AND SCRAMBLE THEN INTO THE POKE SALLET, WHEN THE EGGS ARE DONE, SERVE IT UP!!! SOME PEOPLE ADD ONION OR BACON, WHATEVER FLOATS YOUR BOAT!!!

POSSUM- CLEAN IT UP GOOD, REMOVE A BUNCH OR THE FAT, BAKE IT IN TIN FOIL LIKE A ROAST!!!

i've been letting my dogs tree possum since i started 13 yrs ago. i used to shoot all of them. i got sensitive to that and just started shaking them out or just letting them be. i've been wanting to try eating one for a long time. i've got to build me a little chicken coup to put them in and feed them a while. then i will eat them or at least feed them to the dogs.

i dont think possum climb so easy because they arent ran....they just simply aint built to run.....

i wont forget last fall...living down in NC...met a buddy that had deer dogs...cutting them loose and WANTING them to run deer....i laughed...all these years i ran dogs that werent allowed to run em...then there i am turning a pack loose just TO run em....

to each his own....i dont wanna see no slick tailed possum up a tree

I have thought about training one to target feral cats. There are enough of then around here to tree a few, prolly be about like treeing coons in Ga so I' guess I'd need me one of those Wipeout pups.

By golly you'd need a walker for sure Jim. I've treed a few feral cats. They run like a deer. Faster then any coon you'll chase. Gotta apply heat to em to make them climb.

I had one a couple years back, but mine wasnt particular about them cats bein feral. after you have to retrieve that dog off a few front porches with a dead cat and a mad cat lover kinda takes the fun outa the chase.

i don't mind treeing a possum every now and then. i got one here now that if the coon are not moving she will slam a possum. i never shot one out to her and i have never beat her off of them either. She is a really nice coon dog, but on them dry hard hot nights and the coons are slow, she going to show you something lol. Maybe i should knock a few out to her. heck she going on 6 and i can't count the coon and squirrel this little cur dog has showed me. Might just let her have a blast these next couple of yrs and let do what she does....HUNT.

that's what I'm talking about. Let her hunt. You still get to make a tree and have fun. And hey if the economy fails and you need some food possum is plentiful.

I remember back in the mid 80's my brother got me a 1/2 black & Tan and 1/2 Walker. She treed just as many possum as she did coon. I was 13 yrs old and hunting off of a big red 3 wheeler, having the time of my life. One thing was for sure....you was going to a tree. Never remember her missing much. They was always SOMETHING in the tree. Then i got me a registered walker and every thing changed lol. I have had some good ones and some bad ones. I have found myself putting so much pressure on dogs they never learn how to really hunt. Now that im older, and a touch wiser, I have more fun now than ever. Not because I am happy treeing just anything. But i have learned over the years to let a dog develop and learn to hunt and handle. Im a little more patient now and hunting is all about , my kids and the dogs. Im not into chasing to many trophies or titles like i once was, Im just HUNTING.
