Show Dogs

I am new to the whole show dog thing. I have a female that I have been showing. I am being told that for her to be competitive at the big shows, I should quit hunting her. Why is it that so many show dogs are never put in the woods. I know in the rules it says that signs or marks of hunting should no be held against them but I am being told it will be. What is everyones thoughts?

I don't know why someone would tell you that, hunting them keeps them in condition, develpos that great muscle tone they should have.

I have heard that several times. And it is true I think, how many hunting dogs have you seen win AO best in show. Not to many that I know of. Or the World Bench Show. I would just keep hunting and showing. I am thinking of putting my hunting female in AO this year she wont win but I enjiy competing in shows with her. Just enjoy the dogs and the sport of coonhunting and showing and water races and treeing contest we have so many ways to share our passions/obsession for these hounds......ENJOY IT

show dogs

I dont think they should be allowed to be show champions until they win a HTX title or night champions either for that matter this is a hunting breed and before they get titled prove it im tired of the hype about show champs and grand show champs JMO

I think all dogs that enter the show should have to be put in the hunts otherwise you end up with one breed taken in two different directions wouldn't we all love to have a GR Ch GR NITE dog. So keep hunting your dog the reason alot of the show dogs dont hunt is because people have bred ite hunt out of them. Just my opinion

One thing a lot forget is the breed standard is set for two specific reasons. It is NOT to make show dogs! It simply is set to state characteristics of a breed as a whole that 1 separates it from other breeds and 2 defines the things needed to be able to function as it was designed to do. Which is hunt in the case of coonhounds.

My respect goes out to those who take the totality to heart. What good is a dog that has the drive to hunt, yey has to limit hunting due to having to be pulled out 5 days a week because structure is poor and the dog cannot physically do what it was bred to do more than once/twice a week?

Who cares if you have a GRCH that doesn't hunt besides show people? Who cares if you have a GRNITECH that would get excused off the bench due to DQ faults besides the hunters? What is your preference?

There are a lot of dual grands out there. Those are the dogs who have beat demonstrated their worth to the breed standard in its entirety.

Why should one have to choose between hunt and show? The breed is not just a show dog. The standard sets breed traits and structure it needs to be a separate breed and states what structure it needs to function as a coonhound in the woods.

If you have a dog that fits the breed standard and has the drive to function as a coonhound...why not do both if you enjoy both? Versatility is not a bad thing!

You may never win a big show, who cares? You may do some winning in the dual grand class.

Don't limit yourself to one side or the other. If you have a dog that fits the breed standard in its entirety...flaunt it! Take your dog as far as you two can go in both venues. That is what a total dog is! That is what should be looked at as breeding stock. You shouldn't limit yourself or your dog to just one title or another. Go after what it is you and your dog can do and like to do. It IS YOUR dog, YOUR time, and YOUR money!

Showing your dog does NOT negate it's ability to hunt.

Hunt the heck outta that dog if she will. I wouldn't take the opinion of someone that told you not to, just so you can show her. If you have a great looking dog and it hunts, the better your chances are imo.

Most show dog lines won't hunt or will just barely. Reason why many don't get hunted.

And YES I said it.

jk 123 if you want to hunt her then go for it. Scars due to hunting injuries are to be disregarded.

My neck of the woods has a problem with wolves. One fella not far from me lost one or two dogs to them. One wolf grabs the front and the other one the rear and they literally pull the prey apart. Not a pretty picture, some of the clubs have closed from the wolf problems. Why subject an animal you claim to love to wolves?

if you look at all the show dogs that win at a national level you will see most of them don't hunt. So as far as the breed going in two different directions I'd say it already is to a point. I think if you wanna win at that level you can't hunt them. I would never stop hunting mine but if you look at it seems to be going that way. The thing about them not being dinged for hunting scares and such sounds good but really if you seen two dogs on the bench and one had a cut ear and the other was picture perfect witch one do you think is gonna win assuming they both were built the same as far as structure goes.

There are no two dogs built identical enough to have to boil down to a scar. As a judge, you'd find another fault to make your choice for which one to pick. A scar is never a fault or something that I'd even consider looking at in my decision. If a judge is actually doing this, shame on them.

And this scarred dog showing convo has been discussed so many many times.
