Try hunters special 26/18. Same stuff pretty much but Cheaper. Black gold has went way to high for what it is. I fed the black bag for 10 years and swapped. I was skeptical about swapping but its worked out.

Fed Black Gold for years and really liked it. Just seemed every time i bought it price went up a dollar. Switched to feeding The Pride 26/20 Orange bag and am very satisfied. $7 cheeper a bag helps too.

Diamond Naturals Extreme Athlete is all I feed my coonhounds right now, but if I was to look for something in a different price range I'd use Pride instead of Black Gold. We alternate between the orange and black bags of Pride for the deer pack, and like it a lot. I've only used Black Gold when I won it, but it didn't do much for my dogs. They're all different though, of course...

I feed the black bag 26/18 as well. Excellent feed and little waste. Another reason to feed Black Gold, is the fact that Black Gold is not afraid to support the hunting dog sports. I feel it is important to support the businesses that support us.
Adios,
Gary

Any more, I think this whole dog food thing comes down to two types, feed with cereal (corn, wheat, soy) and feeds without cereal.
You got Diamond Naturals, Native, Victor, Taste Of The Wild, Blue, etc without cereal and you got Black Gold/Ultra Advantage/Purina/Pride/ Sportdog/etc with cereal.
I believe the most significant difference between dog feeds today is cereal/no cereal. I don't think there is a dimes worth of difference between BG/Ultra/Dog Chow/ Pride types of feed. Other than price and availability. Chose your poison.

Yes, the Diamond EA is 32/25. I use it year round, haven't had any problems in the heat or such. My big male dogs are staying in shape on no more than 3 cups a day of it during the summer.

Mr. Jim, I somewhat agree with you there. I prefer a grain-free feed for my coonhounds simply because I've had a couple that seem to not tolerate corn well. I can only take about half of my hounds with me when I leave for work every week, and my significant other isn't a big fan of having to feed different dogs different feeds....so I just found one feed that worked for them all instead. It's not to say some of them wouldn't do just as well on the Pride as the deer pack does, but I guess as long as I can afford it, it makes me "feel" better to feed them the more expensive feed LOL.

They should be able to support us. In 8 years or so its went up 14 dollars a bag!!! Pricing themselves right outta business. That's where they are headed.

All feed has gone up as the cost of ingredients have. I don't care if you are feeding cows, horses or deer. The feed companies have to make a profit or Black Gold cannot support us. Example, shelled corn that these deer hunters feed here in Texas was bringing $4 for a 50# bag three years ago. At the present time, the same 50# bag is selling for $10. Makes the jump in dog food prices look pretty small.
Adios,
Gary

JiM,

What is the difference between cereal (corn, wheat, & soy) vs. Whole Grain Sorghum, Rice, Oats, & Barley? Call it cereal or call it filler, all dog foods seem to have one & it is one of the top three ingredients. I guess folks perceive some of the fillers to be of a better quality than others. I am ignorant to the pros & cons of these fillers. Maybe someone could offer some insight on why some fillers are better than others.

If you Google "dog food analysis", you will find that in fact there IS a big difference in the cereals. Some are far better than others.
