Independent coon dogs

I have a buddy that has a GRNTCH Walker female that is all coon dog by herself but when hunted with another dog she is so independent that it is stupid.
For example she will not,no way back a dog on the tree and I know she has never ever been whipped for backing anothe dog.My dog is not titled but is coon dog by himself or with company. My dog will back her then the GRNT leaves the tree, coon in the tree.My dog a Smokey River bred Bluetick takes lead on a track and she'll quit it and go find her own.
What do you think about the super independent dog?
Personnally I think some dogs are too independent.

Glynn

I LIKE EVERY THING YOU SAID ABOUT THE DOG BUT LEAVING THE TREE WHEN BACKED. I HAVE A 6 YEAR OLD THAT WILL NOT TREE WITH OTHERS IF I WALKED HIM TO THE TREE. HE HAS NEVER BEEN WHIPPED FOR BACKING EITHER. HE STARTED THIS IN THE COMP HUNTS THE NIGHT HE MET MR FANG.

I like to hunt with her by herself but when I bring my dog along my Bluetick will tree 3 times and have a coon while she fiddle farting around trying to get by herself. My son hunted my dog in a hunt in South Carolina and he said a couple of the dogs in the cast were too independent like my buddy's Walker. My dog won the cast and placed fourth in the hunt.

Suites me for them to keep on breeding those independent fools till they get so fool to what you are talking about. But I guess at that point the accusation will be my 1 yr old 35 lb female ran that independant gater off the tree by backing. LOL.

Sounds to me like a dog I would have loved to had when young and could be corrected ...I love the not backing....noo reason for dogs to back ...and the leaving part can be fixed with a good trainer jus like anything

A deaf, dumb, and blind dog might be trained to play pinball, but he can"t be fixed.

She was started by herself and she has always been like that. She has been gotten on to for leaving when a dog backs her but the more you get onto her the worse she gets.

some can be fixed but some cannot.....but she did something right somewhere along the line to finish to Grnitech.

My thought is in the time it takes a dog to Cover or back another dog,, they could have treed another coon somewhere else of their own..

dont get me wrong if my dogs strikes a track and works it and something falls treed a little bit ahead of it and my dog comes in and Finishes the track it started , thats fine. I want them to. But dogs are out there to compete with the coon and not with another dog and when you get pack dogs, thats all your getting and thats where mistakes are made. If dogs tree together more than a couple times a night , if you pay attention there is always one dog doing most the work and the other one is following!!!

the only bad thing about a 100% loner is they go by the rule of "Live by the Sword , Die by the Sword".

I believe most can be corrected, alot more work than most would like to put into one though. I've had two that were naturally that independent, one male that I never had on a tree with another dog till he was 16 months old, then he went to he would only tree with another dog if he struck first, then to backing on some but wasnt just following a dog around waiting on it to tree.

The second a little female that is just as the dog described above. Treed alone she was there till you got her but if another would come in to back her she was gone or came back to me. I could walk her into a dog treed and she would act like she didnt smell anything. Alone would tree coons stay and was a fun to hunt. Had to many irons on the fire and wouldnt have done her any justice.

That is not independence. It's called unsociable and it's nice for competition hunting but it would sure be a pain if you were going to hide hunt the dog 30 nights in a row.

The other kcs that hunt for thousands of dollars are full of tree backers.... some of you that reply on here need to get out and hunt all kennel clubs to see what wins and what it takes to win. I had an unreal female when I forst got into the hunts made her a pkc champion and a grand nite ch in less then 6 months. She got to the point where if something backed her she would leave. She was getting old and was getting more timid with every day I had to get rid of her. A dog that leaves when backed is not exceptable and very hard to break but if done early sometimes it can but it will usually come back to bite you at the worst times. A dog that backs is not exceptable to me either. There are to many coon to be treed. Everyone has there prefrence but I will win far more then ill lose with a dog that will not back and I will kill way more coon when season starts when I cut my 2 dogs and walk to 2 trees.

For many years big game hunters have had to rely on coonhunters to keep them supplied in top quality hounds.I'm afraid the coonhounds today are so competetion bred they couldn't be given to a big game hunter as a gift !!! I just don't think the big game Boys would want a dog that can't run over 100yds. without treeing slick trees. Don't think they want a lone wolf type dog either. If things continue with coonhounds over the next 20 yrs like they have gone the last 20 yrs. the only way to get a dog that is a real "hidedog" will be to buy our pups from big game hunters. Lets hope They are doing better with our bloodlines than We are !!!

I don't usually reply to this type of post, but wow the replies I have seen have me scratching my head. First off did anybody notice in the original thread that the dog that started the discussion was a Gr. Nt. Ch.? Sounds like she is doing something right-so much for all the nay sayer posts you see on here by people saying Gr. nt. Ch. dogs don't actually tree coons-since she doesn't me too, it sounds like she trees coon and lots of them. Yet we have people on here that would shoot her-what the heck? You want to feed and hunt a pack of dogs to do what one can? I bet most of the people saying they don't like this type hound are the same people who look for major hunt winners when they pick a stud or pup. Ever been to these major hunts and actually study what type of hound it takes to consistently compete with the big boys? I have, and from my observations, the big hunt winners are the dogs that get away from the pack and tree their own coon. No, these may not be for big game hunters that need a pack, but we are talking coon dogs here. Independence is a fine line it is true. It is a bad thing when a dog leaves when another dog comes in and it is aweful nice to have a dog that will cover if a red hot coon is struck and treed right off the leash. But no dog is perfect, they ALL have a flaw or quirk you aren't going to like. I will take my chances hunting and breeding the independent dog and training it that it is ok when they come to your tree and back you, way before I will follow a pack of coon hounds that act like beagles and leave their trees and or tracks just because they heard another dog open up somewhere else. To each his own I guess.

She is great by herself and I've seen a lot of coons with her but she is so independant that when my dog strikes a track she has to go hunt in a different direction.
Don't get me wrong, I like an independent dog but I also want one that has enough sense to pack when needed.I guess I feel that way because I bear and coon hunt.I just think her independence is a little to extreme.

One cannot where I hunt. Many people believe they have One that can but it only exists in there imagination. I would be more than interested in seein One that can on the coon I put One on. Not stumbling around out there somewhere aand treeing a popup. I know it is a long way but bring One down and show me. I have puppies to tree the easy ones with by thierself.
