Permethrin 10% - Anyone Use This?

I was reading the label on Permethrin 10% (permethrin is the active ingredient that vets recommend to be in any flea product you use). It is labeled for use on dogs for flea and tick prevention and is applied every 28 days.

Just wondering if anyone has ever used this.

Yes, it is cheap and it works great. Get the concentrate, only about $12 - $15/qt, and mix it yourself in a spray bottle. It is also a good conditioner for show dogs. Just use it after you shampoo. You can also spray yourself before you go hunting. It will keep Ticks, mosquitos and flies off. A qt bottle of concentrate lasts me about a year.

Glad to hear that others have used it. I picked up an 8 oz bottle of it for 7.95 at Rural King...that will last a long time here. What I also like about it is you can also treat kennels, beds etc with it (at a stronger concentration).

Package diluting instructions say for 8oz dilute with 12.5 gals of water (for treatment on dogs...it's stronger for kennel treatment). I cut that down to fit into a 1 gal container that I can refill my spray bottle with so the dilution I used was 1/2oz to .87gal of water.

It's a very inexpensive flea/tick prevention ! Thanks for all the feedback.

Yes, if you are having a flea problem, you can use it in a 2 gal sprayer and spray your whole kennel and dog houses. It works in a variety of applications. It is also a great fly spray for any horsemen out there.

Cynthia, I just re-read the label from the bottle I bought. It doesn't say anything about preg/nursing moms. As with any topical, I'd be careful.
Frontline is safe for preg/nursing moms (I know that because I called them for a client when I was working as a vet tech). But I still play it safe and don't use anything that could potentially cause problems with the pups.

Thanks to everyone for all the info on this product. I got 8oz @ TSC and mixed 1oz to a gal and sprayed it on my dogs yesterday. I'm not sure if this is to strong or not, haven't seen in ill effects in dogs so far so good.

I was having trouble with the fly instead of the flea, and it works. I have used the fly bags in the past and they worked really good, but a couple weeks ago I was in TSC and they had a little gadget that you put in the top of a milk jug. Mix the lure with water and hang the jug in a tree, I was thinking heck this is way more cost efficient than the bags...It didn't work, I even doubled up on the lure, still haven't caught a single fly, it’s been 2 weeks. Think I am going to paint the jug, maybe it is scaring them somehow?

Majestic Tree H, I am not sure I understand how you are using this as a spot treatment. Are you saying to "mix 2 oz with a gallon and then apply 1/2oz per ear or 2-4oz on face or 12-16oz along back line then repeat in 2 week".

If I am understanding this right I think I will like this method better than a spray bottle, just pour a 12-16 oz of the mixture down the dogs back, right and it will get into the dogs system and keep flea's, ticks, and flies off?

Has anyone come up with a weight to dose app.?

I'm just an old country boy and a bit slow any and all help is greatly appreciated.

I've used both and the Perm is better IMO. The Bayer gets fleas pretty well , but doesn't do the job on ticks for my dogs. Perm will kill BOTH ticks and fleas.. The Perm is prescribed for use on dogs , the Bayer is NOT for what thats worth.

Be sure to follow directions for dogs listed on the 10% perm.. It is posion and should be treated as such and respected in its use on dogs.

The only downside to using perm is that is is a little more aggrevating to use. I use a squirt bottle and keep it out of the eyes of the dog. I've even used the same bottle on my chaps and it seems to work pretty well for ticks.

The topical drops are MUCH easier to use such as Bio spot , Frontline etc. , but the perm will work and is alot cheaper.

Thats my experience with it. Hope that helps.

in searching for the tree & shrub stuff, I came across Permethrin 36.8% that is labeled for flea/tick use.

anyone use this? I got some of the 10% and mixed per label, but doesnt seem to be working. wonder if I could increase mixture.

We've tried Bayer and did not have very good success. Still noticed fleas/ticks only hours after applying.

We're gonna try the Perm 10%....
