Rides at a nite hunt

just got to vent about something but want to get some opinions about what goes on at a nite hunt. At a recent nite hunt after we drew out one of the cast members said he needed a ride. Well I was guiding and we going to ride about an hour so I didnt want to have to come back if I had to so I did not want to commit to give ride. Well another guy finally agreed to give him a ride. Well I won the cast so I took the guy back since other guy lived about another hour and a half away from where I hunt. Well I find out that this guy is getting paid to hunt this dog and he just doesnt want to spend no more money than he has to during the hunt. I think UKC needs to make up some rules saying that people should have to provide their own rides at the hunt. I know its a big help when you have a minor that cannot drive to be able to ride with someone but parents shouldnt allow that either, I mean they should be repsonsible for their kid. I mean it would be one thing if people needed the help but this guy getting paid to hunt a dog then burning my gas and not offering to pay at all has just pissed me off. Anybody else have any opinion and what we can do about this? Thanks for your time.

I see your point. But when i Guide a cast out of OUR CLUB i always offer to take 2 people and 1 or 2 dogs(I never put another dog in with any of mine if i'm hunting that night) . And when i go to another club, if i know the guide or someone else we always try to truck pool when we can. The point with our club is we always try and get as many people to the woods with the least amount of trucks as possible. And also with gas prices going up more and more people are riding 2 or 3 deep to a hunt and when you draw cast out 2 out of 3 will need a ride. I don't want to chase anyone off from our club due to not having a ride and if i'm going that way in my truck they don't owe me a dime.

It is the person huntings responsibility to have a ride. Period. If no one has room they are SOL.

i made a similar post a year or 2 ago...

i too cannot stand it....like you said, someone not old enough to drive, GREAT jump in!

but, ive had guides tell me i absolutely HAVE to ride with them...

and had guys in a cast beg for a ride till someone gives in...

i dont think you should be allowed to guide if you cant have 4 trucks along...park me on the road and i'll jump on the tailgate...but, i travel and all my supplies for me and my dog are in my truck...my snacks..my drinks..my first aid supplies, tracker, spare light, spare boots, change of socks and clothes etc etc...dang if my dog didnt get cut that nite..pad bleeding bad..one guy gave me EMT gel which was very nice of him...but, the judge wouldnt take me back to my truck so i could get her home and cleaned up!!! i was fuming..i will absolutely never be without my truck again at a nite hunt..period..

its also not my problem you showed up to a nite hunt without a vehicle!!

times are tough and blah blah blah..but, you got money for the entry fee....pay the gas money for the hunt as well! its part of it...i know every hunt i goto im looking at a 200mi trip average..i know that and expect it..sometimes more sometimes less..but i expect it and if i dont have the gas money i wont go! when we goto bigger hunts and travel farther, we take as many trucks as we have dogs going...that way we all have a ride..

if i drove a full sized truck id have no problem offering a ride..but i dont...i understand its a nice thing to do..but dont ASK for a ride...

i have this point of view because guys that ask for rides often live closer than i do..or are hauling spectators ontop of themselves and their dog..and if you watch, many of them lock the truck their stuff is in and they are just being cheap...i know many guys drive far and 2 buddies goto a hunt and take 1 truck..but ive seen it many times..they leave their own truck there and its still sitting in the same spot when we get back..

always been a touchy subject with me lol...sorry for the rant...i just cant stand it...

not being mean...but if your over 16 dont bother asking me for a ride...when my dog gets hurt or scratched or the nite is over and im not going to the club house, im going HOME..only time i goto the clubhouse after a hunt is when i got a CW or a question...

if i guide i will take you back if you dont know the way...other than that im going home..

UKC DOESN'T need to make any rules about this. You don't have to haul anyone, nobody has to haul you. That is the law. I always assume I'm going back to the club so it don't matter to me if I have a rider or not.

Where my dog goes..My truck goes..Now its fine with me if somebody rides with me but they must remember..If we call time out and have to round dogs up or something..My dog is priorty number 1. I cant haul but one in the front seat..Can haul the whole cast if they want to ride in the back

I guide but I try to cut down on vehicles to respect the land owner but if they all want to drive thats fine the other night I hauled 2 cast members besides me and 2 of there spectators so we only took 2 trucks

My Friday night cast at walker days a man needed a ride everyones looking at their feet I happily said you can ride with us we rode an hour and a half away. The guy offered to buy us dinner gas money he was thankful and a very nice man at that. So we made a friend. His cast the next night refused to hall him he had to withdrew before leaving the grounds. He had driven with some friends of his 12 hours away I see why he didn't bring his truck saves gas with three buddy's going I went to a local club me and my grandfather had our own truck but he insisted we ride with him didn't know the guy ether I think it's common courtesy to give someone a ride. But some people don't wanna get mud in their trucks or scratches on their tailgate I understand not wanting to put two dogs in the same box side though

Maybe its me but i think it is unsportsman like to not offer a ride to someone if you have the room.

I know many times i and some buddies have drove a few hours to a hunt and car pooled. We never had a problem.

Honestly I think its sad that Fellows hunters wont help each other out more. Maybe they are afraid the other mans dog is better than theres.

what about this. i drive 1.5 hours to the hunt. where we are hunting is 45 minutes back towards my home. if there is no cast winner and no one else is going back to the club house, im now expected to go 1.5 hours out of my way to the get the person back to the clubhouse that i gave a ride to. all this when its already getting late. ive done it many times, but it sure is hard for anyone to do this no matter how good of a sportsman you are.

Hunts

Here's you one. About 8 years ago I was hunting in a big hunt in Indiana. The guy who was guiding us was a well known registered A-HOLE that hunts blueticks. Anyways after I won the cast the A-Hole wouldn't tell me how to get back to the club. I finally made it back to the club with minutes to spare and collected my win. I told the master of hounds what happened and his reply was ' Old Ron he don't like to lose, HAHAHA!!!!' It's not a good feeling to have this happen to you in the middle of nowhere.

This pretty much says it all. UKC is not gonna get involved in telling people whether to give or not to give people rides. For me its simple: If I like the guy I will give him a ride and not except a penny. If I dont like you guess you better go ask someone else. Last time I checked my name is on the title to my truck.

Ride

I will gladly give a ride, but it always seem to be the same ones needing a ride.
I will NOT take your money for gas, but a rider should say at the end of the night 'can I give you some gas money'

I say hop in don't worry about your boots. Smokem if you gotem.
Don't spit your snuff in that bottle that's what the floor is for, besides it covers up the smell of the s#!+ I stepped in. I appreciate when people offer to pay for gas and I don't get upset when they don't ( hell I've missplaced my manors and forgot once or twice). Either way I won't take money for gas. And if your dog outhunts mine I'll probably buy you a cool drink and your dog a beef jerky on the way back to the clubhouse.
That's the way the the old boys that got me into this, taught me.
I just hope some day I can pass that learning on to another youngster wanting to be a coonhunter.

i made a post about this last year and got bombarded for it. i agree if you are old enough to drive, have some sort of ride at least 90 percent of the time. i see the same people begging for rides time and time again. it gets old after a while especially when you have no reason to go back to the club other than dropping them off.
on the other hand, kids are a different story and i will take every kid on the cast just to see them go.
