What was the first dog you competition hunted.

For me it was a walker female i got from Ronnie Herald,YADKIN RIVER CRICKET was her name. She was sired by GRNTCH.YADKIN RIVER CRUISE her dam was NTCH.HERALDS MISSY.She was a decent dog but i only got to put her in a couple hunts, someone poisened her on me.This was probably around 1997 or so when i started competition hunting.

Come on guys and gals lets here them first comp. dog tales

Hooper Ridge Joy was the first dog I comp hunted. The year was 1977 or 1978. Very good nose, absolute pull pressure, but a close hunting dog of about 20-30 minutes by herself.

Joy was off of Mayles Beech River Dolly who was off Bussards Beech Wood Man, who was out of Beech River Sputnick. Joys father was a local dog called Zeb, who was a grand pup of Kirkbrides Blue smoke.

Freddie Kirkbride (local coonhunter from this area) owned the smoke dog. Freddie was friends with Mr. Eddie Ross, owner of Mountain Music Blue. Freddie had bred a female to Blue years before I got to know him. I believe His old smoke dog was a grandpup or great grandpup to mountain music blue.

I can still hear Ole Freddie telling me the story about the night he went and hunted with mountain music blue. I remember him saying it was a cold moonlight night in December, and Ole blue used a big bawl mouth when trailing the coon. Fred lived up into his ninties but has long since went to meet or lord and savior, but I'm proud to still be hunting the same line of dogs Freddie had worked to build all those many years ago.

My first comp. hunt was 1965. Hunted a grade Bluetick named Jr. Was my first comp. hunt and it was for the North Dakota state championship. At that time MN. did not have comp. hunts. I won, was about 8 or 9 dogs in the hunt, mostly grade dogs. Jr. treed the only coon seen and I was the only one that came in with plus points. I thought "this comp. hunting is easy." I found out thru the years it wasn't as easy as I thought. LOL!

My fist competition hunt was at Autumn Oaks in 2007 with my old male dog Bo. Bad night but managed to get a cast win with 25+. Never entered him in another hunt after that. He turns 8 years old today.

I've said before and stick to it that the 3 worst dogs that I ever drew out with in a hunt were in this cast with Bo. They treed possums, squirrels, slicks and on the first drop 2 of them ran about 3 circles around a big cornfield wide open and only quit it when the third one fell treed on a possum. Bo split across the creek from the cornfield with his first coon on that drop and I thought we were going to have a big night. Bo somehow managed another coon that night but did take minus for backing on a possum. I took 4th strike all night, the other 3 dogs would strike wide open as soon as they were unsnapped.

my first was a male black and tan he was a track driven machine he would track with the other dogs and when they would tree he would turn and run it backwords he would do this all night long if you would let him. I turned him in to a bear dog and he done great he was my first hound. Since then I have change breeds and now hunt Walkers.

great storie guys, keep'em coming.

nice story virgil. one of the worst hunts i had was at a larger hunt also. it was walker days in greencastle,in. i was hunting my panic dog when he was a ntch. one guy was like 65 another was 18 then there was the guide and me in the cast. first drop all dogs split. mines got a den, guide has a den ,the kids dog is slick, and the old guy wants to argue that we go blind on him.after that he minuses out,the kid wants to argue with everyone and my dog and the guides dog goes down to the wire but i got beat by 50+.
after the cast is over the young guy starts arguing that we cheated the older gentleman and him all night and tries to pick a fight with almost everyone there.it was a pretty exciting night if you ask me

my 1st competition hunt

was the 1st registered dog i ever owned. a young walker named barney. 1st off he was a conterfit but at that time i thought the world of him because i finally had a registered dog. i was scared to death but ol barney got in the country a pretty good ways & to my surprise he got treed. he was treeing real good when a pack of foxhounds come over a hill & just about run over top of him. couldnt believe it he stayed treed when a straggeler foxhound come over the hill & went by barney it was more than he could stand. he pulled off the tree & it wasnt but a short time he was leading the pack. he might have lost the hunt but he showed them fox hounds & thing or to about running a fox !! LOL

My 1st COMP dog.

My first competition dog was/is my GRNITECH Female, Belle. I got flat out lucky with her, from the time I bought her. I paid $50 for her when she was about 5 or 6 months old.

She taught me how to tree a coon on her own at 10 months old before I knew how to! lol I figured she was pretty good at it, and treed coons most every night I took her, so why not try a local hunt?

The second hunt I entered her in, she won the whole dang thing! She won another 1st place not long after that and we hit a drought for a while making NITECH.

She made NITECH just under a year later before she was 2 years old. By that time, I was convinced she was good enough to beat dogs in other states! So, we started travelling. She finished to NITECH with a 2nd in Ohio at a local hunt. She came back from 300- (partially due to me being an amatuer), in early March with about a foot of snow on the ground to finish with 500+ at the end of the nite. She got 2nd.

Over the next year, we travelled all over the east coast and mid-west to UKC and PKC hunts.

Since we started about 4 years ago, she finished to GRANDNITE before she was 3, she has scored over or near 1,000+ a few times, placed at 3 or 4 Purina Events, won her casts at several breed days and BIG hunts.

I more than likely learned more from her than she did me. She still makes me happy and is my #1 here at the house. I have gotten several offers to sell her, but she's staying right here.

Overall, she suites me, whether she won 1 hunt or 100! I will always measure dogs using her. She's one of a kind. I got lucky! lol

First dog I competetion hunted was NiteCH PR' Longcreeks Hardhitten Jake. He later finished to grand in UKC and another KC. I won a 4th place with him when he was hunting registered casts and also won the 14 & under PKA NC State Youth Championship in 2001 with him. He was owned by Mr. Joe Dellinger and Patrick Lowery. I credit both these guys for getting me into coonhunting and thank them alot for it. I later had the oppourtunity to own a younger brother to the Jake dog which was my GAGE dog and I did some competition hunting with him also. Good line of hounds.

My first competition dog was a finley river bred female. Had over 200 ukc points but could not get a 1st to make NtCh. Scored 900 one night and still got 2nd.
