Hunting him with other dogs will help him range out more but he may never hunt wide by himself. Most dogs will range out more as they get older.

Lead him out until he knows that you want him to stay with you, then and only then should you use the training collar. Start by letting him drag the lead while you keep him under control, then remove the lead.

It sounds like you have the makings of a nice hound.

if he consistently trees coon and knows what its all about. i would introduce him to your foot and let him know your going to introduce your foot to his ass. some dogs you can get the picture, others will just disappear but arent really hunting. depends on the dog.

Those do not sound like issues! I like a dog to check in every 10 min if nothing is happeneing. Also I don't lead my pups out of the woods till they are 7 ot 8 mos old but you should start and plz dont kick him in the butt he is still getting used to you and it is an experience thing. As he builds confidence and learns what the routine is he will adapt. On the other hand I will not tolerate a lazy dog then I encourage them to leave!

By the way what is his breeding?

Well , heat up his rear will help him hunt deeper IF he understands that's what you want .... the trick is ... don't whip him when he comes back . Go to a new place and send him on and just be patient and consistant about letting him know you don't want him to come back.

Whipping them for coming back and trying to re-send them usually causes more harm ... they'll run in there and bump trash , start cicling behind you to the road or truck and stuff like that .

If you can be consistant and firm on an issue ... and the dog understands what you want ... 99% of them will want to please you .

Leading is easy ... dog's just know whoever is in front is the boss , that's just how their mind works and you can't change that .

Get a switch and make him stay behind ... no need to shock him , make a cinch with your lead or pull on him ... just teach him to stay behind you and wait for you to cross fences and all that stuff.

Cowdog trainers deal with smart dogs trained to a high level ... they never let the dog walk in front ...

Sounds to me like he has been trained that way. I'd hunt him by himself and try to encourage him to range farther. Let him know you are not going to run off and leave him in the woods. Most likely he will go deeper if he knows you want him to hunt that way.

Its best when training a young dog.To only hunt them on good nights.Thats not to cold...When hunting on bad nights,real frosty or snow chances are they will start messing with off game.Like possums, deer and other game that will move when a coon wont...After a dog is well broke you can hunt them anytime you want......Your dog sounds like alot of young dogs his age.Thats been messed this cage coon to much.Many dogs will hunt close after doing that..If you keep hunting him he should do a lot better the more you hunt the dog......

Ive got a little walker gyp that is 17 months old and she never really hunted deep but she keeps getting deeper and deeper every time i take her. just keep him in the woods and he will figure it out.

i agree with this..

find a large woods and find you a seat,,sounds like dog dont know you well and is checking on you,,once it knows you arent going to leave it ,it'll start hunting out longer..
once it realizes you arent going to move while he's out hunting till he starts barking ,he''ll hunt farther out and longer,,

find you a log and take your coffie with you and just sit in the one spot when he checks in ,pat him on the head and tell him go "huntum up " .

after he knows you arent going anywhere ,you will be able to hunt him from the truck,,

its a trust issue..
since he was walked hunted before ,he will keep checking in till he knows you arent going to keep moveing on him..

if you have a very large area you can hunt where you can get the truck off the road away from main road way back in the woods ,,

you can just sit on the tailgate and he will learn you arent going anywhere and start hunting longer each time he goes back out

sounds like you will have a dog everybodys looking for once he builds his trust issue that you arent going to keep walking ..

i'm one of the first people to put a boot in a dogs rear for doing dumb stuff ,but the only thing wrong with this guys dog is building trust in that he will be sitting on that bucket till the dog strikes a coon..

the dog was trained to walk hunt and will keep doing it if the owner keeps moving around in the woods while he's out hunting

sitting on that bucket till the dog strikes is the only way the dog is going to start hunting out deeper and longer..

at this stage putting a boot in the dogs rear is going to undo the dogs trust in his new master...nothing wrong with the dog that a little sitting on the bucket time wont cure...

if he is going 10 min 100yrds what ever. take him back to
that spot and turn him loose do this a couple times you
got 30min dog.you start kicking him in the back side
you might wished he was a 10min dog.

I have to agree with Wildbill and Blackwater Pete on this since I have used the method myself and know that it works. Sorry, I don't agree with the "Butt Kicking" method.

10 min dog

he will probly get better just keep hunting him when he comes back just tell him go find him dont pet him if he dont go just start and move a little he still young he probly get over it with time as long as he trees coon i wouldnt worry to much if you pleasure hunt thats all you need a lot of dogs that throws dirt in your face just runs through the woods till they run across a track they really not hunting like a slow close hunting dog but thats what a lot of these guys want that hunt in the nite hunts only way they can get there dogs tilted if they hunt close they not going to do anygood in the hunts but seem like thats what they breed for anymore for dogs when you turn loose you find them with a tracker 2 miles away jmo i dont know every thing you cant kick and beat a dog and make him go deep probly just going to screw him up make him scared of you and not hunt at all for afarid you going to kick and beat him when you take him hunting good luck

Bill , I don't see anyone saying to stomp your dog ... and if you have ruined dogs by trying to train them before .... then maybe you just aren't a dog trainer anymore than your Redtick is a deep hunter .... facts are facts.

But no matter what kind of dog you are training .... a dog must both fear you and love you in you're gonna train him to be his best ....

Most folks search for the answer they wanted to hear from the start , making it silly to have asked in the first place .....
