coonhound chronicle 4

to heck with the roman numerals, and i do no what IIII means. it means , I I I I, me and my dogs. man, oh man, oh man. life is the greatest. man oh man. especially when you think you have a "thorn" in your side and your dogs deal you a deck that you cannot lose against. where do i begin with my night,
ok, i usually tote my dogs in the durango with me, they only load on one side, i have the leather seats down and they are very comfy. except for me, the unmistakeable smell, OF GAS. and i am not talking about petroleum products. so, I step on the gas. lol. to get to where we are going. thank goodness, no messes. since the earlier conversations, i , mighty kelley, was not so mighty. self doubt all of a sudden. and then some advice came into my head. AND I ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF MY NIGHT WITH MY DOGS.
i never turn the pup loose until we clear the corn field and get to the wheat field. because, there is a sheep pen very close by and other coon dogs chained up, and by the time we work our way around the whole 5 million acres, swamp, river, etc. the pup knows better than to even mess with them. too tired out. well, tonight was very, very different.
i put my light on, got my backpack full of first aid and what not, got the gun, put the mag in my pocket , remembered my phone, put the camera in too, turned the light on. thank goodness i still had the pup on a leash. EYES. not the kind when you talk really loud they take off. not kiddding you. EYES. green , that follow you. now mind you, i am on a good stretch of land. they are on the river bank. EYES. so what do i do? try to put a bead on them with the scope to no avail. cant get it in, hat falling in my face, light beam reallly low, have to perfect that one. so, plan B. call my husband and talk really , really loud. eyes follow to the back 40. pup has since ripped my arm out of the socket wanting to run with my mix. so i figure, turn him out, 2 against whatever. or 3 depending on how fast i run against them. didnt run. figured have to be a man about this. had a person tell me today, there isnt anything out there at night that isnt out there in the daytime. WRONG. she suffers from night blindness. no kidding.
anyhow, we get to the bottom, a long , long way off, and sure enough, EYES. I knew we were being followed now. time to get serious, ditch the backpack and be prepared with the 22 mag i brought. ok. i got eyes in the field and finally got whatever it was in the scope and fired a round off. ah hah. not really. the pup went crazy thinkin i had something, then he taught me a lesson. see the pics. he actuallly after about 5 min. after the shot worked the trail to a big old tree and sure enough. COON. COON. IN CASE ALL THORN BUSHES NEVER HEARD ME, COON. took me forever to see the sucker. good grief. the wind was in our face on the walk back, i always check the wind. but he got it. oh yeah.
got him on a leash cause i figured, i cannot shoot, spot everything, and run camera at the same time, actually, need a better light. to tell the truth.
anyways, he and the old man are needing some water , so i take them to the river thinking maybe we are far enough away. away from what you ask? away from the deep ole bark that was non stop exactly the opposite direction from hence we came. here the pup had taken off again, gonna need a garmin now, and had something else treed. big ole possum. no kidding. took him off of that. and called it a night. end on a good note. better having a 50/50 night than no night at all.
lessons learned today, just because you watched children of the corn, does not mean there are children IN the corn. just because you watched, the hills have eyes, dosent mean everything is out to get you. especially the EYES. when the corn stalks talk to you, better listen. that means, you shouldve checked the weather channel before you left the house. lol. lightening, rain. gained 7 degrees while i was out. completely overdressed. \
I went out a little uneasy tonight, and came out completely happy and giggling with my 2 dogs and a knapsack on my back. and not to mention, a husband that was worried #$%^#$ less. oh well, good thing i took the phone, he at least heard him baying before i said, gotta go, he has something.

thank you sooo much, man, what a feeling, especially when you think the pup you are training? is beside you and you hear a loud voice in the wind saying , heck no, i am over here. rather break him off possum on a 50/50 night then to not break them of anything at all. my jaw never hit the ground so hard tonight. i thought i had two ringtail in 1.5 hours. so be it. i love my pup.

THE POSSUMS WILL SIKE YOU OUT SOMETIMES FOR SURE. BUT THEY ARE MOST ALWAYS ON THE FIRST LIMB.

i looked and looked and found it, not on the tree in the pic though, way way up was the one we wanted. in a crook of a big limb. that dog wouldve climbed that tree if given a chance. that possum was low. easy to find. got him off fairly quickly, with a scolding, but not too sour.

IF IT WHERE ME I WOULD ONLY TAKE THE CAMERA WHEN SOMEBODY WAS WITH ME. AS FAR AS SHINEING I TAKE MY BUMP CAP OFF AND HOLD IT IN ONE HAND AND SHOOT WITH THE OTHER. AND THERE IS A BRACKET THAT YOU CAN JUST SNAP RIGHT ON TO YOUR GUN BARREL AND YOUR LIGHT WILL SNAP ON THAT BRACKET.
I HOPE I CAN SAY ATLEAST ONE THING TO HELP YOU OUT .

Way to go!

Shining and shooting is pretty easy. Just do what Greg said. No need to leave the camera home when your alone just snap a few pic's before you roll the coon out and then when it hits the ground grab it and snap a few more.

I'm confused. What was it you shot at that was following you? A coon? I'd be real careful about just shooting at eyes in a field that are following you unless you know exactly where all your dogs are. Maybe I just read it wrong. Here is the statement I'm referring to.

i got eyes in the field and finally got whatever it was in the scope and fired a round off.

Ok. I was taught to never shoot at anything unless i knew EXACTLY what I was shooting at. All I'm saying is that I would be real careful with shooting at a set of eyes. You do whatever you want and think is right.

just an idea that i do...get a small camera pouch that can attach to your light belt and carry the camera in that...take ur pics put it back in holster and then shoot ur coon...also put a sling on ur gun and throw it over your back so no camera to carry no back pack necessary and both hands free...or just get a new coon hunters vest...pockets enough for everything u could think of..and then some

dog is lookin good...not sure how far u are from me but ur welcome to hunt here anytime...ENGLISH STYLE
