Todd? slick or circle answer

Todd , It seems that the most questions at the hunts are wheather Is it slick or circle? Is the answer one of the game finders? If the thing can find a dead bird in the brush, cann`t it find a coon in a leafey tree?At the least, if a reading is found it would give the spot to concentrate your search. Can it be used in a nite hunt? Not to decide slick or not but as a tool to help find the coon.

Well at this time you can't use them. I don't know what the future holds. I have never seen one of those things work and not sure how legit they are. Is the problem that we need another electronic device or we just need to be honest?

gamefinder

i just dont understand why things like binoculars or the gamefinder are not allowed. they do not help the dog or handler get the coon treed.seems to me anything that helps determine which dog does the best ought to be welcomed with open arms. most everybody has binoculars and the stance that we dont want to make the sport cost prohibited doesnt hold much water when we are allowed to use shocking and tracking systems that can cost a thousand dollars.let alone the dog that a man can spend 10,000 on and is allowed to guide on the property he owns or rents to really give him an advantage if he chooses while the boy next door hunts culls and has to hunt on public ground.

I think it would be an advantage...

I'm sure that several of you have been on casts where there has been someone "Not see the coon" to keep themselves ahead, or to keep someone else from winning.

This would eliminate that, and the 3 agains 1 vote on wheter or not the coon is there.

So should there be a list of acceptable scoring aids and those not acceptable? Electronic squallers, mirrors for den trees, smoke bombs for holes in the grounds, etc.? Just asking. Throw it wide open or just say your light and your own two eyes?

How do they work? How much does it cost? It could be a advantage if only one handler had one.Have you ever been on a cast were you forgot your coon squaller and one cast member has one but wont use it unless he has something to gain. I could see the same thing happening here.

OK, Todd, I see your point...

Shoot. Leave things like they are. If you allow those game finders, soon someone will be wanting to allow infared night visions scopes, and then lord knows what else.

Things have worked good for years like they are, leave a good thing alone.

After all, it's not that often that you get someone that wont see a coon.

i thought we already had a list i knew we where allowed to use squallers

you dont like electronics? or new technology? whats the difference between using a tool to help you squall or shine to see a coon than any other that helps you accurately identify one. nothing worse than standing under a tree argueing about that dark clump up there when i know i could be absolutely positive looking thru a $25 pair of binoculars.

I dont have a dog in this hunt but I guarantee a FLIR camera would eliminate any doubt about a coon being in a tree. I think it would be neat. But I have hardly ever not been able to find a coon that "was" there.

We would all like to think this is how ppl operate in ukc hunts, but anyone that has hunted in one knows that is 100% not the case!

FLIR operates by producing an image of the heat signature of the animal in the tree. And yes it will pick up anything that is warm blooded or anything that is warmer than ambient.

I'm not usually one for a lot of change but I do think we are well overdue to allowfor scoring of trees binoculars to score trees. These folks are not asking for Google Earth to zoom down and tell us if the tree is slick, possum, turkey etc. They are simply asking for a set of binoculars of not more than 7 power that can be purchased for 25-35 dollars that will help to clarify the difference between a dark shadow on a limb and actual coon hair ( partial shoulder/hip etc) sticking up above the limb, or the difference between a hole in a knot or just a place where a limb has broke off.

This minor adjustment would help to improve the accuracy of scoring all dogs plus reduce the number of arguments about den trees vs slick trees or coons plussed vs circled.

Most (if not all) hunters that use a scope on their rifle will tell you they used the scope to find a coon one time or another that they would not have otherwise been able to find had they just been using the naked eye.

Therefore I must go on record advocating to allow binoculars (and anly binoculars) for scoring of trees. What would be the downside to allowing this minor change???

i think if ukc change rules and allow a panel to go out and score a tree on a question. then you wouldn't need all these high tech gadgets to see if that is really a coon up there. or a not or a hole. it better be what the majority said or else someone or some people will be getting a vacation. but to each his own. hunt what you like
