Dog food? Summer vs. Winter

Do you guys feed different feeds in the summer as to winter? If so what percentage of protein and fat do you use in summer and what percentage do you use for winter?

SPORTMIX

This winter I fed 24/20 and now I'm feeding 27/12. In the winter they stayed plump but not out of shape, and now when the dogs are getting hunted they are built like race horses.

Mine get the high protein Sportsman's Pride during the winter, and the lower protein "maintanence" formula during the summer. I just lost a dog not long ago that wouldn't function as good on a higher protein diet when it was hot outside. I was told by the vet that the high protein caused her body to heat up more than the lower protein feeds. When I fed her a lower protein feed she didn't get as hot while treeing, would hunt harder, and hunt longer. That was just what I observed from her....others I've had in the past didn't seem to make a hill of beans what you fed them the hunting results were the same.

For over 36 years, the same feed all the time. The quantity changes as the temperature does.

I found that I have to feed quite a bit more during the cold winter months living the mild climite of (not so mild last year) TN. So I usually try to stay with the same brand but go to the more expensive higher protien and fat.

Since you stay with the same bag year round how much more do you feed during the winter months living in MI?

I too am wondering what would be a good formula to try and use to keep dogs cool as the summer temperatures approach? Not sure if any studies have been done on this or if there is any scientific information as to the higher the protein the hotter the dog or vice versa and or the fat content?

Lee,

We use a Jif Peanut Butter 2 lb Plastic container to feed the dogs. Summer we feed 1/2 a container. Hard hunting, fall, winter we feed 3/4 container. During extreme temperatures we will feed an almost full container.

i've always fed the same feed year round but last summer i started feeding old roy to try and keep the dogs from heating up i like to keep my dogs about 5 lbs under weight during the summer seems to be easier on them when hunting ( i hunt 5-6 nights a week) i got this idea from walk with wick and it seems to hold true high energy = low leaning: low energy = high learning plus the dogs seem to chew less on the low pro food. i don't do this to try and be cheap cause i care greatly for my hounds. i do this to try and keep them the most comfortable and performing at the highest level.

I live in S/W WI and I feed Sportmix and I know a few other guys that do as well and have good luck with it. I go to a Kent feed dealer, and get it there. Sportmix offers a great variety of protein to fat ratio mixes. I'm still playing around with them seeing how the dogs react to them, like I did last winter switched from 26/18 to 24/20 and the dogs seem to look healthier in the cold temps. Not tryin to be a salesman, but just speaking I'm not unhappy and like I said, they offer great varieties to see what meets your dog's needs the best. Happy Hunting!!

Jim,
I've never tried Ultra Advantage 24/20 but had been feeding Diamond 24/20...Do you have any experience with Diamond 24/20 if so is there much difference between the UA and Diamond? or anyone that has experience with either for that matter?

If you feed a good food , one with real meat that doesn't swell when wet .... then you got that part handled.

You can't keep cool in the heat ... all you can do is climatize your dog and keep them in shape and toughened up .

Alot of how a dog gets is genetic ... in their density and build , some dogs retain more heat than they can get rid of because of being to bulky or thick in the flank and such... they got a name for it .

A good way to tell if your dog is in shape is to watch and see if they take water while hunting .... a dog in shape shouldn't take any water during your first few turn-outs , and still very little when you are done .... if he is , you haven't found the right feed or feeding schedule yet.

Steve the feeds you mentioned are ok. There are better brands than Diamond. I have been feeding the Enhance brand and feel very satisfied with their product. I have fed all the feeds you mentioned. Every post on this thread is correct, including the lower weight on the dogs during the summer. I like to see a little rib and a touch of backbone showing however they must have good muscle tone and show zero hip bones. When you see hip bones they are underweight/improper feeding.

Anyone can take any feed on the market today and if you give proper care to the dogs they will look and should operate just fine. BUT there are difinatly better quality feeds than others.

Thanks Larry I thought we might be on the same track and we are.

its almost impossible to keep a dog cooler with changing dog feed i have tried it for years and they stay the same, almost all your dog feed use CORN as a filler, Corn will generate heat in dogs, if you switch to a fish based such as salmon it seems to help, BUT me personally i cant afford $45-$50 a bag every 2 weeks so they will just have to get hot LOL

The Diamond Extreme Athlete has been pretty good ... no corn and such in it , I just mix a small bag or Purina One , ProPlan or Canidae with the bag of Diamond.

You can do the same with Dog Chow or the regular Diamond ... you'd be surprised the difference in stool and coat quality just from mixing a small bag of the good stuff in ..

I've got two dogs ... and a bag of Extreme Athlete is $30 ... the small bags of ProPlan and such are $20 .

That mix will last me a solid three weeks ... so I get to hunt all i want , raise pups or whatever for $15 a week in dog food.

I feed 32/25 year around. I feed less in the summer than winter. Anybody that has been told or believe that protein makes a dog hot has been misinformed! The reason your dogs are getting hot is they are out of shape! I live in the warmest part of the country in SE Al.

What brand do you feed in the 32/25? what is the price as well?

I have fed Purina Dog Chow for over 20 years and I never change by seasons and my hounds are as fat as butter ball turkey's... However I do increase the amount during the winter months. Changing feeds can irritate the digestive system always mix a full bag of the old with a full bag of the new when changing over...

I always feed Ol Roy Maximum during the winter and a Purina feed during the summer(warmer mnths), I started as of last fall with Purina Beneful Healthy Radiance, its 25% protien/12% fat. Have to look at the Ol Roy Maximums percentages when I get home since I can't find it on the internet.

fed eceed 30/20 in winter to the dogs i was hunting hard.

i feed sportmix 21/12 to dogs in summer and add wild alaskan salmon oil to their feed. they look emaculate on the sportmix with adding the fish oil. it improves their coat and helps with allergies
