WORLD CHAMPION GRAND NITE CH. HARD TIME SPECK

Speck was a Registered Treeing Walker that was transfered to the English breed because of his coloring.

Hard Time Speck was born raised and trained in Jackson county in south eastern kentucky if i am not bad wrong, and they are hunters in that area that still hunt the Hard Time bloodlines i only live about 20 miles from that area and Calvin Hayes i think was orginally from that area and quiet a few of his people still live there and still coon hunt.

Ed Bates told me Speck was pretty much silent on the track. So, I reckon those Kentucky boy still hunting Speck bred dogs are probably hunting still mouth dogs. LOL.

I wonder how he passed the English breed standards test. The English breed standards call for an open trailer.

Oh man, you will never change! It's history now and a lot of REALLY good dogs have come from him and have him in their background. Let it go, for heavens sake. What does it matter, they were all one to begin with. I've hunted with quite a few Speck bred hounds and trust me, they weren't silent by far!

I won't change my mind about a silent trailing Walker being single registered as an English. He could have stayed a Walker and damaged that breed.

hardtime speck aka mike

it could have been finley river mike, i don't remember but the mike part i'm pretty sure is right. i hunted with him when russell wagers brought him in this country. i'm pretty sure he was a nite champion maybe even a grand nite. everybody always said he was the only dog in history to make grand nite in two breeds. he was a hard wide hunter that gave little or no mouth on the ground but would slam treed with the grease 90+% of the time. good mouth good disposition. hunted with him 6 to 8 times. real wide, makes me wonder how we did it back then with no trackers??? this is just what i remember.

Rat I have to agree, Fox no doubt you hunted with the same dog. Just a few facts you can take to the bank, not what ole so and so might have said.
1. Reg as a walker- Yes, a very ticked up one but yes
2. Transferred to English - yes, who wants a walker dog covered with ticks? We have other breeds for that
3. Hard Hunter - yes, thats what is desired as well today by most.
4. Tree Dog - Deluxe, thats what made him, most folks like one to tree, young dogs that are tree dogs make stud dogs then as well now.
5. Rough - not even a little, hard to find tree dogs that don't know anything else is happening.
6. Reproducer - thats why the KC has kept records, there are many great reproducers, but numbers are kept for a reason.
7. Still today after 30 years I stil see the name Hardtime on many stud dogs as well as winners. My guess would be they like what they feed and thats all that matters. I just would like for the younger generations to know that he did have some impact on the many english dogs we know today. Not by any means the only one but did have a lot of impact. I will leave this promise with those in doubt, mankinds biggest fault will always start with a J and end with a S. Do you see any signs?

I'm sorry I lost my train of thought, I never heard of another name. As far as I know he was GRNT Hardtime Speck and GrNt Hayes' Hardtime Speck, I will do a little research on that one. The other point I forgot was the silent one.
6a. Tight Mouthed - yes, definately by the standards of that era, by todays standards nobody would probally say much. He would fall in the country treed about 50% of the time. He would open a few times here and there about 25% of the time. He would open fair the other 25%, not going to bore you by no means at any time. Most pups opened much more than he did, I always thought he was smart enough to catch one when possible. Some may not like that trait but I personally do, brains suit me most of the time.

First of all, everyone knows what I think of Speck. My comments are about the dog and I have no ill feelings toward anyone associated with him. In fact, I have some very good friends that are Speck lovers.

Does anyone know anyone that has any Walker that has Speck in the pedigree? If he was a Grand Nite Champion Walker, why didn't the Walker people breed to him? There may have been a reason.

I know there is likely some old time Walker guys on this board, the Sailor bred Walkers I hunted with were cold nosed, open trailing dogs. I was young when they were popular and didn't hunt with a lot of them but can anyone explain to me how a dog out of a strain of dogs known for their open trailing and nose produce a dog that was hot nosed and mostly silent? I do remember those were the days way before the DNA testing and a person could go to any trade days and buy papers to fit any dog cheap. Any dog that could tree coon often had "papers" put on them in those days. I am NOT accusing anyone of any misdeeds, I am just telling it like it used to be.

I am a true believer in the English breed standards and I always try to meet the standards 100%. The breed standards call for an open trailer. It is not being met in a lot of cases these days, guys are winning hunts with still trailers. Read some of the threads on this board about still trailers. There are a lot more hot nosed, pop up, silent trailing English these days that do not meet the English breed standards and I think some of tham can be traced back to Speck. If the English breeders want silent trailers, they should change the standards. If UKC is going to allow silent trailers in the hunts, they should change the rules.

I have nothing againt silent trailing hot nosed pop up coon dogs. Most of my Mt Curs are just like the dog Scott described. Am I going to cross them with my English? Not a chance.

My true color is Redtick. No doubt about it. Anyone that knows me knows that.
