It was explained to me by a conservation officer that it is illegal to let a dog go from the time period between April1 - July 15 anywhere because the kittens are vulerable to being caught on the ground. Somewhere on the DNR site it says something about training dogs during the quite season is illegal and the conservation officer explained that encouraging a dog to purse a targeted animal during this time is considered "training".

april 15 - july 8th is the quiet time..
you can run dogs on private property ONLY, if coons have or are about to do damage.... whatever all that means, coons aint doing nothing if they aint doing damage.
Click on Dog Laws for a copy of an official review from the DNR. I will have a lamintaed copy I keep in my truck.
The clincher is doing or about to do damage. Damage can be crop damage, building or barn damage including stored straw and hay, corn crib damage, blue bird box damage, bird feeder damage etc. The biggest thing is be on board with the farmer that he wants you there taking coons. Also, this will not work on small parcels. Once you step off the property with permission you are subject to a ticket.
Guys this will work if we remain smart about it and don't try to push its limits!!!!!

Does anybody know what the fine cost is for running during quiet time? I heard it was 50.00 as long as they didnt catch you with a gun, it would get ugly if they did.

I talked to Frank Giddings a couple of years ago, and he told me the tickets were incremental. They went up with each ticket issued.
I would imagine he has been ticketed a few times and would probably know, nobody hunts harder than he does.

well, I guess I will leave the black ski mask in my back pocket in case my dog goes out of bounds! so what I am hearing is that you can run as long as their is damage, but cant carry a gun? what do I kill them with a stick. shoot if I get caught by the farmer without a gun any time of the year, i am in deeper trouble than by a c.o.

ok, I read the letter, bang away on the private land, the trouble with this is most of the farms that I hunt, they are so busy, that if a c.o. stops there work for even a minute on my behalf to ask them if there is damage, I will get booted, believe me the c.o. here digs for info and dosent let up

there was a guy around me last summer that got caught running beagles during quite season and it cost him 500.00 bucks. dont know if they fined him per dog or what but i know the ticket was for 500.00 bucks. larry knows more about these rules than me but i figure if you cant show th C.O. where the damage is it probably aint going to be good for you and if your nuisence coon hunting you better have a bang stick with you if your hunting from april 15 to july 8.

Larry thanks to you and Jim for all the work you guys have done. But I have a question. If I am out hunting during quite time do I always have to have a gun with me? Reason I am asking is because I think I would have a hard time trying to tell a C.O. I am killing coon with a sling shot.

Tell your C.O. that the regs read "doing or ABOUT TO DO DAMAGE". Kind of hard to show damage that was about to be done.

Too many grey areas, loopholes, and interpertations. I called the DNR and was told that because red squirrel is open all year that I could use my squirrel dog to hunt them all year. As long as I was not just training the dog. I never took them up on it.

14.4 Private dog training areas, director authority.
Sec 14.4 (1) A person shall not train dogs on private lands from April 16 to July 14 or post their lands as private
dog training areas unless they receive written authorization from the director or the director's authorized
representative upon an application form approved by the director.
(2) It shall be unlawful for any person to make a false statement upon the application form authorized in this
section.
(3) It shall be unlawful for a person to allow dogs being trained on private lands, as authorized by this section, to
go upon lands not specified in the application form.
(4) It shall be unlawful for a person to allow dogs to be trained on private lands, as authorized by this section, if a
written complaint of trespass by an adjacent landowner is found upon investigation by the department to be
legitimate and the department so notifies the applicant and the applicant does not fence the area in such a manner
that dogs cannot exit the area.
(5) A person shall remove any posted signs authorized by the director at a time specified by the director.
Ya, got to love legal talk. You request an application form from DNR. You have to either own the land or get permission from the land owner. The Director of your local DNR Office has to approve the request. You have to post the property and follow all requirements. I am not familiar with all the requirements.

Quite season
Would someone mind clearing up this whole thread? Is it legal to hunt during the quiet season, April 15- July 8, on private property. Or does a guy have to carry a firearm to every tree in order to be able to say that he was getting ready to shoot a coon that was "about to do damage."
If you turn loose on a piece of property that you have permission on during crop damage season and get over on another persons property can you still retrieve your dog?
I tried to read some of those legal documents and they got me more confused than I was before hand.
