Our running season change proposal is now in the public comment stage. It is extremely easy to show your support if you really want this change.

-----------------------------

http://www.in.gov/nrc/2386.htm

Click the drop down menu and select: “Raccoon & Opossum Taking/Chasing”

You will see this:

Fill in all the blanks, as shown in the example and click submit. You can add in your organization, put “none” or type “citizen”.

Now, e-mail this link and call every one of your friends and family and ask them to do the same.
-----------------------------

If you belong to an organization, we need their sign off to show support. Have the Club President or Board Chairman sign and date the letter. Please contact any conservation clubs and or other sporting groups in your area for sign off, the more, the better. These letters should be mailed to the HTDA PO box shown at the bottom of the letter. We will make sure they get to the IDNR.

I commented even though I'm from South Carolina.
I commented that we have had a training (no take) season for about five years and thanks to it our old dogs stay in good shape and our young dogs progess faster. I knew of no violations and they were welcome to contact SC DNR for their comment.

Hope that helps!

The HTDA and Coonhunters all across Indiana appreciate those that are taking a few minutes out of their schedule to support this long awaited, much needed change.

We have ten hard working board members behind the scenes that frequently put their lives on hold to look out for your interests. When you see them, please take a moment to thank them and ask what you can do to help. Chris Powell-Dillsboro; Jerry Moll-Batesville; Jeff Morgan-Milroy; Brad Hall-Danville; Don Bonsett-Walton; Brent Miller-Versailles; Liz Dice-Connersville; Mike Goodpaster-North Vernon; Steve Burkholder-Angola; Nick Erny-Huntingburg.

Our opposition is banking on the presumption that most Coonhunters that read this will not take five minutes to voice their support for the extension of the running season.

I would like to know a little more about how this process works. When does the public comment phase end? When do they finally decide? Who does the deciding?

Jim, thanks for the questions, they are good ones. We don’t know exactly how long the public comment period will last, probably less than two months.

Public comment will be accepted until this proposal shows back up on the meeting agenda of the Natural Resources Advisory Council (NRAC) http://www.in.gov/nrc/2334.htm . The NRAC will look at the public comment and any other information made available about the proposal and either recommend or not recommend the change to the Natural Resources Commission (NRC) http://www.in.gov/nrc/ .

The NRC will then put the proposal on their next meeting agenda and they will choose to approve or not approve the proposal based upon all public input, the recommendation of the NRAC and any other information made available to them. If the NRC gives its final approval at this point the proposal will go on to “final adoption” and become an official “administrative rule” for publication.

I personaly am not in favor of tradeing off a week of trap free hound hunting for a couple weeks of running season.
I have several places I hunt the first week of take season and then its no longer hound safe because of all the snares and traps.

I know the arguement about how unfair it is to the trappers to allow the hound hunters to take game a week before the trappers, but I always figured those traps working 24/7 and most hound hunters only hunting several hours a nite offset any unfair claim.

I am a bit surprised , maybe even a bit puzzled, why this wassnt brought to our attention by the HTDA.

We aren't trading anything and you were informed at the beginning of this thread. It is listed in the proposal.

The Trapping was added by the DNR not us. They want more coons taken and they added it. So there was no "trade".

As far as agreeing with the trappers being out there, they are already out there! Fox and coyote trapping starts Oct 15. Big legholds and snares. If you haven't had a problem yet, you won't now.

Last thing, I refuse to sound like one of the obsessed deer hunter who think deer hunting is ruined by coonhound running. I bet we all hunt all kinds of places with traps and snares and you just don't know it. There are a lot of misconceptions about trapping.

mr. rowdy, i wassnt born yesterday, ive been follerin hounds since the 60s.
im betting you havent taken the best young hound you ever hunted out of a conibear. I have and now am extremely trap shy.

not a problem, i know how politics work, and know i can either deal with it or leave it but i dang sure dont have to like it or fall in line and not voice my opinion.
the next time you dont want my opinion just say so. I didnt realize you had to be a indiana c.o. to have an opinion, but its not the first time ive got that impression.

I guess i assumed a change in trapping season would be worthy of a discussion amongst hound hunters and also assumed the HTDA would be the first ones to bring the discussion to the table.
Then aparently I made the mistake of also assumeing that since no mention of it had ever been brought up, that in order to get the running season lengthened a deal was made with the trappers to get both thru at the same time. I guess thats what I get for assumeing.

You know the problem with these boards is this: If we were looking at each other and having a conversation I don't think you would have taken any offense to what I said.

I am spending s much time on this keyboard with the NRC, NRAC, ISR, DNR, IRS, CIA, UKC and wishing I would just get abducted by a UFO that I try to make it pretty short and sweet.

If your looking to pick a fight with a game warden well, there are plenty out there for that, I prefer to work for coonhunters instead of fight with them.

By the way was that a legal trap or an illegal conibear?

Im not looking for a fight with anyone. I apreciate your fighting for us, but that dont mean I always have to agree with you.
I just believe I have a right to voice my opinion.

The trap I got a dog killed in was an illegal set 280, but can provide you with the names of several owners who lost hounds to legal 220s.

I hate 220s on dry ground too. Illegal snares are just as bad.

Sorry to hear about your dog.

Believe me, there was no intention to hide anything. The DNR put that in the rules. I have to say though that with it in there it is a lot easier to get a wider base of support for this proposal.

I really don't know that much about trapping in northern Indiana but down south trappers don't start hitting it hard until December anyway. I never had a problem. You are the first that I have heard of that has.
