Your Dog Is Gonna Die Tonight

Please people, go take care of your hounds. It is cold out there. As I write this there are two "RIP" threads on the front page. There have been about 4 others over the last two or three days. I know some of these dogs are old, and some would have died this week even with the best care, but haven't people noticed a pattern. How many dogs have to die "mysteriously" on a cold night before people get that they are dieing of hypothermia?
The news today told of several people in the south dying of hypothermia. One guy was in his house wrapped up in a blanket. BUt frozen solid. DO NOT LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOUR HOUND. Go give them some more straw. Give them some warm food. Some warm water- not hot- just warm. And if your doghouse isn't top quality, bring the dogs in for the night. At least put two to a side in your insulated truck box. You have already put long hours into training them. They have hunted hard and tirelessly for you. Now get off your butt, traipse out there and give them some more help in handling this cold.

Please.

For the love of dog.

This weather isn't fit for man or beast, That's why I'm on the couch and my 5 hunting buddies are scattered through the house.
That's the least I can do for the ones that bring me so much enjoyment.

A good dog house, lots of dry bedding, fed & water everyones dogs will be fine. Northern dogs go threw this cold weather everyone year.
On another note I don't think ours are gonna die tonight from the cold, as its only about 32 F out there now

this weather will be a big shock for them southern dogs. up here we get stretches where the thermometer won't get above zero for weeks at a time..gets pretty hard on a old dogs ticker trying to produce body heat..if your dog won't come out of there dog house at feeding time..then its time to get them some where warm..if a dog stays in there dog house and barks, its time to get them in some where warm..good luck to everyone.

Truly,
My old dog did die tonight just shy of 10 year of age. He has had Lyme disease for the last 3 years now which was hard on him, but one thing he did have was a warm, dry dog house to sleep in. He got warm water everyday as much as he wanted.
I did give my dog the best of care and medical attention, but when their time is up, it's up, not much you can do about it. He's aged so much this last year, had trouble with his hips. Not a lot you can do.

Good post Ben im shure surprised how my pups are handling this cold weather but then again they have dog houses with 2 inch insulation and plenty of straw. Ive noticed lots of people around here with dogs tied out with no shelter nor bedding just farm dogs prety much who knows how many dogs and other animals actually die from this cold weather we have been haveing.

Straw is better bedding than hay! Straw is hollow & traps warmth. Hay compacts & your dog can still freeze! JMO

my DanII dog died when he was 8 yrs old..it was jan. but not real cold..i was cleaning the dairy barn that morning and drove past him with the tractor and manure spreader. he was at the end of the chain barking at the tractor like every other time..when i got done spreading and drove back by him, he was laying at the end of his chain dead..he was still warm..don't know what he died of, but the vet was guessing he had an anerism..

Folks,

I know you think you are doing you dogs a favor bringing them inside, but I don't believe you are.

Keeping them inside at close to seventy degrees and then throwin back out to even a 30 degree night is a bigger shock to their system then the dog that is out in this weather all of the time.

Dogs get old and die, it's what happens. Hot weather is harder on them then this stuff.

It was -5 here this morning and the only older dog i had was still in her box when I fed. I reached in and gave her a pat and it was nice in toasty in her box.

Good bedding, lots of good feed and fresh water.

I have seen people's good intentions kill more dogs then the elements.

just my humble opinion

I think that more die from kidney failure than some may find it to be. That givin them water twice a day thing ain't enough when it's freezin as fast as your pourin it. We soak all our food till it's completely mush & make sure the mush is suspended in warm water when it's fed. You can carry all the water you want but they are not gonna drink it cuz your forcin it into them via their food.

Not sure what is being referred to as cold but as Dan Dog's said, cold can last for an awful long time in this country & winter kill is pretty rare.

Of course since we have said cold weather also mean's that our doggy condo's are made of 2 x 4 stud wall's & insulated the same as your house complete with the roof & a hunk of carpet over the door.

Like Truly said, please take care of them. You are the one responsable & considered their lifeline, you owe it to them.................

Tucker is three months shy of 14. Sleeping comfy cozy in the 70 degree house. If your dog house is good thats fine, I just know a lot of guys don't have as good of houses as they need for a prolonged stretch of cold. A good tough dog can handle a few cold nights- but we are in a loooong stretch- they seem they most dangerous.
Dan dogs- amazing how often we hear the story of the dog outside barking at us on a cold morning and then later it is dead. Like it was trying to tell us something..............

Stay warm y'all

Yeah, we haven't seen 32 in two weeks. it's been a tough one.

I can certainly see bringin a 14 year old dog in. They are not gonna be huntin and in all honesty are not gonna live much longer anyway. it is good for them to be comfortable.

I think the guys point was to not bring them in at night THEN throw them back out side in the morning. That is what he said was hard on them and I would agree with that.
I have 3 in the house but the only time they go out side is when they tell me they want to. They get back in the house the same way.

well seeing that you are from augusta KS where the record low was -12 on Jan 3, 1919...

You can come up here when it is 30 below and sleep in an igloo all night we will give you plenty of straw and water and food and pack the sides with 5 feet of snow

then we will thaw you out and sit by the fire for awhile and then go out for 5 minutes

I can tell you right now what situation you would rather be in

And THAT is just my humble opinion
