No, Michele Obama does not get paid to serve as the First Lady and she doesn't perform any official duties. But this hasn't deterred her from hiring an unprecedented number of staffers to cater to her every whim and to satisfy her every request in the midst of the Great Recession. Just think, Mary Lincoln was taken to task for purchasing china for the White House during the Civil War. And Mamie Eisenhower had to shell out the salary for her personal secretary from her husband's salary.

no matter how you view it, paying out over a million dollars per year for a staff of an un-elected coatailer? we as americans should have a house cleaning, and there is no better place to start than at the white one. god willing, Jan. 26, 2010 will be the beginning of the obama's exit from our white house. once he leaves, he can go bow before a muslum king somewhere if he wishes. Judge Carter has some real American Blood running in his veins, and we should support his move to allow this birth place hearing. Now, if we could only control the 100's of millions of democrat dollars that will be spent to try and defend an illegal.. but wait....thats their way....

i dont know how they exspectthe avarge family to survie they really dont care i think the gov staff should take a pay cut start worring about how thier own people is going to survie and quit worring about other countrys i know this country was getting in bad shape when they changed presidentsso cant blame it all on obma but i dont see where he is doing much if anything to get this country back on its feet i work in the coal industy i been laid off went back worked 3 days laid right back off i figure its the same for miners in kentucky just my opion

don'y really care what snopes has to say i see titles that include assistance to the first lady all being paid the big bucks while the average workingman struggles to feed his family, just like the big corporations assistants for the assistants.

i can't say how many assistants or staffers first ladies need. in any event 22 certainly seems like way too many. i wish we could have an accounting of what each one does and how each is justified, not just in these hard times but ever. being flush with money does not make wasting tax payer dollars right. in the bushs' had 22, the obamas' should have fewer because of the unpresidented dept we're piling up.

what is disgusting is that so many citizens think their "need" justifies the expropriation(the genteel word for theft) of other citizens personal property. and not just "disgusting", but a dang ineffective way to perpetuate a "free" society. some of us already know, some are learning, some will learn when it's to late.

While the white house is spending that much money on people to follow the First Lady around the President is shipping all the brass possible over seas to jack up the price of ammo. So you can see both of these people are just as bad.
The First Lady by wasting tax payers’ money and the other by affecting Americans’ rights to bare arms.
